AIBU?

To be horrified by the volume of choking reports about Sophie the Giraffe?

A friend just posted the following:

AIBU to wonder why the hell it is still being sold? There are countless similar stories all over the net. Does a child have to die before anyone will take action?

There will have been plenty of times where I will have left the room to do x or y. I probably left her with stuff I hadn't considered dangerous. I would like to think that had something scary happened I would blame myself rather than the item and try to prevent anyone else owning one

btw- that blog post is fiction. The deliberate use of "of" instead of "have" is inconsistent with the writing style of the rest of it, so I wouldn't put too much by it.

Youre horrified at the volume of choking reports? a volume of ONE?

If you have a problem with a toy report it properly. If a certain report similar, it will be fully investigated and if complaints are founded it will be recalled. All you are doing is running around the internet shreiking "Wont anyone think of the children?!" Cop on.

Wow OP, pretty judgy posting there 'oh so it's ok if it's not your child' - no, it's ok if you supervise your child while they are chewing on a plastic giraffe.

Not quite sure where you are coming from suggesting that posters are unconcerned if someone else's baby chokes and dies.

Ds2 was gagging on a chip the other day. Should I wage a campaign against McCains? Or maybe just keep an eye on him Hmm

I can't be live so many people are saying don't leave a child unattended, can any of you honestly say you have never left your child with a toy for 5mins while your doing washing, cooking ect. I find that hard to believe. It's not possible to watch them 24/7.

Does that blog have any other posts either?

Anyway, we all make our own judgement calls. Someone once told me I would need bars on the windows as my dd likes to stand on the windowsill.

I hope you're taking all toys away, as they carry the same exact choking risk.

Sorry to burst your bubble and cast doubt on your impressive detective work, but she's a real person - scoff away though, limp blue babies are always good for a laugh I suppose....

yeah, yeah, whatever.

I have to say that whenever one of my children has a near death experience, the first thing I do is go on the computer and start a blog about it. Just the one post though....

No, you're clearly much too superior I suppose. You can have a Biscuit too, for a special treat. Might even brighten up your life!

Youre not answering about the horrifying volume of one complaint......where is the rest OP?

Tbh if I had a parenting fail like that I wouldn't be rushing to tell the world, but you know, we all different.

So, it's been on sale for over 50 years, there are "countless anecdotes" of children choking and yet it's still on sale...?

There are dozens, however I'm not sure they'll make any difference to some of you.

My Sophie is destined for an ugly demise after reading some of them, as I'm not as vigilant a mother as some of you, obviously, and don't want to put anything in my baby's hands that could feasibly stop her breathing quite so quickly and easily. My DSis's child had a very near miss with another toy years ago and we could have lost her very easily if we hadn't noticed and reacted quickly. I do think some of these toys should carry specific warnings to parents, and this is one of them.

But none of those stories you've just linked to are about choking, and in fact most of them conclude that Sophie is perfectly safe. Hardly "countless" is it?

Report
sheswallowedafly · 09/07/2015 15:40

It's not safe when it's marketed at parents for use by teething babies, and a child stops breathing and goes blue after putting it in her mouth .

There are dozens

Nope, that's a link to a google search results page for 'Sophie the giraffe recall', many of which, as Diryan has pointed out, conclude that the item is safe. It's not evidence of dozens of cases of choking.

Report
SoupDragon · 09/07/2015 15:42

I can't see anything relevant on that Google search [despairs]

Report
Laquila · 09/07/2015 15:43

OP, most of those links contradict your posts. It sounds as though the only recall there's ever been was in relation to a small number of units sold in Germany (I think?)

In fact one of those links seems to be devoted to debunking the rumour that Sophie is a choking hazard, or has been recalled. It's quite an interesting read.
