AIBU?

To feign illness to duck out of special family party

I'm 6wks pregnant and it's my SIL's 40th birthday party coming up. They're having it at their house.

No one knows (about me being pregnant) and I want to keep it quiet for a few weeks yet. I'm not feeling the best and it would definitely raise suspicions if I turned down a drink as I have never been known to do this before!!

I don't particularly want it coming out at the party since we'll be celebrating her special day and because we want to wait a while. But my DSis will be upset and probably annoyed if we don't turn up to SIL's party.

WIBU to pull a sickie or any suggestions of how I could hide this??

One thing you could do if it's generally known that you are trying for a baby is simply to say that you have cut out alcohol and caffeine to increase your chances of success "going all in". Close to the truth and no one can argue with that.

Thanks for the tips everyone.. Will mull it over some more but looks like I'll be going with the always having a glass in my hand and seeing how it goes..

I don't think anyone will cotton on that I'm hiding a pregnancy when I've always got a glass of wine on the go.

I used to say I was on a diet, so that covered the no alcohol and the fussy eating (e.g. no pate etc)

A friend got pregnant just before she left for a new job, and told no-one at that point. Her usual is vodka and cranberry. At her leaving do she always had a glass in her hand, and was seen to be drinking - but it was just plain cranberry, no vodka.

She ran round getting drinks for everyone else, so that nobody got to buy her a drink. Lots of high spirits a glass always in your hand ... no-one will notice. You'll draw more attention to yourself by not going.

Congratulations, by the way! Flowers

I found out I was pregnant just before bil and sil got married .We didn't want to share and steal their thunder so I drank 'gin' and tonic, aka just tonic. Whoever anyone other than dh offered me a drink I either said I felt a bit pissed so was going to sit out this round, or asked for a softy which I got away with as it was a really hot day. Given that the rest of the time I had a 'gin' I got away with that.

During the meal dh and I put our wine glasses next to each other, he drank from both and I pretended to sip it without drinking any. No one noticed.

People are less observant than you think if it seems as though you're driving since if the time you can pull the hungover card too to explain if you're having less or a different drink than normal. And once everyone else is a bit drunk they won't notice

I would definitely try and find a way to go home early and leave them all to it. When I was pregnant 8 o'clock was a late night!

The time I didn't get away with it was when I used the antibiotics for tooth problems.

I got away with it when I pretended to sip and held my glass. Good luck!

Yes I did the fake drinking really no one noticed if I'd have uttered the word antibiotics the game would have been up! Everyone's too busy getting drunk to notice what your doing plus house party perfect to wander off put drink down/tip drink away. I went to 2 big bbq's and no one noticed.
