To feel hurt that my lovely dog licking someone caused such distress.

He's just a big affectionate softy, the only trouble is he thinks everyone loves him. We went for our walk this morning in the park and sat down on a bench for a rest. We'd only been sat down a minute or so and this woman sits down next to me. We were just chatting about the weather when all of a sudden she jumped up shrieking, "ahhh the dog just licked my leg"
Now I know not everyone loves dogs but i thought it was a bit of an over reaction. I did apologise but I felt kind of sorry for my dog, who seemed to have a bit of a hurt look on his face. Wabu to have felt sorry for my dog or should I have felt more sorry for the woman?

OP posts:

lost I was not gloating, I recounted an experience that happened to me. Plenty of people like badly behaved dogs, starting with their owners.

Once I had spoken to the owner it was his responsibility to ensure the dog did not come back to our table and he did nothing. His actual response was to call the dog over twice and go back to reading his paper. I don't have to tolerate his dog.

The parents of the children think differently to you but that does not make you superior to them.

TheRealMaryMillington · 22/06/2015 14:46

"I wish there were parks normal people could go to where we didn't have to put up with the bad behaviour of other peoples dogs"

^ I think this too. There is a bloody great sign on the gate of the play park over our way saying "No Dogs" but yep, its pretty much full of them most weekends with their selfish, besotted owners who think their right to be accompanied by their dog at all times trumps the right of small kids to play unpestered by them not to mention without risk of stepping in their poo.

prorsum, you are coming across as a bit aggressive and kicking the dog is pretty much undermining the reasonable points that you have made elsewhere.

The OP did apologise to the woman. Which was the right thing to do.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 14:47

ren1 I said the dog should not have licked and I said the woman should not have sat on the same bench as dog and owner so I'm don't understand your point. Could you be clearer.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 14:51

Mary I knew that kicking the dog would not go down well which is why I made no reference to it in my first post; I knew that's all people would latch onto but at this point I'm happy with my decision. As I keep saying, no one has addressed the behaviour of the dog or owner and why is that.

Why has the person who called me a cunt or threatened to make me eat soft food not been called aggressive. I'd love an answer to that.

reni1 · 22/06/2015 14:51

I meant the kicking incident.

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 22/06/2015 14:53

It makes me less criminal than them, therefore superior to them.

Regardless of what the dog or owner did or did not do, it was illegal to cause harm to the dog.

But it's all the by the by really isn't it, because it didn't really happen did it?

I almost fell for it for a while, but then you started asking to meet Ovid behind the bike sheds and claiming that 6 whole other people agreed with your course of action.

1 nutter I could well believe, two would be pushing it, but 6? Really?

If you stick your appendages near a dog it may well lick them, if you don't want this to happen, don't stick your ankles near their mouth. It's quite simple really.

Dogs lick, dogs don't generally go around stalking random walkers, waiting to catch sight of a bare ankle. I know they often do on MN, but in real life, they just don't do they?

prorsum · 22/06/2015 14:53

Yes it was an aggressive act. I made a decision based on the owner's behaviour. He only took notice of me when I kicked his dog.

popalot · 22/06/2015 14:54

I'd love to see enclosed dog parks like they have in America - I'd be able to let mine off the lead without her running away and people who don't like dogs wouldn't have to be bothered by them. In my minds eye they would have special doggy equipment in them like fountains, a little pond for swimming, maybe a dog tunnel and some jumps and a slide.....like doggy heaven. An ice cream van converted to give out doggy treats....

Back to the licking, she did sit next to you. A simple 'oh sorry' and 'rufus, you know you shouldn't lick people' sort of comment would suffice. She might have had an allergy, but then maybe she should have thought about where she was sitting...? Dogs will be dogs and they like to get a sly lick in when they can. There was another thread about a dog jumping into a car and licking a child who had a massive reaction and went to hospital (big asthma attack, skin rash). But that was different as the dog was not under control and should not have jumped in the car.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 14:55

I almost fell for it for a while, but then you started asking to meet Ovid behind the bike sheds and claiming that 6 whole other people agreed with your course of action.

Because of course I would not tell the parents of children in my care, events that occurred whilst I had them. Stick to animals, humans are beyond you.

reni1 · 22/06/2015 14:58

Ovid has clarified they did not call you a cunt afterwards, but yes, the soft food threat was also aggressive. Might be good to have a more supportive tone all round, this helps neither side hear the other.

Denimwithdenim00 · 22/06/2015 15:01

Are you a cm? I am and am struggling to think of which of the 6 areas of learning 'kicking a dog' falls under?

Would they be knowledge and understanding of the world? If so what an atrocious role model you are.

Anyone who jumps up because a dog licks them sounds bat shit crazy to me.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 15:02

IMO that's just semantics but whatever.
re the tone. The thread seriously got out of hand and I'm not an innocent party. I heard the op loud and clear which is why I did not berate her actions, but I also heard a section of the dog owning crowd and they cannot fathom a badly behaving dog, but can certainly spot what they see as a badly behaved human being.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 15:03

No I'm not a CM. I have actual friends with children. They entrust me with many things, including not being bothered by a dog.

prorsum · 22/06/2015 15:10

Sadly I have to go. To the park. With kids. It's been interesting and should definitely go to into classics.

LostMySanityCanIBorrowYours · 22/06/2015 15:11

I shouted once when a dog licked inside my ear, unfortunately I shouted at the same time it started to lick my mouth...

I caught rabies and died Sad

In my defense I didn't shriek or leap up. I just started to shout "Ger off me ya dirty creature"

I did know the dog. It didn't just randomly stalk me through the park waiting to stick it's tongue in my ear. That would just be odd.

OvidWasMyFishmonger · 22/06/2015 15:20

reni, the soft food comment wasn't a threat. It was an answer to a question.

I said that the poster was - quote - "very lucky that you didn't have me or someone like me witness it" and " wouldn't be gloating then."

They asked what they would be doing.

I admit I was being smartarse with the one-liner "Eating soft food".

However I didn't suggest that I was going to "make [me] eat soft food" as they alleged. My response was cocky rather than seriously aggressive. The point was that IF I had been there or IF someone who also believes kicking a harmless animal had been there they WOULD have been eating the proverbial soft food. It's a dumb thing to do, kick a harmless animal. One day it will result in the kicker being bitten by a shocked, hurt, angry dog or someone in the immediate vicinity being bitten - e.g. the children who were supposedly with that poster. It will also one day result in a witness being unwilling to tolerate it and turning on the aggressor.

If I was going to be deliberately aggressive I'd have been far more overt about it. I don't much see the point in trading actual threats or suggesting people pm me for an address and a place to meet. I'm not a meathead and this isn't a backstreet south London pub.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 22/06/2015 15:31

Ovid

Christ, you don't have to justify yourself to this lot - they won't be able to read your words through the hazing of spittle on the screen.....

Anyway, while I don't mind being licked by a dog I do object to having other people's bullshit thrust at me so I'll leave you all to carry on frothing....

PintOfJohnSmiths · 22/06/2015 15:55

I did not threatened to ensure Ovid would be eat soft food so sod off Toughie

I'm absolutely howling at this thread, it needs to go in classics

reni1 · 22/06/2015 16:13

If there is a vote I'd be against this going to classics, I am not howling at it. It is the uglier face of mumsnet, some posters might find it funny, not my kind humour. I understand none of these threads are real and neither you, ovid nor you, prorsum were out to hurt anybody.

Dogs appear to be a very emotive issue, so this really should not be a mumsnet classic, it lacks the supportive element. If in doubt, assume good intend and clumsy execution.

WixingMords · 22/06/2015 16:15

It's all going a bit wonky on here isn't it?

People getting frothy about thinking others are being frothy.

I'm still reading from the viewpoint that The Lady that was Licked having just explained in surprise and hasn't passed it any thought since. Little does she know there's a thread on a discussion board containing dramatic defence of doggie feelings and rights, threats and offers of fighting, and where she's been called, ultimately, a stupid hysterical bitch for sitting on a park bench.

usualsuspect333 · 22/06/2015 16:32

Bloody nora, this thread is insane.

I haven't laughed so much at a thread since 'cat me you cunt'

reni1 · 22/06/2015 16:47

Sneering and laughing at people (on both sides) who got a bit carried away is unhelpful.

usualsuspect333 · 22/06/2015 16:51

You can either take this thread seriously or you can see it for what it is. Another bonkers dog thread in AIBU.

Denimwithdenim00 · 22/06/2015 16:52

Na it's no classic. Classics are funny this is a yawn fest with the nasty overtones of animal cruelty.

Not funny at all.

Denimwithdenim00 · 22/06/2015 16:53

It will be toddlers blinded by cat shit soon.
