To think none of these things are "girly"?

Nail polish has been around for thousands of years, it's only relatively recently become a thing that is seen as female.

Disney princesses for fucks sake. There were not even a thing a hundred years ago. Those women were all still women.

I really don't want to start another transgender debate, what adults do is none of my business, but I do think as a society we need to address the way see gender and children. Unless I am missing it this boy has at no point said he wants breasts or a period or anything that women do actually have.

He likes the fashion and things that are seen as girly and doesn't like sodding football. Neither does most of America. Actually soccer is more of a girl's sport in the states. Maybe all American's are transgender?

Isn't it possible that by making her 9 year old's story public and trying to be so 'right on' that these parents are actually rigidly adhering to a gender binary that says no girl would ever play football and no boy would ever wear a dress? And forcing him to follow a path he might not feel like he can go back on in a few years time?

Should we not just be saying, "yes, ds that is a very nice dress, and here are some glittery shoes to match, but can you please just go tidy your room". And getting the fuck on with it without pigeonholing children?

*(And I'm totally ignoring the dresses, jewelry, tights and high heels worn in the past by men when they were considered male fashion)

You really believe one DM article point of view suggest it's the mother who thinks the child is trans? And that's ok, you can ignore me, I feel I've said my piece, perhaps a bit too vehemently. I'm nit my most articulate today, I will admit. I think you've done quite well though - it's only myself who's argued completely against your view, that's quite an achievement for aibu. I thought it may be a more contentious issues, but perhaps it is the consensus that young children do not know their mind about this matter. Again, only time will tell. It's not for us that feel happy in our gender to find out and set the line.

You wouldn't sterilise a child who said they didn't want children so why sterilise a child because they think they are transgender? Even if all "transgender" children grew up to be trans, it would be wrong to sterilise then as minors because not all adult transgendered people decide on medical intervention.

I saw this story in the daily mirror. It was pretty much what I expected from the headline. Little boy wants to play with dolls, wear dresses and nail varnish and not play football. Obviously that means he's a girl! Hmm

I agree queen, also transmen have had babies, a child might not consider this important but an adult transman might decide to leave things as much as possible so they can have children. Adoption isn't always an option for everyone and infertility can lead to serious depression.

Actually, even adults usually have to jump through hoops and even get partner's permission Shock to get sterilized.

The thing with the medicalisation and counselling for gender dysphoria is that it it essentially relies on performativity in order to gain legitimacy.

It actually forces individuals to behave and act in a certain way in order to gain the recognition they are seeking. It's not chicken and egg. If it's quacks and waddles, we can officially label it a duck.

Given that I haven't worn a skirt, dress or nail polish in living memory, I wouldn't be allowed to call myself a woman if I had to go through Charing Cross in order to do so. The hoops are less about the emotional state of the individual concerned, and more about checking they conform to the gender rules, however deep in counselling and medical terminology they attempt to appear. The services that are available for trans individuals to learn how to act, behave and dress like the opposite sex are incredible. Of course, the altruistic would applaud the supportive motif that helping individuals to pass will make them less vulnerable etc, but it is all about performance.

I don't want anyone to have to perform gender. I want individuals to be free to do whatever the hell they want, without sad face daily mail articles or 'feminists' declaring that they like girls to like girly things and boys to like boys things.

This current media trans craze is conveniently reinforcing the binary, and is managing to do so under the guise of being less rigid about gender. There is so much politically correct self-congratulation going on, it's deafening. I'm pleased that individuals who identify as trans might have an easier existence because of it, but I am utterly bereft that society is moving further and further away from equality as a result.

No children get "sterilised". They might get puberty blocking drugs which DELAY puberty until they are adults and can make up their own minds.

Lupron isn't as reversible as transactivists like to make out and children as young as 14 do get cross sex hormones and, in some cases, surgery. You'd think after spending so long on these threads goading gender critical feminists some of this information would have sunk in.
