i have made many post on AIBU about my daughter and how she has played up how difficult things have been bla bla.. But im so so pleased with her right now. she has got a job :) well she done a days trial and now shes on 2 weeks training. so fingers crossed they keep her on. its only her 4th day so early days but she seems to like it. shes getting up in the mornings with a bit of get up and go and seems happy. so im hoping this will be a good turning point.

i do have a question though she is 17 and being paid 4.20 an hour. shes 18 in july will her age automatically go up when shes 18

yeah im hoping will be the same for her. shes never had proper money before so i think she will like that.

i was (thinking) about letting her have her first months wages to herself. then the following month start charging her house keeping? also she wont get the full month.

You have no idea of the ops financial circumstances. And I think it is perfectly resonable for a working adult to pay towards household expenses.

My daughter paid from her first wage. Although to be fair, she does have a reasonably significant sum in savings. And she fully appreciate that if she was to be living in her own, what she pays me wouldn't go anywhere near her living costs.

WIt till she's established before talking about taking board money OP. If it hasn't occurred to her then 4 days in might not be the best time.

NMW goes up for everyone in October so she will get another pay rise then too. Maybe wait a few weeks, and then ask her if she would like to help out with paying for a food shop sometimes. She probably has no idea how much everything costs and it would be an eye-opener for her.

i did say i was thinking about it. said i might let her have her first wage to herself. no money is not great at the moment. rent arrears and stuff not good but will get there.

when i do take money from her i was thinking 25 a week? but the 100 a month seems alot :/

when i was her age i was given everything on a plate never had to pay anything. then when i moved out found it impossible money wise. so dont want her to be the same

I think letting her keep her first month's money is a nice idea. I would sit down with her and show her the family budget, the cost of food and bills so she starts to understand how much it costs to live. Then work out a reasonable contribution for her to make. I think it will be easier for her to understand why you want a contribution if she can see how much everything costs.

i probably will do that chaz this month it wont even be a full months wage so probably unfair.

My dd matured overnight when she started working. Best thing that happened to her (and subsequently me). I hope it goes well.

Like you, my DD matured incredibly once she started working, I too let her have all of her first salary. I think it is only right for children to pay for their keep irrespective of how much they earn as it stands them in good stead on what their life ahead holds.

Unfortunately for my DD due to my low income I have to take half of her salary to get by. She works was an apprentice and earns only £2.73 an hour and I feel awful asking her for so much but she is wonderful and understands as I showed her the outgoings per month.
