To buy a car with 60,000 miles on it?

Posting here for traffic and not sure where to put this...

Car is an Audi (automatic, diesel) from large London dealer. We can purchase 3 year warranty. 60,000 miles and 2010 model. Service history included.

Would you buy a car with this mileage?

Thanks

lottie - yes, I'm still in discussions with an insurance company re: their "book price". They need a new "book" Wink.

No, absolutely, as you say - prices do vary from place to place. If Stinkersmum is saying they don't then obviously she is wrong. I was working on the assumption, from her earlier comment, that she was talking about actual vehicle value which doesn't vary as such.

And, by value, I do mean the standard book price. Not what someone will actually pay.

OP - definitely get someone who is in the know to check the warranty, and also compare it (price / cover) with others available

SantasLittleMonkeyButler - Yes, tell me about it. If you haven't already. Search autotrader online for similar replacements as to what you want them to pay for and send the insurance company the cheapest 3, this usually helps them shimmy along slightly!

RagstheInvincible · 02/06/2015 12:10

Like a shot if the price was right. 60K miles is nothing on a modern engine. My last car had 100,000+ and was a beautiful runner.

At 12k you might be able to pick up an approved Audi from a main dealer rather than a car supermarket

I bought a Peugeot 206 from a dealer in 2012 (2004 1.4 diesel) and it had over 90,000 miles on it. It has been utterly fantastic and reliable, has passed all MOTs with flying colours as well as being really economical. Best 1,600 I ever spent!

smellyfishead · 02/06/2015 12:38

really check and get advice on the warranty- many out there are not worth the paper theyre written on!

My bf bought a AA 2yr warranty with his car from dealership, paid £250 ish for the warranty, had to take it for some work 3 months later and turns out warranty is barely worth the paper its written on-there are sooo many exclusions and little loopholes which mean there are very few bits you can actually claim for.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 02/06/2015 12:46

I was going to say check your warranty paperwork carefully too, there are lots of exclusions on some of them. I would still pay out for an inspection, if you are paying £12k for a car another £200 for an inspection is money well spent.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 12:53

SantasLittleMonkeyButler yes, I was referring to value - a cursory glance over my pp's state value in every one. Of course individual sale prices vary. But I was talking about value - and that does not differ regionally.

penisland · 02/06/2015 13:09

But I was talking about value - and that does not differ regionally.

Arguably the value of something can be defined as the amount somebody is prepared to pay for something but we're getting into semantics now.

OP there's no way I'd buy something as costly to fix and as unreliable as a diesel A6 from anywhere other than an Audi dealer with an approved used warrantly. Certainly not from a car supermarket with a Mickey Mouse warranty.

RattieofCatan · 02/06/2015 13:20

Car prices do vary by location, we buy our cars in Essex and live in Sussex, we usually buy cars over 8yrs old and I remember the last time we looked the price difference in Peugeot 206's was something like £400.

With £12k I'd want to buy something newer tbh, though I know nothing about higher value cars given that we are only just going to scrape past paying £3k for one later this year by trading in our current two cars and adding money!

19lottie82 · 02/06/2015 13:32

Rattie tbh £12k doesn't get you that much these days. And it certainly doesn't get you that much if you want what is viewed as a "premium" car, like an Audi, BMW, or Merc. Or even a higher spec Ford Focus!

Sure you can spend a few k on getting a basic run about, but that's not for everyone......

eyebags63 · 02/06/2015 13:35

TBH 12k doesn't sound excessive for a 5 year old Audi or similar 'premium' brand.

My main concern is still this after market warranty you are talking about. 99% of them are not worth the paper they are printed on.

I would try to buy an Audi approved used car if you can as manufacturer backed warranties are usually worth having.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 13:42

Good for you minty. Your point is?

RattieofCatan · 02/06/2015 13:43

I didn't say bangers were for everybody, I said that with 12k I'd want something newer. Thinking about it though I'd possibly wait a bit longer and pay a bit extra for a secondhand car from a main dealership as they're more likely to be around to cover the warranty should something go wrong than one of the car supermarket style places. And I'd want it independently checked as has already been suggested.

I may not be able to afford a car like that but I'm not going to begrudge somebody who can! Especially as I have driven various premium branded cars for work and know how nice they are to drive compared to fords and vauxhalls! If I manage to have more disposable income at any point my car would be the first thing I upgrade!

penisland · 02/06/2015 13:48

Just to add, my 12k would be going on a Lexus GS if you need something A6 sized.

ouryve · 02/06/2015 13:49

Looking at Autotrader, where you can bring up every car of a particular model listed by linked dealers, IME prices vary by dealership far more than area. Where dealers have a national presence, you can have cars shipped from one outlet to another, if you're potentially interested. I've noticed that cars at, say, Evans Halshaw might be listed for about 10-15% more than almost identical cars at SG Petch, around the corner., but less than at a Springfield garage, a couple of miles away.

Anyhow, I agree with others - check out the replacement schedule on expensive parts such a cam belts, DPF, if they're used (needed replacing according at about 80K in our old Mazda, but failed long before then and not the only one to do so - car was used daily on long journeys). And check the warranty with a fine tooth comb for potentially expensive exceptions.

ouryve · 02/06/2015 13:52

stray "according" - no idea where that came from!

0ldmum · 02/06/2015 14:19

A word of warning, please, please, look at the service history book yourself, don't take their word for it that it is all ok. We were on the point of buying a Lexus from a main dealer a few years ago, asked to look at the service book, they tried to brush us off saying it was fine, welll it had missed a main service completely! Not what you would expect from a main authorized dealer, of course they said they would still give us the main dealer warranty but that car had been running around for two years with the same oil!
