The Saudi Supreme Court has just upheld the sentence of 10 years in prison and 1000 lashes against the blogger Raif Badawi. He could be flogged again tomorrow.

This is a very moving video about Raif made by his ten year old son

Amnesty are asking people to phone the Saudi embassy in London before 10 tomorrow to ask them to halt the flogging and free Raif unconditionally.

You can phone 02079173000 and either choose option 2 or hold.

Really good to see so many peoplw phoned. I got through after several attempts but it was engaged for ages, hopefully with others doing the same. There is a day of action for Raif next Thurs, think ot is organised by Index on Censorship. They are asking people to ask their MPs to sign their letter and go to their meeting at House of Commons. Will put a link on this thread once kids are in bed.

Thanks Beatrice - the meeting at HoC is new on me.

But give me your information and I'll Tweet to the MPs.

I suspect its been postponed until something huuuge happens and it can 'be buried'.

I doubt it for the simple reason they don't see any need to bury it. They are quite confident in their right to be going this.

Maybe he will be pardoned in the run up to Ramadan and Eid.

It's quite often the way.

  • you have possibly got it in one!

This is a new king of Saudi Arabia - he has stayed all floggings since he came into his new imperial office - although he has to stand up to the Saudi Religious Police who implement Islamic law on the streets. They cane females (Saudi or Western) who inadvertently show an ankle under their garbs.

The Supreme Court has upheld Raif Bawadi's sentence - but now the King has to find a way to set it aside without upsetting the Religious Police.

When I watched the video of Prince Charles shaking hands with all the Saudi Arabian Princes, it reminded me of a mafia mob with the head honchos!

This is the page from Index on Censorship. You can see which MPs, MSPs etc have signed their letter to be delivered to 10 Downing St on 17 June. Am going to email my MP to ask him to sign it and attend the meeting.
