AIBU?

To think we should cancel our holiday to Tunisia?

So holiday booked to Sousse with Thomas Cooke. Member of the party include two 84 year olds and a child with autism. Not due to go to the end July but reckon we should just persuade TC to refund or reallocate to different country.

Please don't go to Cornwall. I'm going there in August and it's busy enough without any extra promotion.

Hull is nice. That could use a few tourist bucks.

But feeling absolutely Shock and Sad and Angry for those poor, poor families.

Even Belgium isn't safe. A bus has crashed into a bridge and someone has died:

Cancel.. If you lose the deposit, so what. It's only money. Nothing would get me to go on holiday to N Africa at the moment.

No of course not. I highly doubt you'll get on yabu, but the terrifying point is though we're not safe anywhere. They're just a likely to strike in your own local cafe or pub. I try not to think about it too much of I wouldn't go out the door.
Such a tragedy what has been happening.
It's utterley petrifying. Wish I had the answers, but I don't think any of us do. World leaders included.

That's obviously a tragic accident though Kay not a pre-meditated terrorist attack.

I am amazed that any English person would book a holiday in a mainly muslim country these days anyway Confused

I would cancel because last year they were advising against travel to Tunisia amongst other places. Obviously whoever deemed it was safe was wrong and how could they know anyway.
It just goes to prove the travel companies, their advisors, gov agents etc can only guess with the info they have.

It's not true in any way that's they're as likely to strike in your local cafe, for many reasons.

'They're just a likely to strike in your own local cafe or pub.'

Depending on where you live, no, they're not.

What I mean is. It can happen anywhere.

"I am amazed that any English person would book a holiday in a mainly muslim country these days anyway"

Why? Because all Muslims are terrorists? For God sake. Such ignorance. A terrorist can strike anywhere and at any time. And that terrorism attack is not always driven by Muslims.

I'm surprised any black person can still live in a community where white people live after the massacre last week in Charleston... You know, cause all white people are the same and want to butcher black people.

Hmm

I love to travel and have been away long haul once already this year and have another holiday booked
BUT
I went to Turkey last year and found the Mosque speaker systems utterly horrible and the Islamic attitude to the environment indefensible according to the Koran, plants are not alive and the wanton wildlife destruction despicable.

So I plan my destinations to avoid islamic countries for at least the next few years.

its not a "danger" thing : I lived in central London through the attentions of the IRA, its a "I'll give my money to societies whose values I appreciate"

Nobody is saying all muslims are terrorists. What people are saying is that in a muslim country it will be easier for the terrorists to move around and get close to the areas they are trying to target without raising any suspicion, particularly places like Tunisia and Turkey. Whilst it is certainly the case that you could be the target of terrorists in a cafe in London, this is far less likely than being the target of terrorists whilst in a cafe in Tunis.

I think the raised eyebrow is misplaced.

So there are a fair few people on Facebook now saying that for holidays after 24th July (so say August) people are being asked by TC for £150 per person admin fee plus the extra cost of booking another holiday last minute.

I think that anyone can cause others harm anywhere. There was an attack in Paris on Friday anyway.

I wouldn't holiday in Libya or Syria, but places like Tunisia are generally ok.

As a white non Muslim I feel really sorry for the poor Tunisian business community and their staff, who have had their livelihoods taken from the by a nut job.

Only on MN would you have people saying "it's only money" about thousands of pounds going up in smoke.

TC will be profiting, how else can they justify £150 admin costs PER PERSON to change holidays. Do you think its honestly costing them that much? That's before any extra for the new holiday.

Yeah sorry kids were not going on holiday and we've just bust 4k but its "only money".

I'm amazed that they won't be offering refunds in the UK when their Belgium offices are.

'What I mean is. It can happen anywhere.'

Theoretically, but it's more likely in some places than say, a local pub in the Scottish Highlands or the isle of Sark. C'mon.

Pantone363 · 28/06/2015 17:39

Yes £150 per person admin costs. We travel 6hrs after the July 31st cut off, they want £900 of admin fees to change holidays.

TC? Look how they treated the parents of those two children who died in that deathtrap in Cyprus? They don't give a shit about their customers.

Another reason not to use them.

I would not go near Tunisa if you paid me. Or any other Muslim country. Or Greece.

Pantone - that is shocking! So it's pay that or go to Tunisia or lose all your money?
How can people still maintain that they are not profiting from this

Googlenut - the people staffing the phones working at TC are not working for free. TC is paying them to deal with you. In addition TC is still paying for the reps to work in the resorts which are now going to be empty in Tunisia, and will have some contractual fees to pay to hotels over there which will now be losing their customers. If TC are able to book extra holidays for people relocating them to different countries, then the airstaff and aircraft will need to be relocated too, and additional costs paid to the staff who are negotiating airport bookings and air space. It costs money to change things, hence an admin fee.

TC are not my favourite company but they are a company, not a charity working on your behalf. Its frustrating that you are having to change your holiday, I get that, but at least you are still alive to do it!!

Report
googlenut · 28/06/2015 17:44

Not quite - c'mon you can see below £900 per family! Just in admin fees - then additional cost if holiday is more expensive.
