Reclining aeroplane seats?

MrsRaegan · 05/06/2015 08:00

Flew to Spain yesterday with DS who had to sit on my lap. We were the row behind extra leg room.

Woman in front tried to recline her seat but there was literally no room for her to do so. We couldn't even put the tray down when her seat was fully upright as he had to sit on my knee.

She then ranted like a mad woman to her husband about "inconsiderate parents" I'd like to point out DS slept for most of the journey.

So AIBU to think on a 3 hour flight with a toddler on a parents knee behind you, you don't really need to recline your seat?

Boohoo. Next time, stump up for his own seat instead of being so tight

Maybe next time you could read the full thread and not be so rude? Hmm

Mrs Reagan, Im also finding it hard to understand y you were told you couldn't buy a seat.

Did you not think of asking why you couldnt?

MrsRaegan · 05/06/2015 16:36

I did weebirdie travel agent just said that infant seats weren't available on that flight.

I don't really get it either, if the person in front of me reclines it diminishes the space in front of my chest and head by what, two inches?

If I really feel I need to recoup those two inches, surely I can then recline my seat?

Weebirdie · 05/06/2015 16:48

MrsReagan I think there was a misunderstanding and perhaps the travel agent thought you meant the bulk head seat where they put the skycot.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/06/2015 16:49

I agree, SkodaLabia. It's not like the whole seat slides back, it's just a tilt of a couple or three inches, that you can get back by tilting your own seat back.

Op, did you recline your seat to buy yourself a couple more inches for your child's head? You really should have done, and no rational person would have objected.

expatinscotland · 05/06/2015 16:54

'the OP has explained that she tried to buy a seat and was refused by Thomas Cook'

Even worse, to give those twats money.

LOL, poor you, OP, everyone is just so rude! Life must be very hard, indeed.

You're on a holiday and spending it bitching online about something that happened in the past for a few hours.

Weebirdie · 05/06/2015 16:57

Jesus Expat.

Are you having a bad day because your posts are totally out of order?

MrsRaegan · 05/06/2015 17:00

Oh piss off expat holiday is fab actually and posting just now while son is napping. Problem?

OP posts:
MrsRaegan · 05/06/2015 17:01

I hardly bitched either or are you another who hasn't actually read my posts? Confused

It's bad designers that are at fault as it always causes problems. Like building houses knowing that there will be problems for householders to park just one or two inconsiderate people is all it takes. How many people would recline their car seat on a journey lasting two hours if it was ok to do so? ok overnight I can accept, but good manners are left behind when people fly. it should be everyone recline at the same time at night only.

Weebirdie · 05/06/2015 17:17

Its not the fault of the aircraft manufacturer/designer. Its the fault of the operator who decides how many seats the want in the aircraft. Some want more than others.

expatinscotland · 05/06/2015 17:39

No, no problem at all. If you want to spend your holiday grousing about the great injustice of reclining seats on aeroplanes, go right ahead.

BelindaBagwash · 05/06/2015 17:40

I've never felt the need to recline my seat. I'd imagine if the person in front does it, then you should do it and then everyone else behind you, then everyone would be annoying everyone else.

What's the point? Especially on a short flight.

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2015 17:43

honeyroar you deserve a medal, you sound very patient. My smile would be slipping if I had to deal with what you do-all those anti social people in a bad mood in a confined space. Ugh.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 05/06/2015 17:44

Ha batfish Grin - trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be! Small children and jetlag is a bad combination...

Last time I was on a 'day time flight', I'd been awake for going on 48 hours. Day time doesn't mean that people aren't in need of sleep.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2015 18:21

Expat you are being so unecessarily aggressive

Was it you on the seat in front?

Hicks123 · 05/06/2015 19:48

YANBU. Under 2's go on your lap for safety, not because she wouldn't pay for a seat. I don't think any seats should recline when there's hardly any space anyway and would never recline mine if someone was sat behind me (especially if they had a child on their lap)

Weebirdie · 05/06/2015 19:52

No Hicks thats not true. Under 2's can be in a car seat in their own seat though I think its for those 12 months and above.

Klayden · 05/06/2015 20:10

TheFairyCaravan Perhaps the person behind you is disabled too and finds that you're making them uncomfortable. I was on a daytime, shorthaul flight a few weeks ago. The man in front of me reclined the entire flight and had to be asked to sit upright for the meal, selfish git. He might have been disabled and needed the space but his actions directly caused me discomfort. Only a handful of people on the entire plane reclined and I was unlucky, I get that. Should I just stay at home because I am disabled?! It works both ways, you know. Hmm

SomewhereIBelong · 05/06/2015 20:29

anyone can recline in front of me if they wish - I have bladder problems and go the loo regularly, I also have (related) hip issues meaning I will be pushing down on their seat to stand up since I would be unable to turn and use the seat and back of my seat.

Amazing how often people who recline don't like me impinging on THEIR space.

PtolemysNeedle · 05/06/2015 20:37

It's far ruder to tug on someone else's seat to stand up then it is to use a seat the way it was designed.

HermioneWeasley · 05/06/2015 20:42

I've bought a seat for an under 2 on Thomas Cook before
