To apply for a job in these circumstances?

elderflowerlemonade · 26/06/2015 17:41

I have been wondering about getting back to work, and I have seen a couple of positions I could apply for.

I'm pregnant. Pretty massively so!

The jobs are teaching positions so I would be starting in January if I was to be successful.

WIBU to attend an interview resembling a whale ... And should I indicate on the application form I am pregnant? I know it shouldn't really be an issue but I can imagine it might get eyebrows raised if I turn up notably large if they haven't been prepped in advance so to speak.

Thank you. Smile

Just get the application in. Don't mention the pregnancy and if you get an invitation to interview you can consider the next steps at that point.

SouthWestmom · 28/06/2015 16:55

Apply. Don't mention it. It has no relevance whatsoever to your starting in January. Could you get childcare in place for then? Yes? Not their business then.
Don't mention it until the interview and then in the chit chat not talk about how much you are looking forwards getting to work etx.

I am in a panic on my application letter.

I am sure I used to be good at these things!

ILS am I wrong or did you 'say' that in the same tone I use when I tell DD to leave the piano alone Grin

I looked at you in a stern tone of voice, yes. Grin

I'd be happy to. I'm not a teacher, but I do have a lot of experience with CVs and recruitment (professional field)
(Would also need to job description or spec or similar....)

laundryelf · 28/06/2015 17:12

Just get your application in, no need to mention pregnancy. I work in a school and we hired a very pregnant lady then waited for her to start in January. We took on a temp person from September to December.
Only thing I would say is check your OMP is not affected by transferring school during maternity leave. I have experience with previous school not paying OMP as candidate technically left rather than went on maternity leave.
Not sure of the details but the candidate lost a lot of money. She is much happier at her new school and it was a more senior role.
Good luck!

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 17:15

Thank you. I'm not entitled to anything anyway so that's not a concern.

It's more explaining WTF I have been doing for the last four years and how I've kept abreast of changes in the curriculum and so on ... It is hard to do this when the most recent classes I have to reference have now left school.

I feel that to return to work with a very young baby when by the sounds of things you don't need to would put an enormous amount of pressure on your young family.

I am inclined to agree the job is harder rather than easier and I worry that if you were offered the position and subsequently found it difficult to cope it would signify the end to future similar positions.

It sounds as if your husband may be being sensible.

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 18:14

Maybe, I'm not sure.

I've done the form, so should I just send it off?

Go for it. You've done the application. Go for it!! ( positive voice!Smile)

MyNameIsPinkiePie · 28/06/2015 18:35

Send it, once someone has read over it just for typos if not content. Don't mention the pregnancy. I have a back problem and was told not to disclose until an offer had been made, easier to hide my back thankfully but at least get an interview before disclosing. Once at interview communicate the passion for returning to work and the knowledge you have done enough SAHMing. Have you any volunteer or other experience like online courses or helping at playgroups etc? If this would help for further applications then there is plenty of opportunities available, Ive been doing youth/kids volunteering since my eldest was 4 months, just to get out.

I was given advise about giving a personal statement - three sentences, one about who you are with your experience So teacher with x years exp and x achievement. Second about being at home doing x and third about your hopes for a return. Could also be useful for a 'tell us about you' question in interview. Have a look online for mum skills you could include too.

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 18:38

Thank you.

Even getting an interview would mean a lot.

Good luck, OP! You've done exactly the right thing. I'd raise your pregnancy at interview and say baby will be nearly 6 months and you feel from your first this is good time to go back. Also say we have great nursery / childminder we use who is teed up to look after baby too. They are not allowed to ask those questions but you can put their mind at rest about it. Smile

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 18:53

Thank you :)

I turned up for an interview 7 months pregnant 2 weeks ago and got the job. Feels even better that they thought I was the best candidate even over and above people who could start right away. If you're right for the job, they will wait for you. Most employers can play the long game and if they can't, it's their problem.

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 19:46

Congratulations Smile They are advertising for a January start by which time DC will be 5 months.

Good luck elderflower

Chiconbelge · 28/06/2015 20:29

Good advice from pp - apply without mentioning it then if invited for interview email in advance and be as clear with them as you are on this thread: say you are pregnant as will be obvious when you come to the interview, you will be ready in January, this is not a first baby and after four years you are keen to get back to work. That way you've got it out in the open before you walk in.

elderflowerlemonade · 28/06/2015 20:35

Thank you.

I thought if - if - I am invited for interview I could mention it then.

I don't want to come across as precious.

It's already stressing me Hmm have had a bit of an argument with DH about it all.
