The shootings in Tunisia and pictures of the dead

I am truly shocked at the news that so many people have been murdered.

I watched the news and am now watching Sky News newspaper preview. Full of pictures of dead bodies (covered or pixelated).

This is just downright disrespectful to the dead and injured. Report the news by all means but we don't need pictures

News is normally (at least a lot of the time) about sensationalism

I agree with you Op. I think standards are slipping as to what is acceptable. I can remember coverage of the IRA atrocities, which was much less graphic in what was allowed to be published or shown on TV.

I avoided the news after seeing online news pictures with blurred dead bodies. Why on earth do they feel the public needs to see this? Imagine if that body was a loved one?

It may be worth communicating with the press complaints commission.

Last year when that plane got shot down over the Ukraine some of the pictures that appeared both on social media and on the news itself were just beyond horrific. I remember thinking at the time that when 9/11 happened they moved cameras away from the twin towers so viewers couldn't see people jumping out of buildings, yet just over a decade later they were showing actual close ups of the bodies of plane crash victims, some of whom would have been identifiable to loved ones.

I agree. It is unnecessary.

I know I can turn it off but I want to see what the rest of the news as well. We can imagine what the scene looks like - no need to show it

I saw an un pixilated one on telegraph online, can't get it out my mind I didn't realise what I was looking at until too late, it's now been pixilated out but I can't stop seeing it in my head, so sad tonight

The Daily Fail have pixelated a towel in at least one photo, making it look like a head, obviously hoping for shock tactics. They are vile human beings who will do anything for media comments.

Those are victims of a horrendous crime and their family members are likely to see. But of course the £'s they make are much more important

This is an interesting one and I thought something similar after MH17 was shot down in Ukraine last year. Reuters particularly came in for a lot of criticism because they showed some fairly graphic pictures of bodies. But some of the other video and photographic reporting at the time, even from the BBC, left a lot to be desired.

There's a fine line between showing pictures which will adequately demonstrate the horror of what's happened and being too graphic or intrusive. The rise and immediacy of internet news and the value of page views IMHO has caused this line to be blurred. Essentially news outlets are having to make much quicker decisions on what to show and showing more graphic images to make a quicker impact because of consumer demand.

I agree distasteful BBC showed woman in bicini on subbed being carried, channel4 had the woman pixeled out at least you still got the action of her being carried not the body. She could have died soon after you don't know, it's so disrespectful especially before families have been told. Imagine seeing this and finding out its a family or friend. There is no need for graphic pic we all know what a body looks like
