To wonder if society has lost the art of discretion and subtlety

Everything seems to be so in your face these days and woe betide anyone for saying they're uncomfortable with something. Be it public displays of affection, breastfeeding in public, days out, general Conversation. It all seems to have to be out there and shouted about.

Is it selfishness, social media, a self awareness thing? I don't get it. All I know is no one seems to be subtle with anything any more.

God I think people are too subtle, especially in how they speak in business. Lots of jargon and beating around the bush.

As for breast feeding, public displays of affection etc......ridiculous that there were ever hidden in the first place

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 04/07/2015 20:39

You say subtlety and discretion, I say you're just trying to hide things away that you are uncomfortable with.
BF'ing in public? Alternative is that women hide away at home, just for your comfort. That has nothing to do with subtletly or discretion.

You may have an actual point but your examples are extremely poor.

Outwith · 04/07/2015 20:39

Grin 1/10. And lay off BFing.

Oh you'll love me then. It was hot today so I was out on my knickers on the balcony. Overlooked by approximately 120 neighbours and two bus routes.

No subtlety happening here.

And I breastfed everywhere.

Saying that, that Nicki Minaj could do with a big ole dose of subtlety. Mine can all hang out but she needs to put hers well away Hmm

AccordingToOurRecords · 04/07/2015 20:47

YANBU, I agree OP. As for breast feeding, it is possible to feed without anyone seeing your Girls. Why would you want to show your boobs to strangers anyway. Before I get flamed, yes I've breast fed 3 babies, whenever and wherever they needed feeding and I managed it Without flashing anything.

ImNotTheLadies · 04/07/2015 20:51

'breastfeeding'

Hmm
Pumpkinpositive · 04/07/2015 20:54

Well, ChuffinAda, I must say this thread is a timely and pleasant departure from all the "why can't people say what they really mean???" epic sagas we've been treated to over the past week.

Your Girls?

I think they were called breasts last time I looked. Or TITS if you prefer...

HaleMary · 04/07/2015 20:54

How exactly does one breastfeed 'subtly'? Do you sort of hint at it in oblique, coded metaphors, or bf in the usual way but while conversing indirectly about nouvelle vague cinema? Or while wearing toning, un-obvious shades of mouse, taupe and mushroom?

ChuffinAda · 04/07/2015 20:56

I actually have no issue with breastfeeding in public but know not everyone is comfortable with it hence sticking it on the list.

Everything that can be done in public can be done discretely. I just don't understand why people choose not to do things discretely and need an audience or someone to give them a round of applause or Facebook likes for it.

ChuffinAda · 04/07/2015 20:56

Pumpkin I too don't do subtle Grin

HaleMary · 04/07/2015 20:58

'Discretely' doesn't mean what you think it means, OP.

downgraded · 04/07/2015 20:58

You know I kind of agree with you. You have the nub of a good idea there. But you have furnished it with examples which I can't get on board with.

In which case YAstillBU.

eggyface · 04/07/2015 20:59

everything can be done discretely as long as you don't muddle it up with something else. Grin

Public breastfeeding seems to have been far more acceptable in the past.

downgraded · 04/07/2015 20:59

Yea that's weird isn't it? Discretely and discreetly mean the opposite of each other.

Fucking English language Angry

ChuffinAda · 04/07/2015 21:00

Ah fuck off. I'm allowed the odd typo Grin

Agree with this

Downgraded, you call them what you like but tits is so vulgar.
