Neighbour issues....

Have just gone and seen 4 bikes locked to our railings in our front garden. Thought at first they were friends of my son until he saw someone else locking their bike there and then hurrying into next door.

Have just knocked there. Family house with visitors- No apology, just been told that's what students do.
I've said I don't mind them being left there, but I object to not being asked.
These neighbours and their visitors have previous form for parking over our drive and appearing not to think it unreasonable.

Is this thoughtless and/ or bloody rude?!
Or am I being unreasonable.....

Using private home railings is a bit off. Generally think public building type ones are fair game.

Have you asked them to remove them?

I said I thought it was rather rude to not ask first. If they had, I wouldn't care.
Point is that neighbours themselves are thoughtless ...

It's a little thoughtless, but I'd say as long as they aren't making a habit of it then I'd let it lie.

Bit awkward this one, because if was a hedge or wall on a private garden you wouldn't mess as it's someones private property. The outside (streetside) of someones railings feels different to me but not sure why, maybe because that's what you do when you're out and about with bikes.

No the railings are in our front garden, dividing it from the neighbour. Not on the street, I wouldn't care about that!

Which side are the bikes on? Your side or your neighbour's? If it's your side then they have gone on your property and YANBU. But if it's their side then YABU, so long as they haven't damaged the railings in any way, then what does it matter even if the railings are legally yours?

If in your garden can you remove and put in shed. Owner pays x amount to get back. Shocked they did that!

You should tell them to move the bikes now. Your neighbours and their visitors sound arrogant and entitled. Nip this behaviour in the bud before they start using your washing line and having parties in your garden

Oh I thought you meant bikes on the street, but chained to your railings. Actually in your garden is v strange.

if neighbours are generally total twats then feel free to make an issue of this. Just depends if it's worth getting your blood pressure up.

It would be quite funny to put on an extra (cheap) lock and deny all knowledge so they have to muck about getting bolt cutters.

A place near me has a sign saying "all bikes chained to the railings will be removed and left on brick lane" (brick lane v near and well known spot for selling stolen bikes)

I'd buy a massive gate and lock it. Just to prevent them getting their bikes back. Twats. It's a shame b&q's shut.

These people are unpleasant. It's weird, when challenged they cannot accept their behaviour is rude!

I am almost speechless. In your position I would ask them to move them out of your garden and make it clear they do not have your permission to enter your garden.

Sadly I have known some really awful 'bright' people who thought it was hilarious to behave obnoxiously like this and see what the reaction was. They were not my friends, I hasten to add.

Incredibly rude. Insist that they move them - there is no point in trying to be pleasant with people like this.

is there any way to lock your front gate, meaning they cannot access their bikes without disturbing you, when you can launch a huge rant at them?

I just cannot understand why anyone would go into someone else's garden and lock their bike up there when they're visiting next door. What on earth goes through their minds?
