To ask: If a nice person becomes obnoxious when drinking,

does that mean they're generally ok but should avoid alcohol? Or does it mean that they're showing their true colours?

I've been dating a guy for a couple of months, and we get along brilliantly when he's sober. (I've known him for a year in professional circles that sometimes overlap, and we've always clicked.) But once I started seeing him socially, I discovered that I really don't enjoy his company when he's been drinking. (It's hard to carry on a conversation because he sometimes forgets to pause for breath, tells stories that ramble through infinite tangents, and often misunderstands things I say and takes umbrage.)

AIBU to ask him to not drink when he's with me? Or is it a red flag that I should run a mile from?

Everything everybody is saying is exactly right. I'm not sure what's going on with my brain!

I don't think so. When I'm drunk, I find everything hilarious and tell people too much. I don't suddenly become horrible!

I don't see how a nice person can be temporarily horrible. It'd be more like inhibitions go, mask slips in my opinion

My dp is one of the nicest people I've ever met when sober, after a few drinks he's a dick. Not abusve, or cruel or anything, just really fucking irritating and dense. But I find most drunk people irritating and dense. I've just accepted that we won't have any decent conversations when he's been drinking, and to be fair he has cut down so it's not that often.

I don't think with my DP that its a case of the mask slipping and he's really a dick underneath, I think as well as being dropping inhibitions alcohol slows down the brain and can make people's thought processes less rational. So an intelligent funny person can become quite stupid and boring when drunk.

The problem is when a drunk person is angry or violent, or gets confrontational with no need.

In general I find that drunk people are only possibly enjoyable for other drunk people.
But if you are dense or just nuts is not a big problem.
