to be amazed at what people try to sell stuff for!

I never fail to be amazed at the value people put on their old junk. I've seen second hand boots, bought for £60, selling for £55 plus money for petrol/delivery. BARGAIN! I had a friend who tried to sell her knackered £100 Juicy Couture bag for £85. I tried to explain that a 15% saving isn't an awful lot considering she'd been using is for years, to no avail.

I wonder if anyone is actually buying this second hand stuff to save a couple of pounds, especially as its often impossible to tell the condition until you pick it up. I'd much rather have a scout through the sales, you'd probably find better discounts!

(That being said, I'm a massive fan of buying second hand, and it was a godsend when I needed to furnish my flat on the cheap)

shoofly I suspect the converse were bought by a foot fetishist given the high price and good feedback. Old shoes can be a goldmine if you can stomach the messages from foot-pervs!

shoofly · 30/06/2015 17:27

Stiffstink ewww.... still- knackered converse from your seven year old daughter? Yuck as my mum always said 'a fool and his money are easily parted!'

Dinnerfor1 · 30/06/2015 17:31

I saw someone trying to sell a paddling pool the other day. They said it was hardly used, that they paid £10 and that's what they wanted for it. Collection only. Why would anyone pay full price for a second hand item, even if it has hardly been used?!

ollieplimsoles · 30/06/2015 17:38

Oh now this is my kind of thread! Grin

I'm on gumtree everyday looking for bargains, just bought a vintage 1969 teak and tile coffee table for £40- in pristine condish! Also bagged a table and four chairs for £200 like brand new, when they are in harveys for £1000!

Some of the stuff you see on there though is amazing... One listing was this battered old chair from Ikea, massive holes in the back, on for £100, me and dh pissed ourselves at it. When there are lovely chairs on there going for £25- £50.. I could talk about this all day!

Totally agree about horse sakes on Facebook -there are some genuinely bonkers adverts and replies. One lady was advertising a young, promising show jumper, 16.2hh, really nice. Had some decent results. £8,000. Lady comes on offering £1,200 because she would offer a "good home" and really liked the horse Hmm. Quite a lot of coloured cobs and young Welsh A 's for thousands. I do love a good old laugh at the ads though!

mrsallergy · 30/06/2015 20:02

It's amazing what crap people will buy though. I volunteered at a village fete type affair, the stall next to me was a 'white elephant' stall - full of stuff donated by the villagers that really was fit for the tip - dusty table lamps with no lamp shade sort of thing. That stall was heaving all afternoon.

Callofthewild · 30/06/2015 21:51

My favourite are the ones where people are selling new items eg a top or dress that apparently they've left too long to return or can't be bothered to return and 'just want what I paid for it.' If I'm going to pay full price for something I'll buy it from the actual shop and get a receipt thanks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/06/2015 22:28

Shoo, there's a reason those shoes went for so much.

steppedonlego · 30/06/2015 22:28

There's always someone selling gift vouchers on one of mine. Ads always go "£50 voucher for next. Want £50" Hmm

Then someone will point out why should they take the risk of buying what could be a card nicked from the shop when they're could just go to the shop and spend their £50

Then the seller gets huffy and says "alright then, £45"

geekymommy · 30/06/2015 22:41

People who are delusional about the value of their old stuff are so much fun. Try living with one and trying to declutter- they won't let you get rid of stuff unless you can get what they think is a reasonable price for it. Which is never going to happen.

Jewels234 · 30/06/2015 22:51

I am a consistent undervaluer and end up getting calls at 2/3/4am about random things that I'm selling. Who in their right mind thinks that's acceptable?!

cleanmyhouse · 30/06/2015 22:56

Battered beyond belief converse..? For more than the price of a new pair?
Hmm

TheCraicDealer · 30/06/2015 23:24

My personal favourites are the screenshots of furniture from the Argos app or what is really obviously an ikea unit (like those cube-style storage things) and "Any1 sellin anyfing like dis?". And you just think, "Yes. Argos."

Also like the ones where they go, "Dress got today, don't want it as too small tags still on. Paid 75 just want my money back". And you just think "well fucking take it back then!" But then you realised they probably robbed it. Those buy and sell sites are cat nip for shoplifters.

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/06/2015 23:42

I've been looking for a sofa on Gumtree, and the prices people ask are just astounding. Worn, faded, cushions have no life in them, and they still want over £200 for the sofa!

ihavenonameonhere · 01/07/2015 00:14

I was about to say sofas. Thanks to interest free credit most ppl can get em cheap but ppl want daft prices for them 2nd hand.

Oh I also hate open to reasonable offers then when someone offers an amount they get offended!!

ToysRLuv · 01/07/2015 04:45

Geek: I so get you. Old books about railways? Must be worth looking into, photograhing and listing on line in the mythical week in the future when you will have nothing else to do. Similarly, paper weights, battered 70s toys, old videos, casettes and lps..

Want2bSupermum · 01/07/2015 05:01

This drives me nuts. We have been looking for a sofa bed that is $3600 new so obviously we want to go with something 2nd hand as we have kids. On Craigslist (our gumtree here in the UK) I find one and the guy wants $3300 because they state they are $6600 new. I send them a copy of the spec sheet I have with the price on telling them that unless theirs is leather and king sized with the super premium mattress the price for their new sofa is $3600 therefore I am willing to pay $1000 as I have to pay an additional $300 to get it moved.

They turned down my offer of course! I'll pay full price and get what I want.

whothehellknows · 01/07/2015 06:52

Yep, battered shoes-- they have a notorious niche market. I try not to think too much about it.

Cockbollocks · 01/07/2015 07:09

I'm amazed by the current trend for buying knackered old furniture, painting it white then selling it as vintage for massively over inflated prices. Hmm

ReputableBiscuit · 01/07/2015 07:11

There's a woman on our local site. 'Paid 3000 from DFS for this corner sofa last year so I want 2500 for it.' Nobody is biting so she keeps bumping it. The temptation to post 'you were a complete mug to pay that for a sofa that probably cost DFS £175 to make; nobody on God's green earth will give you £2500 for a second hand flippin sofa'.

ReputableBiscuit · 01/07/2015 07:12

Oh yes to the repainted with chalk paint so it looks pale green and dusty furniture.

WiIdfire · 01/07/2015 07:22

And yet sometimes you get an absolute bargain. Second hand silver cross stroller, one broken strut on the sunshade otherwise fine, £5. Done amazing service for another 18 months!

But I do enjoy reading through the facebook selling pages for all the reasons above.

(Goes to see if she can find any manky shoes to sell to make some money)

MamaLazarou · 01/07/2015 07:52

Someone on my local FB selling group was trying to flog their kids' used dummies the other day.

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/07/2015 08:09

Oh yes, Cockbollocks - Shabby Shit.

Crappy old chest of drawers painted badly with Farrow and Ball or Annie Sloane paint and charge £300 for it...

mandy214 · 01/07/2015 12:20

Greedy people?!

I sold my pushchair which I'd only used for Number 3, for maybe 6 months, and even then didn't really use the pushchair part as I could just click the car seat on the bottom part. The only issue was that one clip on the side of the hood had broken.

But it wasn't a trendy pram or particularly expensive (paid about £300 - and I know it doesn't matter what I paid for it, I just wanted rid of it).

Anyway, put it on Ebay and it sold for 99p!!!

When the buyer came to collect, she gave me a £1 coin and then stood there waiting whilst my H loaded it into her car boot and then said "have you got the penny change?" Shock
