To hate when people use "text" instead of "texted"?

It just really bugs me.

"I text my friend yesterday" - no, you TEXTED your friend yesterday!

That's all. Rant over.

Both text and texted sound made up to me.

I just say I sent X or Y a text.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/06/2015 23:45

But 'text' sounds as if you're saying 'texed', thinking that the present tense is 'tex'.
I can let you off if you avoid saying it

Icimoi · 23/06/2015 23:46

YANBU. The basic principle is that any new verb should be regular. People presumably have no problem with "tested" or "nested" or "dented", so what on earth is awkward sounding or a mouthful about "texted"? It makes no difference that the penultimate letter is an x, since(a) the original word is not "tex" and (b) if it were the past tense would still be regular as in, for instance "faxed" or "boxed".

Do all you people who don't like "texted" say "texing"? If not, why not?

Icimoi · 23/06/2015 23:47

While we're on the subject, I'm fed up with people using "bias" as an adjective - eg, "I may be bias, but my baby is gorgeous." It's just wrong

^

This. How can people possibly think "He is bias" is correct?

See also "been" for "being". FFS.

How should bias be used?

(Genuine question, it isn't a word I use)

Bias is the noun. If you want to say someone has exhibited bias, you say that he is biased.

Icimoi · 23/06/2015 23:51

Dixie, would you say "tested" as the past tense of "test"? Why doesn't that sound stupid?

MistressMerryWeather · 23/06/2015 23:54

Ah, OK.

Everyday is a school day! Only I'm paying attention right now.

venusandmars · 24/06/2015 00:00

But the wonder and beauty of the English our language is the irregular...

think --> thought (not thinked)

buy --> bought (not buyed)

And we should reject the American process of making verbs into nouns and nouns into verbs. e.g. Blue sky: a noun (sky) and an adjective (blue). God preserve us from blue-skying

So perhaps we should be obscurely British and creating new form : something that has a t and an x and and gh - touxghted, perhaps?

WhitePhantom · 24/06/2015 00:01

Glad I'm not the only one who hates it Grin

Texted and Texting came into the Scrabble dictionary in May 2012 as new valid words Wink

YABVU. Texted in a blinking stupid word and I only here the less bright use it

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 24/06/2015 00:04

*hear. That went well Blush

venusandmars · 24/06/2015 00:04

And in the glorious way in which we pronounce our language..

Touxghted could sound:

Toxed
Toffed
Tougted
Tufted
Text
Texted
Tuxted

stqueen · 24/06/2015 00:05

Or you could just say 'messaged' in lieu of 'texted / text'.

Non-problem solved.

YANBU. It makes me flinch.

Shakshuka · 24/06/2015 00:11

In the us people seem to drop the 'd' or 'ed' completely.

i often see 'first come, first serve' which really grates. So I'll be serving if I'm first?

And then our nanny texted (yes, texted) me 'the schools are close tomorrow'. Because today they are far away but tomorrow they will be close. Gah!!!

UterusUterusGhali · 24/06/2015 00:18

Texted is just asking for another "Ed" or two to go on the end;

"I texteded him".

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2015 00:19

Anything other than texted is wrong.........unless you think texted is wrong and prefer to say text.

But I'd feel like a numpty saying 'I text him yesterday'.

Oh new words are so confusing. 20 years from now we'll know which side was victorious and it will be all tinkly laughs and 'remember when people used to say text/texted instead of text/texted'.

I agree with this and the OP. As any sensible person would Smile

Icimoi gives me hope that texted will be victorious in this struggle.
