to think strapless wedding dresses aren't very flattering.

They look so unflattering on most people, especially if the top bit is too tight, resulting in any back and side fat 'spilling' up and over the sides of the dress.
You see Brides spending the whole day hoicking the dress up every five minutes - not a good look on your wedding day surely.

Anybody else think that the more traditional dresses look better?

Yes that's the kind of dress I am on about. I'm sure you looked great in it, I personally just don't like them.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/06/2015 17:41

I also meant to say that in 30 years it will be easy to date a wedding photo to the 2000s just by the strapless dress. In the same way that 80s brides always wore big puffy sleeves a la Princess Diana. I still love her dress (was from its time but still classy for the period) - shame it was copied so badly by all and sundry!

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:42

I'm not a huge fan of the 1950's style wedding dress but I like the idea of that chic 1960s cocktail shape.

Cherryblossomsinspring · 18/06/2015 17:43

I looked fab in mine! Doesn't really matter though does it. Most brides look pretty special on their wedding day even if you aren't a fan of the dress itself.

iloveport · 18/06/2015 17:43

I don't think they were ever meant for large chested ladies.

Laquila · 18/06/2015 17:44

When I was looking for my dress 6 years ago it was practically impossible to find anything not strapless. I went to 5 (FIVE!) dress shopa in one town in one day, and in every one I told them I was looking for something with sleeves. In each a bf every one they nodded, tilted their collective dopey heads and said something along the lines of "Mmhmmm, yep sure but...have you considered strapless??"

So I had one made, and then Kate Middleton basically copied it but put longer sleeves on it so she pretty much owes me BIG time.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:44

I've never seen a wedding photo that didn't look dated. But a photo of a 1956 fashion victim bride looks more chic to our eyes than a 2006 fashion victim bride.

But give it enough time and even the 1980s wedding look will be back in fashion. Maybe.

My Dsis looked amazing in her dress, she has a small bust. With me, I'd look awful because I'm an F cup so I just look like I was spilling out of it.

I guess it depends on the one wearing.

scarletforya · 18/06/2015 17:46

Yanbu

They're awful.

voluptuagoodshag · 18/06/2015 17:46

I agree but it is down to individual taste I guess. I just think they are a waste of a good reason to get dressed up. They all look samey and unless fitted exactly on a fit bride, yes they are unflattering. And then you get so many head and shoulders shots which make the bride look naked. So much potential for different styles and necklines but all strapless ones look exactly the same

Penguinandminipenguin · 18/06/2015 17:47

I don't think they suit everyone. I'm not the slimest of people, so I had straps and a jacket type thing with my dress, as strapless really wouldn't have suited me!

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:48

I think the recent trend (it seems to have died out a bit thankfully) for brides to be St Tropez-ed within an inch of their lives will look more dated than the strapless dress.

morelikeguidelines · 18/06/2015 17:48

The problem I have with them is that they usually involve a corset top. I did not want to wear a corset top at my wedding as I wanted to eat all the lovely food I had paid for! Plus the small boobs problem mentioned above.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:49

I wore a sundress and had wild flowers in my hair

Sounds lovely! Corsets are so not my thing.

MerdeAlor · 18/06/2015 17:50

Well I don't know about you lot but I looked frickin awesome in mine.

to think strapless wedding dresses aren't very flattering.
Starbrite00 · 18/06/2015 17:52

It depends on the dress and the figure.
I wore strapless but it was custom made so fitted my body and was corset.
But who cares as long as the woman wearing it is happy.

CuppaSarah · 18/06/2015 17:53

I like strapless dresses. Its those bloody lace keyhole back dresses that are.doing my head in now! They're lovely, but everyone wears them and they have lost their specialness.

My wedding dress was strapless and I didn't hoick it up once. Or have back fat, because my seamtreaa was amazing and the dress didn't need much doing anyway. I looked bloody amazing!

BolshierAyraStark · 18/06/2015 17:56

Depends who it's on surely?
Oh & a strapless gown that fits correctly never needs hoiking up.

ElkTheory · 18/06/2015 17:56

I agree with you. I think strapless wedding dresses are flattering to only a very small minority of women. Obviously, people should wear what they want and feel happy wearing. But I think it's a case of a fashion that really doesn't suit most women.

redfairy · 18/06/2015 18:02

I personally don't think strapless dresses are appropriate for a church wedding and feel it's immodest. For any other other ceremony I think fine provided they fit and the bride has not got her pint in a half pint pot ?

LokiBear · 18/06/2015 18:04

I looked amazing in mine. Grin I wore a feather bolero though as it was a winter wedding. I have a small waist and average books so a corset backed, a line dress suited me really well. Absolutely no hoiking up either, but it was well fitted.

greenishfingers · 18/06/2015 18:05

Am a bit stocky in the shoulders. Spent ages a few years ago looking for non-strapless wedding dresses as that neckline has never looked good on me. Very limited choice. My bridesmaids didn't want them either.. Yanbu they are unflattering and a bit done to death.

LikeIcan · 18/06/2015 18:08

If you're tall & slim they look stunning. Anyone else.......probably not a good idea.

iloveport · 18/06/2015 18:11

I've seen some horrors on ,"Say yes to the dress", I just feel like shouting, "stop bloody hoiking it up, the weight on top is too much!"
