to 'feel sorry' for inanimate objects

Maybe its the pg hormones making me all unreasonable!

But we have an old.sofa in our living room, its very old, dh had it in his bedroom when we first met, and it belonged to a family friend before that.its also quite tatty.

We have ordered a lovely new sofa and this old one is going to the tip. But I suddenly started feeling sad for it, thinking about how it wont be around when our baby arrives and other nonsense!

I used to feel sorry for toys that were sent to charity when I was little too.

Its just me isn't it...

You're (nearly) all round the twist. I mean - eating in twos so that singletons won't feel lonely in your stomach? How does that work with eg a paella. Do you count the ingredients as they go in?

Completely mad. Delightfully so, perhaps, but even so .......... Grin

It's a bit......Zooey Deschanel like isn't it? Kooky and twee manic pixie dream girl who worries about tins of beans being lonely and chairs having their feelings hurt.

You are all completely mad!

I second the recommendation of Marie Kondo. Thank the sofa and let it go (let it goooo).

YAsoNBU!

I'm so glad I'm not the only weird sentimental one out here! Flowers to you all.

I had a little cry when I traded in my last car - it had been great but was v v poorly and wasn't fixable. I had to explain all this to her.

If there are two of an item I want on a supermarket shelf, I have to buy them both so the one left behind isn't lonely.

I suspect DP is getting as bad as me though. On our last holiday, DP and I went on a frickin epic trek - about five hours' worth (which for us is a very massive trek!). Only on pavements and roadsides, so I had my Birkenstocks on, which I have had for about ten years and have definitely seen better days (sole worn away at the back, coming away around the top of the heel bit) but they are very comfy. When we were packing to come home, I was going to put those Birkenstocks in the bin rather than pack them, and DP went "No! You can't! They got you to (name of distant village we had trekked to)!" So home they came and they are probably dining out on that story Grin I wouldn't mind, but DP is forever telling me to get rid of stuff!

Tell me viper - what do you do if they have a 3 for 2 offer at the supermarket?

When my first ever car failed it's MOT beyond repair we sold it for scrap. I drove past the knackers yard in my new to me car and saw it suspended in the air swinging from the crane. I cried.

Sold my beloved focus last year. Nothing wrong with it, I was just getting a brand new car. Rang my mum in tears whilst DH just looked at me in horror and all I could keep muttering is, he better take care of her, he better bloody take care of her. If I find out he's been ragging her about I'll rip his bollocks off, he better take care of her Blush

I also used to marry off my teddy bears when I was little. Couldn't abide the idea of them being lonely!

Cars are such a part of the family! crashed our family car on the way to work a few years ago. It was a write off. He had to go to the garage it was towed to to get our posessions and car seats out. He said he gave it a little pat and said goodbye from us all Sad

Confession.

The Mars Exploration Probes and Voyagers I and II make me cry.

I don't even have sentimental attachment to them!

Mitzy seen from the outside, I know what you mean but I'm the complete opposite of a manic pixie dream girl. I'm rantingly feminist, socially inept and very far from twee.

I think it would be a bit manic pixie dream girl if you pretended to be like this, but it's not about going "oh, the poor ickle last baked bean!" for effect. It's a feeling inside and I don't even tell people, except on threads like this.

Oh redtoothbrush I felt awful for the philae lander. All that being bumped about and then not getting enough sun and being miles from home :(

Report
cozietoesie · 25/06/2015 14:45

That's different, though, Cat. That's wholly understandable.

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/06/2015 14:47

Fair point Cat. I would be wary of someone weeping in a heart plucking yet winsome manner over the baked beans but an internal sob combined and then on with the stoic face is much more acceptable.

cozietoesie If there's a 3 for 2 offer on, and there are only 2 left, then I can't have the offer can I?! Smile

If there is a new tray of the same item behind the tray that only has 2 on, I have to consider carefully whether I think the 2 items from the front tray might gang up on the 1 from the behind tray, and bully it ("Haha, you're so rubbish, you were given away" - that sort of thing). If I don't think there's any danger of bullying (cotton wool would never bully, but I bet kidney beans could be right bastards) then I will buy the two from the front tray and one from the behind tray.

Overthinking? Me? Nah.

Oh don't. I was a wet-eyed mess over that.

I love this thread. It is delightfully bonkers.

I used to feel sorry for my house being left alone and quiet and empty all day while I was at work. Now I work from home (although that's not the reason why - honest) Grin

Report
ApprenticeViper · 25/06/2015 14:58

Not that long Cosie, I've got it down to a fine art and in truth the "two things left on a tray" scenario doesn't happen all that often, even less often when there's a 3 for 2 on it Grin

I can appraise a potential bullying situation in seconds. Tinned sweetcorn = no chance, chicken chargrills = definite possibility.

Yes, I realise I may need professional help.

On the subject of inanimate objects being discarded this is probably the most heartbreaking thing you will ever read, I cry every time I read it. Sad

What about the malevolence of inanimate objects?

Do you ever swear at the bed/chair/door when you stub your toe on it? Do you curse your blender when it splatters soup everywhere?

Inanimate objects can be bastards.

YANBU!

My gran gave me a whole load of baking tins a while ago. I don't want them, they're battered and old and never used, but I can't bring myself to chuck them out.

They must be 60 years old at least, they don't deserve the wheelie bin

DH and I have the most ridiculous conversations about them every now and then.

DH - shall we chuck these?
Me - no!!!
DH - why?
Me - because they're old
DH - well yes, that's why I suggested chucking them. You never use them
Me - but they're old!
DH - ok then Confused

I saw a fly-tipped freezer in a lay by a little while ago. It looked so sad and abandoned hunched up in the rain, unloved and unwanted Blush
