would you let your children have a day of school for a day out?

We have just done this. DS has been very sick this year so we've used a lot of leave etc at the hospital. We aren't getting a holiday away because his health may get worse suddenly.
So we pulled the kids out of school and went to a local theme park. It was fab. They aren't doing much anyhow at this stage. We may do it again next year ;)

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 25/06/2015 21:18

Yes. My kid, my decision.

bobajob · 25/06/2015 21:18

Not a myth in my school Grin Not all watching DVDs of course, but once SATS are done, data has been sent off etc there is the summer show, sports days, trips, competition days...

carrie74 · 25/06/2015 21:22

I did last week. BUT my kids have amazing attendance (I think it was 99+% so far this year), my brother and his family were in the UK for the first time in 10 years, and my parents threw a party with other relatives. I never take them out for eg term time holidays. Plus both of mine are in primary school, which bothers me slightly less anyway.

It was a pretty special occasion, and isn't one likely to be repeated for a very long time.

pixiestixie84 · 25/06/2015 21:22

No. I think it sets the right example.

pixiestixie84 · 25/06/2015 21:22

*wrong example, whoops

littleblackno · 25/06/2015 21:23

yes, I have done it a couple of times. I really don't see the issue
my kids are primary age I'm not sure I'd do it in secondary school.

Last year I took them to see the poppys at the tower of London (we live in Devon) and they have had a Friday off a couple of years ago to go to lego land for the weekend.
They had a day off for a very special event to do with their dads job recently (that was authorised the others weren't).

Starlightbright1 · 25/06/2015 21:23

yes

IPlayBass · 25/06/2015 21:26

Primary age at this time of year I definitely would.

MirandaWest · 25/06/2015 21:27

No, I wouldn't.

ghostspirit · 25/06/2015 21:30

i do it once every couple of years. they have good attendance. we are only going to chessington i know summer holidays are almost here. but i got the tickets cheap. plus queing up for so long is a madness so im hoping the ques will be shorter. thats their main summer treat.

RiverTam · 25/06/2015 21:32

No, unless someone was visiting from Australia or similar. If you want things cheap with no queues don't have kids!

TheBossness · 25/06/2015 21:34

Yes I would.

tarkawithaparka · 25/06/2015 21:34

Yes, I would.

Wolfiefan · 25/06/2015 21:35

What River said!

ilovesooty · 25/06/2015 21:35

I don't think it's reasonable for a day out like that, no.

msgrinch · 25/06/2015 21:36

What's the aibu?

cariadlet · 25/06/2015 21:37

A few posters have said that it doesn't matter "at this time of year", but we're still teaching to a normal timetable and will be for the next few weeks - there will be plenty of learning going on.

We have an INSET on the last Wednesday so the Monday and Tuesday will be the children's last days. I can't imagine anything much going on then, and I'd be quite happy for children to have those days off. But any earlier would be just the same as having a day off school at any other time of year.

ghostspirit · 25/06/2015 21:37

river i would still have to wait in the long queues even without kids.

im not sure if it matters how its dressed up weather theres a visitor or not the childs still having a day of school

OP posts:
AnyoneForTennis · 25/06/2015 21:37

You won't have shorter queues! GCSE's finished weeks ago.... The place is FULL of teens!

WorraLiberty · 25/06/2015 21:38

Between now and when the schools break up, Chessington will probably be full of children on school trips.

To answer your question, no I wouldn't.

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 25/06/2015 21:38

No way.

AmysTiara · 25/06/2015 21:38

Yes I would if they were in primary school. Mine like school but if I thought it start them thinking they can swing the lead I'd probably not

thelostboy · 25/06/2015 21:39

Unless there is a very special reason, no.

They are only at school 190 days or so a year. That leaves plenty of days for days out. To pretend you are doing it for the benefit of the kids is usually just denial.

It sets a bad example, and its taking the piss. If fewer people took the piss we wouldn't have draconian fines for going on holiday in the time your taxes pay for their schooling.

OwlsEscapade · 25/06/2015 21:40

I'm not sure the queues will be short Confused I think it's a busy time with teens and uni students.
