www.gumtree.com/p/live-out-nanny-babysitting-jobs/-live-out-au-pair-to-look-after-my-autistic-son/1118133617

First of all live out au pairs don't exist, secondly this job doesn't even come close to paying minimum wage and the poster sounds quite menacing! Please tell me this was a Mumsnetter with too much time on their hairy hands who posted this as a joke?!

I get the impression that he doesn't really know what he's asking for. He's obviously heard that au pairs get pocket money rather than wages, but doesn't understand why (i.e. that they have no living expenses because they live in the family home and have all meals and bills paid for etc.)

He's not going to get anyone from that ad. I did wonder, reading it, if he was on the spectrum as well as his son, but that's just speculation.

UptheChimney · 15/06/2015 14:12

When I had an au pair, she was paid extra for "baby"-sitting eating pizza with my 11 yo DS while they watched telly if I needed to be out for work events.

BabyMurloc · 15/06/2015 14:23

If you add up the hours it's a 50 hour week. That doesn't include the seemingly compulsary 2 days of babysitting. If £130 a week is the pay that's £2.60 an hour...

Newmanwannabe · 15/06/2015 14:25

Maybe it's his disgruntled STBEx DW proving a point!

ApologiseForAnotherDay · 15/06/2015 14:26

I came on to start a thread about this ad! Ridiculous, I've reported too. Just hope no one is desperate enough to apply for it!

LurkingHusband · 15/06/2015 14:32

Just hope no one is desperate enough to apply for it!

The fact someone felt able to post this advert in the first place, plus the general lack of discussion about it (save for MN Smile) should underscore the fact that there are people desperate enough to apply for it. Sad.

auntyentropy · 15/06/2015 14:44

I listened to a nice friend insisting that "Live Out Au Pair" was totally a real thing. I was Confused but I'm now reassured that it's not just me, it's just a euphemism for someone who does a nanny's job for minimum wage or, as in this case, much less.

ThisTimeIAmMagic · 15/06/2015 14:55

Leopard you made me properly snort with the line about his best mate African prince Grin

I have reported it but I don't think Gumtree will give a shiny shit. Won't email him as I am hoping he's a troll.

MackerelOfFact · 15/06/2015 14:55

Tempted to apply asking if I need to be able to cook...

PenguinBollards · 15/06/2015 14:59

It's been deleted, so either he was shamed by the barrage of emails he received, or Gumtree have a no 'slaves wanted' ad policy.

MrsKoala · 15/06/2015 15:24

Is anyone else hoping AdMan comes on to this thread to tell us what a bunch of bitter old bitches we are? Grin

Kateg28 · 15/06/2015 16:08

To Angelos,
The £520 per month is absolutely fine if they live in and have no bills to pay. It is much more than I have at the end of the month to myself when I have paid mortgage, food bills, fares, etc.

It is pocket money and is used for their own personal shopping (toiletries etc) and hobbies and nights out.

It is more than a student at university has. When I had an au pair they had no bills whatsoever (except mobile phone) and had food provided. They didn't work 12 hours a day though, more like 5 hours and only on 4 days a week plus maybe one night a week babysitting. They only got £70 per week but this was some time ago now as my son is sitting AS levels.
And if they could drive, they got occasional use of a car...

PenguinBollards · 15/06/2015 16:16

I would LOVE that to happen, Mrs Koala Grin

Madea · 15/06/2015 18:41

Probably an error. £1300 a week? they forgot to add an extra zero?!

BobbyGentry · 16/06/2015 00:16

Pocket money is surely the household kitty money to pay for the kid's clubs, swimming, food & transport? Flabbergasted if not... wonders if ad has been barraged by a load of disgruntled MNers Smile
