to 'feel sorry' for inanimate objects

Maybe its the pg hormones making me all unreasonable!

But we have an old.sofa in our living room, its very old, dh had it in his bedroom when we first met, and it belonged to a family friend before that.its also quite tatty.

We have ordered a lovely new sofa and this old one is going to the tip. But I suddenly started feeling sad for it, thinking about how it wont be around when our baby arrives and other nonsense!

I used to feel sorry for toys that were sent to charity when I was little too.

Its just me isn't it...

glad to know I'm not totally insane.

Ah now, no-one's saying that. Grin

53Dragon · 26/06/2015 14:48

Cherryblossomsinspring seriously there isn't much room - I have a suitcase full of baby clothes, various other toys, a crate full of Brio, two buckets of Lego... shall I go on?! Grin

I don't like to keep nearly empty containers next to a full container (e.g. cereal box or glass of water) each other in case the full one becomes upset about seeing its empty friend..... almost like it is sitting there all full just waiting for the contents (life) to be sucked out of it.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 26/06/2015 17:02

I've thought of another one-if I'm cooking chopped onions or something and there's something left on the spoon when I finish stirring I move heaven and earth to get it back into the saucepan so it's with its friends (to die a horrible death in the pan no doubt then get eaten)

Whopper · 26/06/2015 17:26

If I'm shopping with DH and we look at fluffy toys for any reason (family gifts etc), if I pick a fluffy toy up, and make it warm by cuddling it then I have to buy it. Making the toy warm has brought it to life and I therefore can't leave it! Also if looking at fluffy toys, if I pick up one, put it down then pick up another (exactly the same variety of toy), I can't buy the second one, I have to get the 1st one I picked as otherwise the toy will be upset and feel rejected.
I am completely normal.

cozietoesie · 26/06/2015 17:30

...I am completely normal...

Errr............. Grin

eyebags63 · 26/06/2015 17:32

I feel we may be in the process of defining some new mental disorder here.

Whopper · 26/06/2015 17:34

I am normal - I tell myself frequently!
I can't leave a baked bean in a tin either.
I would happily get rid of furniture though.

SandraMelandra · 26/06/2015 17:40

Me too!

I found myself in tears not so long ago as I felt awful for the clothes in the washing machine going round, and around. Sad Sad

Canyouforgiveher · 26/06/2015 17:48

I broke a new glass the other day and cried, because it has had no life.

I think that is one of the sweetest things I have read on MN.

Great thread.

Whopper · 26/06/2015 17:55

When I was little and I did a poo I used to cry! Not because it hurt, but because I didn't want to get rid of it. I used to have to say 'bye-bye' to it before flushing. I don't do this anymore.

That's excellent MrsTerryPratchett!

TummyButtonFluff · 26/06/2015 18:39

You must all be making this up!! I'm the most sentimental person on earth and even I don't do all this! (except I do say goodbye to rooms after a holiday and take photos of empty rooms as we are going. I tell them we will see them again, or sometimes that we are unlikely to... Oh, and I was once upset as I thought the clouds were crying (rain)(I was 36).

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/06/2015 19:13

I felt so sorry for the last, lonely little Twix left in the multi-pack - it, alone, had not been picked and was languishing without friends in the wrapper!

So I ate it and immediately felt better!

EatDessertFirst · 26/06/2015 19:33

I cried when I put our Maclaren buggy out for the binmen. It was my DDs from 6 months and my DSs after that. It had done countless miles and felt like a pet.

I sobbed when a rag-and-bone man pulled up and lobbed it unceremoniously into his trailer.

maddening · 26/06/2015 19:44

I do this - I remember looking back at my plucky little micra that had 197k miles on the clock - I had to let it go as the floor needed welding again for the mot and the garage chap said it would be welding on to already welded bits and totally not worth it - I felt v sorry for it as I got in to my new 2nd hand car to drive off - it was going for scrap

cozietoesie · 26/06/2015 22:03

I still maintain that you're (nearly) all round the twist.

Grin
Bettercallsaul1 · 26/06/2015 23:53

Glad you added that "nearly", cozie! Grin

Floralnomad · 27/06/2015 00:04

Well I'm the most unsentimental person I know but last week I fancied a Bovril to drink so when I was shopping I went to buy a jar , picked it up and on the label was a picture of a bull looking at a jar of Bovril with the words 'oh my poor brother' and I couldn't buy it because I can't bear the thought of seeing that poor bull when I open the cupboard at home . I have definitely gone soft !

Bettercallsaul1 · 27/06/2015 00:39

No offence, but that story sounds like a lot of bull, Floral. Grin

dontcallmelen · 27/06/2015 00:46

I really thought is was just me, I kiss the doorstop good nighrtell Dh off for talking about selling the car, whilst we are in it, she
will hear & get upset.
Dc's old soft toys they have left at home, I check on every so often, make sure they are comfy & facing each other, so they can have a chat.

I have troubles when I'm grocery shopping. Trying to decide which bottle of milk gets to come home with me. If I look at one, I have to take it otherwise it's feelings will be hurt that I picked its friend instead. Then I move onto the bread....
