to think strapless wedding dresses aren't very flattering.

They look so unflattering on most people, especially if the top bit is too tight, resulting in any back and side fat 'spilling' up and over the sides of the dress.
You see Brides spending the whole day hoicking the dress up every five minutes - not a good look on your wedding day surely.

Anybody else think that the more traditional dresses look better?

I look good in mine, not overweight in the shoulders, mind.

Sidge · 18/06/2015 17:20

There's strapless and there's strapless...

Gruntfuttock · 18/06/2015 17:24

Oh my god Sidge! How demure. What a tiny waist.

Sidge · 18/06/2015 17:24

I would just like to point out that's not me Grin

Beautiful girl, tiny waist, terrible dress!

Mamiof3 · 18/06/2015 17:26

If you have the gorgeously toned slim arms for it they look lovely

Normally there's the underarm fat spillage issue though

I like wedding dresses with long or 3/4 sleeves

knowsaymuhfuh · 18/06/2015 17:27

Different things flatter different people and even for those people it will change at different weights, hair colours, shapes etc.

So as others have said, deep ends.

expatinscotland · 18/06/2015 17:27

They are horrid. Look like the person forgot to put their dress on over their undergarments.

fancyanotherfez · 18/06/2015 17:27

When I got married 10 years ago, every wedding dress I saw was strapless. I couldn't find one with sleeves. I thought mine looked fabulous, and still do, but it did become overused. Its a bit unfair to say they all look unflattering. It depends on your figure. And as someone else said, its the brides dress. If she likes it and feels great in it, good for her. Enjoy the wedding if you go, don't go if you are going to bitch about the dress/ venue/ cost etc

DeidreChambersWhatACoincidence · 18/06/2015 17:28

I agree with you OP.

I like sleeves on a wedding dress but strapless seems to be the most popular style.

FunkyPeacock · 18/06/2015 17:29

I agree in the sense that the number of brides who genuinely suit the strapless style are outweighed by those who don't

They can look stunning but all too often don't

Legionofboom · 18/06/2015 17:30

I think Kate Middleton has sparked a new lacy sleeves trend

I'm not keen on lace sleeves either. Kate Middleton normally looks lovely but I was disappointed by her wedding dress.

CattyCatCat · 18/06/2015 17:30

I think it does depend entirely on the body of the wearer. Some people look fantastic in them whilst others really don't suit them at all. If the bride is happy with the way she looks in a dress though then all fine and good. Her day, her choice, who cares what anyone else thinks.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:30

I'm not a huge fan of them but they seem to have gone out of fashion anyway.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:33

Having said that I looked lovely in mine. Very demure. Very Audrey Hepburn.

OurGlass · 18/06/2015 17:34

YANBU, and this new trend for short wedding dresses - they look ghastly to me.

SantanaLopez · 18/06/2015 17:35

I loved Kate Middleton's.

this new trend for short wedding dresses

I would have loved to pull off a short wedding dress!

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/06/2015 17:36

Oh I love a knee length wedding dress. They look so casual and stylish and make a refreshing change from the acres of stiff satin and lace you see.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/06/2015 17:36

I really don't like them - they are bland and old-fashioned and have become more or less a bridal "uniform". A bride should look unique - now you drive past a church and just expect to see someone in a strapless dress. Yawn. I love it when a bride hasnt chosen one. I find it difficult to find something Nice to say when people show me pictures of the type of dress they're probably going to choose for their wedding so I comment on the beading or material or something.

SlightlyJaded · 18/06/2015 17:37

I got married ten years ago. Strapless dress. I was fairly slim back in the day so no back fat, but the main thing was that it was fucking expensive boned and quite 'high' at the front. Didn't have to hoik once

It really depends on the strength and line of the bodice.

I'd look a sight in it now though. (wistful)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/06/2015 17:37

Mitzy You gotta wonder why a bride turned up for her wedding in that hideous mistake of a dress. She's gifted yes, doesnt mean her guests want to see.

MrsHathaway · 18/06/2015 17:37

I think more traditional shapes are better for most budgets. The style in question can look fabulous on a woman with a 30c chest and a five-figure dress budget.

I think it looks just wrong in church - a FOAF who is a priest remarks that he has to look away when the bride kneels at the altar because he can usually see right down to her navel

And in too many photos they look naked.

A photo with bride and five bridesmaids all in strapless dresses is a sign of no imagination IMHO.

misssmilla1 · 18/06/2015 17:38

this new trend for short wedding dresses - they look ghastly to me.

I wore a 1950's style tea dress length short dress with lacy sleeves to mine, so shoot me. Grin

I'm 5'4 with an hour glass shape so it suited me way better than the strapless / fat arm equivalent or my other horror which is the tight over the arse mermaid style, drawing attention to how large your arse is.

meyesmyeyes · 18/06/2015 17:39

As well as being unflattering on most people (with the exception of looking stunning on some ) I think it's too much flesh for a wedding, especially the Church bit.

But I agree that it's probably all down to fashion.
Still, will be glad when it hopefully goes out of fashion Smile

It depends on how fat you are I suppose...

elderflowerlemonade · 18/06/2015 17:39

I wore a sundress and had wild flowers in my hair
