To think that UK bound lorry drivers should boycott Calais?

The local police would soon do something to protect them then. If it was my husband (he's not a lorry driver) I would be so worried about his personal saftey. How long before someone is hurt or killed?

Pata do you have any idea how many people work illegally? There are jobs on building sites which are fairly unskilled but are dirty and unpleasant which used to be well paid because they were so horrible you had to pay people well to do them. That's not the case anymore. They are generally done by gangs of illegal immigrants employed via dodgy agencies who get a cursory raid every so often then pop up a few weeks later with a different name. Takeaways, an awful lot of cleaners in London (some employed by extremely rich people), agricultural work. A lot of these types of jobs are frequently done for less than the minimum wage. I doubt you would know anything about that though. Have you ever had a proper job?

meyesmyeyes · 24/06/2015 17:38

Well one things for certain.

They need much better locks on the backs of those lorries.
I'm surprised someone has come up with a lock that can be put onto the backs of lorries - and is migrant proof.

meyesmyeyes · 24/06/2015 17:39

surprised someone hasn't come up......

Patapouf · 24/06/2015 17:49

Why are you being so personal aer? I've worked since my mid teens, all menial jobs so far if you really want to know. I'm not really sure how anyone could get to my age without working? Unless you think I'm some sort of teenage idealist with no life experience? What's your definition of proper job? Have you ever had one?

You do have quite a chip in your shoulder.

EponasWildDaughter · 24/06/2015 18:31

I wanted to ask about the lorries too. Are they not ... locked?

(i realise i'm probably missing some basic info)

StoorieHoose · 24/06/2015 18:32

You would have a chip on your shoulder if you worked on a building site and were constantly laid off due to "agencies" under cutting you and your job being undertaken by someone on £3 an hour

Aermingers · 24/06/2015 18:35

Yes I do have a chip on my shoulder. You might do too, if you had seen your family plunged into poverty despite the fact that you and your partner had worked constantly for 43 years between you. If you had to live hundreds of miles from your family because in your home town people who do the sort of jobs you do live in converted garages with shared toilets. Yes. That might make you feel a bit pissed off.

Patapouf · 24/06/2015 18:41

But I don't think it would make me misdirect that anger at somebody who hadn't caused it on a forum.

And there is nothing that indicates the people in Calais will do the same. It seems your main complaint is freedom of movement derived from our EU membership rather than refugees. asylum seekers aren't allowed to work, on bbc1 this afternoon there was a 14 year old child attempting to get into a lorry, I can't see him finding work.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 24/06/2015 18:41

I drive a lot through the Eurotunnel (not a lorry driver) and I use it because I long ago decide to avoid Calais because of the risk of being carjacked. I refuel etc about 2hr away from the tunnel, and don't stop until I am in the Eurotunnel terminal. Have complete sympathy for the lorry drivers who have no real option but to go via Calais as it is the cheapest crossing Sad
The French are now saying that it is not their problem because people can freely leave France, it is the entering of the UK that is the issue and so the border should be on the UK side of the channel. So maybe they should be allowed legally to leave France, and then stopped at the UK border, and put on a boat back at their own expense- until they run out of energy and money. If they have no money put them on a basic boat, safe but uncomfortable not seats or facilities etc, and take them back on that.

Moreshabbythanchic · 24/06/2015 18:48

patapouf how is a 14yr old going to support himself if he arrives here if he is too young to work? Is some kind soul like you going to adopt him?

Aermingers · 24/06/2015 18:55

I'm not angry with the migrants. I'm angry with the situation that has caused all this.

If he genuinely is a 14 year old child and the French have not taken him into state care then they should be ashamed of themselves.

meyesmyeyes · 24/06/2015 19:01

I work in a front line service. The hoops people have to jump through to access services are massive BUT can be completely overridden by waving human rights around.

Human Rights again...
It does have a lot to answer for Hmm

WidowWadman · 24/06/2015 19:09

What human rights would you be happy to give up then? Hmm

Patapouf · 24/06/2015 19:12

moreshabby good question. Would you honestly rather see a child hungry and homeless than see UK taxpayer money spent helping him? allowing him to attend school here for e.g.
aer I understand your point that many may lie about their age and nationality but if they have destroyed their paperwork there will be no way to prove either way, and he looked very young. France seem keen to make this more of a joint problem logistically rather than just a French one and I don't think rounding young people up to take into care is top of their priorities.

Patapouf · 24/06/2015 19:13

Yes, please let's not make this about human rights because events like these shouldn't mean we happily scrap rights for everyone.

meyesmyeyes · 24/06/2015 19:14

None.
But I think it gets mis-used and abused.

WidowWadman · 24/06/2015 19:19

So basically you wouldn't want to give them up for yourself but don't care about foreigners? Because that's what it boils down to.

Moreshabbythanchic · 24/06/2015 19:25

Of course not aptapouf, but we have to think about where he is going to live, who is going to feed and clothe him along with all the others of the same age. Also, its a known fact that many illegal immigrants lie about their ages so as not to be deported. We cant fall for every sob story especially if it is to the detriment of people who are here legally.

Moreshabbythanchic · 24/06/2015 19:26

Sorry should read patapouf

JustbeNormal · 24/06/2015 19:28

Aer you're being very unpleasant. You need to direct your anger at the employers who are acting illegally by taking on people (and paying them a pittance) who for whatever reason have no legal right to work here.

meyesmyeyes · 24/06/2015 19:29

Why don't all the people who want to let everybody in open up their back gardens and let at least one migrant camp in their backyards - for an indefinite period of time.

It would be interesting to see how many Nimbies would actually come forward to offer to do this.

It's easy to be 'kind and caring' behind the safety of a keyboard. Hmm

Alanna1 · 24/06/2015 19:30

These people are desperate to come here. Have some sympathy, even if you also want the system to work. They are people willing to risk everything - absolutely everything. The reason many don't stay in France is because they speak English/have family here and a misguided belief it is better here. (It isnt. The scandinavian countries are the best, and Germany also good - especially because it has a strong labour market). Many of them wil have status from other countries like Italy or Hungary and are trying to get somewhere they can actually get jobs. What we do about it is different from the need for humanity watching this crisis.

lljkk · 24/06/2015 19:36

So yet again, the test to pass is how desperate you are to get here. Not a test on whether you deserve to be here, just how crazy are the risks you're willing to take to get here. Do something crazy enough & you're in.

Get system for admitting the ... crazies.

lljkk · 24/06/2015 19:37

GREAT not Get system... Bloody autocorrect.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 24/06/2015 19:39

precisely - well said
