about pale skin?

I'm down south, so it's going to be baking today. I'm not wearing tights, which is perfectly acceptable in our office.

Now I'm as pale as they come, especially my legs. I just don't tan at all.

I have had TWO comments already today from people - "blimey, you're brave, getting your legs out when they are so white!" Both from colleagues who were wearing dresses with no tights themselves, so it wasn't even a subtle dig at that. One then started a conversation about whether or not I'd considered fake tan.

Why is pale skin seen as so bad? Why shouldn't pale people wear skirts and dresses the same? Why should we go through all the faff and cost of fake tanning?

First world problem, I know, but it's really irritated me not already grumpy with the heat and crappy air conditioning

We went to a bbq today and two of the women there commented on my DS1 who is 9, asking if he was always this pale, and one actually called him Casper. A grown woman calling a young boy a stupid name because of the colour of his skin? I know it's slightly BU but I told her that she was behaving entirely out of order and should keep her thoughts to herself next time she felt compelled to insult a small boy.

I don't think I'll be welcome at the next bbq.

Snapes You were right to call them out, horrible women! FlowersWine

oabiti · 05/07/2015 21:36

I am black & I have a lot of 'pale' people commenting to me about how pale their arms/legs are. I tell them that I have never noticed, which I haven't. It's not an 'other' to have pale skin so it's pretty unremarkable.

At the end of the day, skin holds all of our organs together. I am thankful of that.

oabiti · 05/07/2015 21:40

snapes, why do people have to be so mean and personal? Sad

SnapesCapes · 05/07/2015 21:46

No idea! She had never met him before, watched me put suncream on him and announced (directly to him) "oooh, aren't you pale?" I couldn't decide if she was simply filling an empty space or genuinely wanted to begin a conversation about suntans. Utter madness.

oabiti · 05/07/2015 21:49

I think she was being insensitive.

oabiti · 05/07/2015 21:53

I must admit, I do have a fondness for freckles. And remember drawing black dots on my cheeks, with a marker pen, to try and emulate them. I think I ended up looking more like Seal Smile

BlossomTang · 05/07/2015 21:56

Sun tan/fake tan madnessSmile Who gets to decide the rules here?!

That people blurt out their opinions about others skin colour is beyond the pale (sorry couldn't resist), are they the type that inform fat people that are indeed fat or short people short etc...

mrsdavidbowie · 05/07/2015 21:58

I have just tried the Clarins drops that you add to your own body lotion. And I have to say I look vaguely sunkissed. For the first time ever.

MadeMan · 05/07/2015 22:28

"Do you find the colour a problem with staining clothes/fabric?"

If you mean the initial colour of the sun cream spray bushy, then no I've not had any problems with it staining clothes so far. It only sprays on pale green until you start rubbing it in, but it means you can see where you've put it on your body. Probably best to try not getting it directly on clothes though, because at the very least it might leave greasy marks. It's great for topping yourself up quickly throughout the day. Smile

Snapes I don't think you're being unreasonable for calling the women out on her idiotic comments to your son.

oabiti I quite like freckles too and am surprised how many people seem to dislike them on themselves. Another reason I don't like fake tan because it hides freckles and blemishes which can usually be attractive.

crustsaway · 05/07/2015 22:54

A tan looks great on the young.

A tan looks leathery on the old.

why on earth would being black come into it?

Nowadays Im white, pale and interesting Grin

oabiti · 05/07/2015 23:25

Exactly, crusts

greatbigbushybeard · 08/07/2015 23:32

mrsdavidbowie just looked up the Clarins drops- look v interesting as I never tend to bother with ft on my face, just put on a bit of 'warmth' or tinted moisturiser. Do you put yours on face or body or both?

How rude re the bbq ladies & your son- people say shit sometimes!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 09/07/2015 00:23

I actually really like the way I look.

I bet you also have red ginger hair & either pale grey or emerald green eyes aswell.?
