AIBU?

to be amazed at what people try to sell stuff for!

I never fail to be amazed at the value people put on their old junk. I've seen second hand boots, bought for £60, selling for £55 plus money for petrol/delivery. BARGAIN! I had a friend who tried to sell her knackered £100 Juicy Couture bag for £85. I tried to explain that a 15% saving isn't an awful lot considering she'd been using is for years, to no avail.

I wonder if anyone is actually buying this second hand stuff to save a couple of pounds, especially as its often impossible to tell the condition until you pick it up. I'd much rather have a scout through the sales, you'd probably find better discounts!

(That being said, I'm a massive fan of buying second hand, and it was a godsend when I needed to furnish my flat on the cheap)

Ours has a used baby bath thermometer if anyone wants it. They've helpfully included in the post that it's three whole pounds cheaper than the new John Lewis price. Buyer spends their afternoon collecting from middle of nowhere.

I have seen people try to sell tins of baby formula with some used for 80% retail price. Firstly, who would buy baby formula from a stranger? (unlikely but they might be a psycho so you wouldnt risk it) and even if you were prepared to overlook that, a 20% discount aint really worth it. I also saw someone selling a box of tampax with two taken out for 75% retail price (buyer collects). Arf.

That said, I totally dont care if people I have given stuff for free flip it. At least they tend to actually turn up with a van which said item wil fit in at the time arranged.

YABU, selling stuff is the best education we can can get. Only if we pay attention though.

This discussion reminds me of an adage I learnt as a child:
'Fools and their money are soon parted' and something I studied at Uni 'Market Forces'. 'nuff said?

Oh the sort of things I have seen in my local FB groups, just saw someone trying to sell a pram they got for free on another site for £40. How stupid and disgusting

I have given away some free stuff but every time it's such a hassle, can't come, will come, can you deliver endless faffing. Not worth the hassle

Had to laugh flicking through eBay last night and came across a set of knackered old wooden ladders (about ten foot so not the stepladder type).
Seller had painted them white and called them shabby chic. Wtf are you supposed to do with ten foot knackered white ladders?
Bargain at £30 apparently...

leedsbay.com Seriously, check out the blog. It is beyond description.

A cheap second hand shop getting donations for a shop where 50% goes to a Bulgarian charity. They do have a book entitled 'How to Tell a Naked Man What to Do' www.leedsbay.com/how-to-tell-a-naked-man-what-to-do-sex-advice-from-a-woman-who-knows--isbn-9780749925895-24379-p.asp

If anyone remembers the kerfuffle at Clearances at Forge Lane it is the same people. www.facebook.com/LeedsAuctionClearances.

It's scary when people make their own dummy clips and try to sell them.
With the letters on the beads so you can make your babies name.
The ribbon is so long and they're not tested to the correct standard they're supposed to be. In fact I doubt they're tested at all. All full of little crystals and things! Eek.

People try and sell buggies as well that are in awful condition! 'The straps are missing and the break doesn't work but apart from that it's in great condition'. It's just unsafe, the worse part is, people actually buy these things! Hmm

Hehe, just this morning I saw someone on my Facebook (a cousin), selling a bag of 3-4 year old knickers. Put next to the caption was 'Will wash and iron on request'.

A friend moved into a new house they were renovating. The old kitchen was revolting, but had an old belfast/butler sink. Buyer removes and packs.

He sold the whole kitchen on eBay, with a big close up of the sink. Refused all offers for 'just the sink' and got £50 for the whole kitchen. A guy turned up with his mate and ripped his whole kitchen out and paid him for the privilege!

There's a (very pretty, in fairness) toddler's dress for sale on Ebay at the moment... for £120. Used. On the grounds that it was £140 when it was new.

I'm sure it was. I'm also sure I could visit the originating boutique at this time of year and buy it, or something very similar to it, for £70. But I don't want to spend £70 on a toddler's dress, even in the sales, so I look on Ebay.

It's been relisted a couple of times now (I get alerts for certain brand names, because I am looking for an outfit for a wedding for her) and I always wonder if this person has ever actually used Ebay before, or seen the prices things really sell at.

ive sold things for crazy prices on ebay in the past but now its not worth it. last time I had several 'didn't turn up' and nit picking. so now don't bother.

However Facebook is a nightmare. some people sell their tat for unbelievable prices yet I couldn't shift nice things really cheap. and to top it off I had messages asking to donate items as they are trying to raise money for charity.

I actually benefited once from ridiculous eBay overbidding. Had a wooden playhouse, £99 from Homebase. Was painted with garden paint, but needed new roofing felt and a couple of the boards needed replacing/patching up. Council wanted £30 to take it away, would have taken forever to cut it small enough to put in the car to take to dump, I didn't know anyone who wanted it, so I put it on eBay in the hope someone would take it off our hands. 99p start price, collection only. Included pics of the damaged bits. Other than the person asking how much to post it to Cornwall Hmm, a few bids came in so we thought we'd get £20-£30 for it - fab. On the last day, bidding frenzy pushed it up to £175!!! You could have bought a new one and the paint and still had change for that! Was seriously expecting the buyer to say no thanks when they turned up, but they loaded into the van and handed over the cash! I didn't dare spend it for a month just in case they tried to get out of the contract somehow! Grin

I too would like to make £££ flogging my old footwear and hosiery to pervs on Ebay. Does anyone know if there's the same market for tights? What about ordinary socks, just the sort you buy from Primark or BHS that have seen better days?

Shock I have defiantly missed a trick with the old socks! If somebody wanted to buy my smelly running socks for £7 I would be more than happy to facilitate

There are loads of people buying stuff in Home Bargains and B&M and selling them on ebay with big mark ups. Look at this one here:

£26.95 on ebay

£12.99 in B&M

It's so horrible to see how greedy people are. I mean, come on!

Don't get me started on the Anne Sloane brigade! I had my living and bedroom decorated like that years ago. I bought actual tat for £2-20 in charity shops and refurbished them but now I hate it all.. it's everywhere. They take beautiful Victorian sideboards and turn them into nasty, cheap look at me pieces!

Not proud of this but I had a look through eBay there and the ones with the highest asking prices/bids are the cute little anime type socks, knee socks and tan tights.. but you have to have a pic of your foot with it on and say they are very worn (if there was a barf emoji, it would be here!)

I mean what the fuck is it even? It's shagged, and you can get a new one for less.

I've just been amused by a post on my local selling page - a woman is trying to sell a job lot of 16 pairs of flipflops for £15. Each pair is clearly marked at £1. Someone "LOL"ed and she got narky, because you're getting a pair for free, aren't you?

I saw some Hickstead tickets on Gumtree last week, £20. They'd included a photo and it was one of the coupons that they put in the Friday-ad every year, free entry for two people!

I love reading the comments on selling posts, esp the ones where cheeky fuckers people offer well below the sellers reasonable price! Like when I posted my old iPad 2 in near perfect condition for £120 and someone offered me £40...

It's still for sale btw if anyone is interested Grin
