To feel hurt that my lovely dog licking someone caused such distress.

He's just a big affectionate softy, the only trouble is he thinks everyone loves him. We went for our walk this morning in the park and sat down on a bench for a rest. We'd only been sat down a minute or so and this woman sits down next to me. We were just chatting about the weather when all of a sudden she jumped up shrieking, "ahhh the dog just licked my leg"
Now I know not everyone loves dogs but i thought it was a bit of an over reaction. I did apologise but I felt kind of sorry for my dog, who seemed to have a bit of a hurt look on his face. Wabu to have felt sorry for my dog or should I have felt more sorry for the woman?

OP posts:

For people who feel strongly about dogs is apparently serious. Pointing and laughing at them feels a bit mean.

LemonYellowSun · 22/06/2015 17:01

Not everyone shares your love for dogs.

usualsuspect333 · 22/06/2015 17:08

Yes, it's about time we had the weekly shit thread.

CoogerAndDark · 22/06/2015 17:09

My dog would have burst out from under the bench and seen off a random stranger. Once we sit down it's our territory, you see. Saves on mard arses whinging about licked ankles, so it's quite handy.

OvidWasMyFishmonger · 22/06/2015 17:12

Grin @ Cooger

Feeling strongly about dogs is not funny. Being afraid of dogs is not funny. I would never laugh at anyone for being genuinely afraid of something.

I'm fucking terrified of moths, people tell me I am irrational. I think those people are insane.

I wouldn't, however, go and sit down next to a moth, freak out when it touched me and then expect people not to laugh at me.

Nor would I expect my fellow moth fearers not to be laughed at if they started posting hyperbole about how the moth could have caused a deadly allergic reaction, or could have flown into my mouth and choked me or could have turned into a zombie moth and ate my brain even though all of those could happen

The humour comes not from people's fear, that would be mean, but from their completely bat shit crazy response to a dog licking an ankle. It. Licked. A. Foot. It's not fucking Cujo for christ sake.

Oh and the playground-esque offer of a punch up was fun too. I know it's not big and it's not clever, but really, seeing one grown woman offer to meet another grown woman for a fight is funny.

ApplePaltrow · 22/06/2015 17:21

This is the kind of thread that people think constitutes the whole of mumsnet. Hysterical small minded sad OP recounting boring story about her furbabies.

On the plus side, it makes me think much more warmly of the vitriolic post election threads.

Not allowed to troll hunt but this does seem like something a journalist might write for a reaction. Just sayin.

OvidWasMyFishmonger · 22/06/2015 17:23

It would have been funnier still if I'd arranged to meet her as she demanded LostMySanity. Wink

ShortandSweeter · 22/06/2015 17:26

i'd have also been very unhappy about it. As for the dog looking 'hurt'....?

BarneyTheDog · 22/06/2015 17:31

Sad Sad

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 22/06/2015 17:32

Why can't the dog have hurt feelings?

Dogs are people too, you know?

Maybe it wasn't hurt. It could have been disgust. The lady might not have been very tasty.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 22/06/2015 17:35

I honestly can't believe how far this thread has gone!! A lighthearted post with a lighthearted comment about her dog's feelings being hurt has certainly brought some right maddies out!! What still annoys the pants off me are the people who say"train" your dog not to lick!! Seriously, just fucking google it! This is a fundamental part of dog behaviour!! It would be cruel to try and do this!!!

Woman should not have sat next to OP if she didn't want licked, if I don't like dogs or their saliva on me then I will sit at one of the other numerous free benches and certainly shouldn't have sat right next to the dog on an otherwise empty and large bench.

@prorsum

The owner only took notice of you after you kicked his dog?!? Did you tell the parents of the kids that ? Did you think that doing that is normal? Do you think that children should grow up thinking if they aren't getting someone's attention they should kick their animal/another person! What kind of people are letting you watch their children?

I'm NOT a dog owner, but let me be absolutely clear, if I had seen you kick this dog you most certainly would not have been gloating, I would have arrested you immediately! Your a very lucky woman that the owner/other people have not reported you for this and no court in the land would listen to any of your drivel "it kept coming up to the table so I'm justified in kicking it!" - get off your arse and tell the owner to put his dog on a lead or go elsewhere!!!!

I hope you didn't lick your balls before licking the thread, Barney. I will ask MNHQ to antibac it just in case you did.

PintOfJohnSmiths · 22/06/2015 18:41

I'm not laughing at peoples fears, I'm laughing at one poster who 1) claims she kicked a dog 2) offered to meet another poster after a row on a thread about a dog licking somebodies ankle and then 3) telling people to "sod off"

She was bloody hilarious, hope she comes back, I'm crying laughing again!

prorsum · 22/06/2015 19:00

waves at pintof madam offered to change my eating habits. It would have rude not to give her opportunity to live up to her words.

Hawk More irrational ranting;
- get off your arse and tell the owner to put his dog on a lead or go elsewhere!!!! I did but he did not do anything. HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING. What part of that do you not understand.

Some of you are really odd. To some this did not happen, except the part where a dog was kicked. Think about that nutters, you dismiss it happening but believe a part that causes you to froth at the mouth. Because lickle doggies are so nice and harmless.

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 22/06/2015 19:08

I don't think any of it happened, actually.

Not the kicking, not the other parents being okay with you committing a violent crime in front of their children or the owner not calling the police on you.

You just wanted something 'clever' to post on the thread and you thought your fellow dog haters would all commend you on your story.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 22/06/2015 19:11

Prorsum, I could give a rats hairy bollock if he DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! You committed a crime and think not only was it acceptable, but in front of children letting them think that's how to behave. Was he irresponsible? Yes, was he an arsehole? Probably. Did you behave in an unnaceptable manner in front of children? Yes.

If this was a situation I was in, I would have taken the kids and moved if it was such an issue

prorsum · 22/06/2015 19:12

If ya say so lost.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 22/06/2015 19:14

AND for the avoidance of doubt, my post was not irrational ranting. Was your behaviour wrong? Oh yes

Would I have given you the jail had I seen it? Without a shadow of a doubt!

Finally a friend of Toby speaks truth. You don't care.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 22/06/2015 19:17

Your right, I don't care that a dog was mooching at your picnic table. I do care you think it's acceptable to be cruel to animals at any time, but in front of kids... Jeezo

prorsum · 22/06/2015 19:18

What doubt. I did not express any. More irrational, not I wonder if is irrational.
