To think they could have given us more notice (neighbours party)

My neighbours have a party every yr around this time for a birthday. We normally arrange to be away for the night as we have 2 small children.

I asked them a couple of weeks ago if they were having their party and were told they weren't having one this yr.

They've just come out to tell me they are having a party this evening. Sod all I can do about it now but I'm cross that I am now in for a sleepless night. I know it's once a yr but I've been poorly this week and hardly had any sleep so could have done with a sleep tonight.

AIBU to think they could have given me a little more notice, at least more then 2 hrs.

Perhaps it was a spur of the moment thing, with the weather being so nice. They don't have to tell you they're having a party at all so yes, YABU.

Do they know you normally go away just because of the party?

Yep they normally know we go away that's why I asked.

It normally goes I until about 3am just not looking forward to it.
I know IABU I was just hoping for a nice nights sleep. Never mind.

I think what time the party goes to is what is important. Do they switch the music off at an appropriate time? If they do, then once a year is really not that big of a deal. If the party is a standard 6pm-midnight affair on a Saturday night, then I think you are overreacting.

If their party goes beyond the acceptable noise regulations in your area (11pm Sunday-Thursday, 12am Friday-Saturday at my place) then you can follow the appropriate channels for complaint about noise.

Oh ok, only it's quite unusual to go away because of a once a year party. Still I suppose if you're able to then why not.

Either way, I hope it's not too big of a problem for you all and you manage to sleep.

The reason we go away is because it gets rather noisy, the kids wake and I'm not the best sleeper (wake for any noise ). We all feel the after effects for a few days so just rather avoid it.

However it's an excuse to have a bottle of wine, as you know it helps me sleep GrinGrin

As far as I am concerned, no party should go on until 3 am, I don't care if it is the only time someone ever does it in their entire lives. It is unnecessary, antisocial and shows a fundamental lack of respect for other people. So, no, YANBU for hating/dreading this party but YABU to expect notice for said party.
I would make my feelings known concerning the early hours noise

Really, one night per year is not that big of a deal. I think that you might be overreacting a bit. Yes, it is really annoying and you sit there grumbling, but if you are only disturbed one night per year (although I would expect the music off by midnight) then that is actually pretty good.

I wouldn't worry about a party once a year. It's lovely weather so I think it's perfectly acceptable to have an impromptu party, even if it does go on till 3am. I'd go out and get earplugs, you have been given sufficient warning to do that. So on that basis YABU.

Agree with the earplugs. The twice weekly bin men were doing my head in at 6am. Problem solved for a couple of quid.

Yanbu. Antisocial nightmare, and it's worse when you're poorly and less able to mentally cope with it. I feel for you - earplugs don't ever help with thudding bass music either! :-( On the plus side, at least you know it probably won't go on every single night, unlike in a terrible flat we used to live in (which I admit has perhaps unfairly influenced my feelings about any late night house parties forever!) Are you sure it's too late to arrange to go to a hotel for the night if you'd already planned the expense of that anyway? Could be quite an adventure for the kids!

Can't do the travel lodge as have a dog, we normally stay at ILs so can take the dog.

It's ok I'll live and some wine would be nice, just being grumpy and don't need to be it makes it worse.

We are just off to the funfair with the DC so will eat out and get back slightly later, wine and ear plugs I may sleep ok.

Don't neighbours invite their neighbours to come and have a drink at the party any more? I always used to invite neighbours round, even if we didn't know each other very well. My partying days are long gone along with my youth and vigour

Why didn't you say that you'll need them to quieten things down this year as you have no notice or ability to make other arrangements?
