thinking they have used my address to gain a school place?

We bought this house at the end of last year.
It is very close to an excellent, very much over subscribed school.
The couple we bought it from had a little kids and we're moving to the next (cheaper, not good schools) area along for a bigger house to fit all their kids in.
Not had any mail for them as assuming they had a redirect set up.
This week we've suddenly had a few bits for them. Including a 'to the parent/guardian of xxx' from the outstanding school
It seems they have applied from this address rather than their own, where they stand no chance of getting in.
What should I do? I feel like returning it to school and saying they haven't lived here since December but then I feel sly. Then I think another child will have missed out on their rightful place. And why should they move to a considerably cheaper area and still get the perks of the more expensive one? My child hasn't missed out on this btw but they have 4 kids now guaranteed a place in that school from this.

Just return to sender - no longer at this address and let the school sort it out.

If I received any letters regardless of what it is to our house for previous owners I return to sender with note saying when they moved.

That's exactly what I would do.. Return the letter and say they don't live there anymore giving the real address if I have it.

They could have applied before they moved (can't remember the application dates) but still it's not your problem.

I'd send the letter back to the school with 'not known at this address' written on the envelope. That's not sly, that's just what you do with post that's for previous occupants when their redirect runs out.

Surely they might have applied long before they moved and the places have just been allocated but unless you've opened the letter you don't actual know if it's an offer of a place or a refusal letter.

I'd forward the letter to them but if it really bugs you return it to the school. They've only been gone six months.

They would of applied in September 2014 for a place this year. So they didn't apply once sold but they should of updated the school about the change of address.

The application period is something like October - January with decisions released mid April in most of England at least. It's probably about settling in sessions in the summer term. Definitely return to sender with the date they moved out

If they have a child already in the school they may have not updated their address. It could be for a child already in the school?

Yabu. You don't know they've done that at all, and have no reason to think so. They could have applied a long time ago.

The cut off date is October, so they applied from 'their' address not yours.

Winter it doesn't matter how long ago you apply, it is where you are living at the end of the application period that counts. I agree that it's not the OP's affair but she should return the letter to the school making clear the address is not correct.

YABU I am a lurker and rarely post but I am a little irked by your OP!

They have done nothing wrong. When the application was made that was their address!! There is nothing in the application process that states you must inform if you move before the offer is made.

I don't understand why you feel aggrieved. They didn't ' use your address to gain a school place' they used their own as it was at the time.

Where I live you have to put down the address you are in in January and that you expect to me in the September. If you move before September you are required to inform admissions. If the same rules apply with you (you can check on the council website) then they've abused the system and with 3 kids coming behind that is massively taking the piss. If you felt like really dobbing them in you could write to the admissions team at your council noting the dates they moved out.

It sounds like they rightly applied from their home address. But the letter is incorrectly addressed to a family at an address they do not live at any more. I would just return to sender, with "Not Known at This Address Any More." It's factual. The school can take it from there in any way they wish to do so. It's not your issue to feel guilt or judgement or otherwise.

Do you the 3 children are still in the same school? As they have 4 children do you really begrudge them a 4th place? It would be a bugger having 3 in one and 4th in another?

There should be something in the applications procedure about what to do if you move before the January deadline. They should have followed it.

Do you still get much post for them? Returning it all to sender usually dries it up fairly quickly.

All of the others have been junk apart from this, it is franked from the school. It is a letter about a settling in session for their eldest child, the first to go to school. I haven't opened it but friends with children also going there have got that letter this week so it is an assumption.
While applications open in September, they close in January and you must use the house you are living in then. We completed end of November.
Cruikshank- it's is a 2 up 2 down house, certainly neither big nor posh. My kids do not go to a big posh school either, or the one in referring to in my op. It's a little one, under subscribed and on yearly ofstead inspections. I have no desire to move them to the outstanding one either but yeah carry on with your pointless contributions
