to 'feel sorry' for inanimate objects

Maybe its the pg hormones making me all unreasonable!

But we have an old.sofa in our living room, its very old, dh had it in his bedroom when we first met, and it belonged to a family friend before that.its also quite tatty.

We have ordered a lovely new sofa and this old one is going to the tip. But I suddenly started feeling sad for it, thinking about how it wont be around when our baby arrives and other nonsense!

I used to feel sorry for toys that were sent to charity when I was little too.

Its just me isn't it...

Nutella is a right bastard I reckon. You can just see him lording it all over poor old neglected marmite. Maybe I should move marmite over to baking goods cupboard - golden syrup is a right old softy.

I can't believe people who change their mind in shops and just dump items willy nilly Shock. I have to take item back to it's own kind.

I also say sorry and thank you to meat (in my head, I'm not that crazy!)

DH and I have discussed whether one of the two identical baking trays we own feels jilted because the 'top' one definitely gets used more often and should we rotate them more Blush

DH handed in his old work laptop today and the IT guy ripped it up in front of him. He had to excuse himself as he could 'hear the laptop screaming.'

What happens if you do decide to reject something? Do you brood?

I knew I wasn't the only one...

Ive thrown things into charity bags before now, put it outside, then ran down in the morning before they collect it and got the item out, couldn't bare it to leave!

Definitely.

I have a collection of soft toys that I keep in a chest and have arranged in groupings according to who I think would like to sit next to each other.

When I open the lid, which isn't often, their little faces gaze up at me.

I imagine they're really grateful for the light and I get them out one by one. Then I put them back one by one and close the lid and consign them to the dark for another few years.

I thought it was just me! The cuddly toys all have to be sitting out neatly on top of the toy box so they can all see. When my dc rejected one, I was heartbroken for it!

I totally do this. I hate throwing anything away.

dreaming that poem has traumatised me!!

The last time there was a local NCT sale and I was selling, DS3 went round collecting up various toys to sell. It was me who talked him into letting most of them stay....Blush

He has a large collection of "friends" (stuffed toys), mostly inherited from the older two, and thankfully he loves them all, doesn't have a favourite, so they all have their turn to be the special one. And when he feels guilty at not picking up a particular toy he'll say "oh, lamby can't cuddle me tonight as he's been invited for a sleepover at crabby's house" phew - that's my boy!

YANBU. Our freezer died & we got a new one. I called the council to get them to pick up the old one but they couldn't collect it for 2 weeks. They said just put it round the back of the property, which we did, but DH put it facing the house. And there it stood, for 2 long weeks, looking in through the kitchen window. I felt awful, especially when it was raining.

Oh cozie, you have no idea the brooding I do. I can hear their tiny screams of rejection as I walk away.

My dh totally gets it. I knew then I had to marry him.

Strangely in other areas of my life, clothing, things from my childhood, crap I've inherited, I'm surprisingly ruthless. I detest clutter.

But put me in a shop where I could potentially ruin the life of a pot of yoghurt and I become a gibbering wreck.

I'm almost frightened to go to the local Co-op now. Can you imagine their pain on being put in the 'Reduced ' section with the yellow or orange sticker? It's like the Last Chance Saloon.

ollieplimsoll i am still sniggering to myself about you telling your dressing gown to 'fucking get off me!' I really did think I was the only one who did stuff like that.....Grin
The thing is, in Japan and pre-Christian Britain we'd all be considered quite sane - Shintoism and Animism has no problem with this kinda stuff.
Anyhow, someone somewhere designed/made/built these supposedly inanimate things, so nothing can really be without input from either human or nature. Maybe that's what we respond to.
Ok, just completely outed myself as a tree-hugging woo-ster...I'll get my coat.....(the one with feelings!!)

Oh my god, I thought it was just me who did this. I have thrown old toys in the bin and had to take them out again because I keep picturing them in the bin all sad and discarded.

Also I snapped the sticky bit off a nappy I was about to put on DS and felt sad it would never fulfill it's nappy destiny. And I have to scrape every single last baked bean out of the can because I feel guilty for any beans left because of the long journey they must have endured just to get wasted Blush

Thank goodness it's not just me. I recently got very sad when we changed our car as the old one took our beloved dog on her last journey and it was the car our daughter came home from hospital in after she was born.

As a child I tried to bring handfuls of gravel into the garage at night as I felt bad for the stones getting cold and wet if it rained

Yesterday, in the car park of my local leisure centre, I saw the small leg of a teddy bear that had fallen off. It's now in my car. I don't know what to do with it. I just felt sorry for it Sad

I have those thoughts too. If I cram a doll in a box/draw it just feels wrong and unkind. I totally get some of the other examples people have given! LOL.

If your old sofa could still be in with a chance of staying, there's a company called Bemz that make brilliant replacement covers for IKEA sofas, even discontinued ones!

Maybe the sofa is tired and also allergic to babies...

DH and I lived in a tiny flat with two cupboards which we named Betty and Henry. Betty was prettier, with a fancy stained glass window, and Henry was a behemoth of a cupboard who kept all the manly things in like the Hoover.

We stopped saying stuff like 'oh, put it in Henry' when people started giving us funny looks Grin
