Holidayed in S. Africa some years back and on one of the drives a passenger asked the guide (who had a rifle) what would happen if they were to get out of the car (we were next to a group of 'sleeping' lions). The guide replied that you wouldn't do that but nevertheless she clicked the door latch to demonstrate. Those lions went from zero to full alert in less time than it took you to read zero to full alert. It was an unfamiliar noise and it meant danger or food. Quite scary! Saw the same lions the next morning after they had took down a gazelle. Nothing left but a skull!

Yeah Blu - you are right of course. But from what I saw of the picture taken by the car behind this poor woman, the window was right down, the lioness could get her head in through it, no paws required to force the window down.

I have also been to that safari park. It is very sad what happened and it puts the good work that some wildlife parks do in a bad light. That poor woman.

I also live in SA (hello to villanous and More). I'm afraid people's first reactions are always going to be to point out the stupidity. But yes, we should step back and think of this woman's family. So tragic.

Unfortunately people don't realize they are part of the food chain and a wild animal has no reasoning. Once went to California and visited the beach where elephant seals haul out. Rangers often had to tell people that sitting children on these enormous creatures was not a good photo opportunity

Don't you think this thread is a bit distasteful? Of course most would agree the window should have been closed but I think the poor woman has paid the ultimate price for it. No need for a thread pointing out a mistake.

Everyone calling this thread awful is just so silly. I think it's GOOD to discuss these things. Bringing it out in the open might stop just ONE person from opening their window. There could be people who think it's fine...who think lions or whatever won't come near humans. It needs to be discussed.

Bella "Most" isn't all. Better to talk about it. The poor lady in question obviously thought it was ok to have the window down...or she'd not have been IN that situation. She won't be the only one who thinks/thought like that.

This whole thing is desperately sad. It must have been simply horrific for everyone involved.
I can only think that maybe she thought a sleepy lion doesn't look that dangerous or fast, and that as lions are big creatures, they couldn't possibly get through a car window? (Not realising that the sheer weight of them would pull the window down either?)
Like people who think that crocodiles look very big, heavy, slow and sleepy, and couldn't possibly turn in an instant into a fast-moving killer.

Publicising the event probably will save lives (I hope).
