To hate when people use "text" instead of "texted"?

It just really bugs me.

"I text my friend yesterday" - no, you TEXTED your friend yesterday!

That's all. Rant over.

I dont like texted and refuse to say it. I dont really like saying 'I text soandso earlier' either. ( I do say text though sometimes I will admit.) I try and change it to 'I sent soandso a message earlier' but then I sometimes say 'messaged' aswell.. oh dear. Blush

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2015 00:32

You'll have to say texted when I'm in charge and start drafting my laws. My laws will also ban people from saying 'I'm loving' just to warn you in advance!

OwlsEscapade · 24/06/2015 00:43

Yesterday I texted joe - Sounds wrong Sad

Yesterday I text joe. - Sounds wrong Sad

Yesterday I sent a text to joe. - Sounds right Smile

MrsV2012 · 24/06/2015 01:21

I agree, so have always purposely said "I sent === a text earlier" to avoid brain fart Grin

mileend2bermondsey · 24/06/2015 01:31

I always say text, texted sounds wrong.
But I usually say messaged because no one really texts anymore, everyone uses Whatsapp or some form of IM, or so I'm told by the 'youth'.
When I do say messaged it comes out sounding like 'messinged.' Duno if its down to my accent, fast talking or just general idiocy though. Hope that didn't make you faint with rage OP Wink

Wait, is 'messaged' even a word or correct in this context of the sentence? As in 'I messaged him yesterday day' it isn't is it? Oh god I'm so confused!

BumpTheElephant · 24/06/2015 02:59

Sent you a text sounds much better than texted in my opinion.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 24/06/2015 04:46

Texted sounds vulgar to me, which is why I prefer to use text and wish that more others would too.

blondegirl73 · 24/06/2015 04:57

Messaged is also using a noun as a verb. You're doing the same thing with the word message as you're doing with text - see also medalled, phoned, etc. Of course it should be texted. There's no argument!

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 24/06/2015 05:10

Yanbu op! Really surprised at some of the responses here. This always really grates on me.

mugglingalong · 24/06/2015 05:27

Oh I wonder whether this will become another class indicator. If you say text then what do you call the long seat in the reception room of the house in which you relax, and do you say what or pardon? I say texted because I think that it is what my English teacher would have wanted. I drove her crazy enough with my inability to grasp the irregular verbs which existed 20 years ago. Not cool enough to have messaged people but I would say that I emailed you.

mathanxiety · 24/06/2015 05:36

I agree with you OP. I use 'texted' and can't stand 'text' as the past tense. Texted sounds perfectly correct to me. To me it's like 'I posted' the letters, or 'I toasted' the bread, or 'I roasted' the turkey. I sometimes think people use 'text' because they are hearing 'texed' in their heads.

Glad I am not the only one who feels this way.

InexperiencedDisneyMum · 24/06/2015 05:43

Texted sounds weird. I sent a text sounds much better.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 24/06/2015 06:12

Why would anyone say text??? Never heard it anywhere. Texted or sent a text are both fine. Why would you decide not to put text into the past tense? I find this very strange. YANBU!

cavamonster · 24/06/2015 06:26

I say "sent a text", I think texted sounds like hurted and refuse to use it.

sashh · 24/06/2015 06:44

I hate 'texted', I believe 'I sent a text to you' has been contracted to 'I text you'.

FuzzyWizard · 24/06/2015 06:53

Texted just sounds wrong. I see zero reason why anyone has to treat it like a regular verb if they don't want to. There is no correct and incorrect and the OED will record what is in use... It's not an instruction manual. If enough people say text that will become the "correct" past tense.

FuzzyWizard · 24/06/2015 07:02

I just looked it up in the dictionary. The definition for it's use as a verb is there but there is no past participle recorded unlike for other verbs. I don't really know why that would be but it certainly makes it difficult for anyone to claim that they definitely are right and everyone else is wrong.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 24/06/2015 07:07

Texted sounds silly.

MrsNextDoor · 24/06/2015 07:09

TO text. Texted.

I texted my friend.

I will text my friend.

YANBU!

Mamadothehump · 24/06/2015 07:16

Texted sounds silly imo.
"I sent x a text" solves the argument.

SpunkOnMyBouquet · 24/06/2015 07:20

YANBU, OP.

'Texted' is a perfectly cromulent word.

JassyRadlett · 24/06/2015 07:20

Texted sounds vulgar to me, which is why I prefer to use text and wish that more others would too.

Ha! Whereas to my ears, 'text' in that context sounds silly and uneducated.

I suspect there are no winners here...

MistressChalk · 24/06/2015 07:35

Not sure which is right and I think I might use both. But I HATE that it seems every time someone tries to say 'texted' what comes out of their mouth is 'texstsis'. SEETHE.

OptimisticOlive · 24/06/2015 07:43

I don't say text or texted, I say texed. So I'm on the fence on this one!

OrangePeels · 24/06/2015 07:49

My brother's ex used to say tex. I'll tex you. I tex him about it. Nails on a chalk board for me!
