To buy a car with 60,000 miles on it?

Me2Me2 · 02/06/2015 09:57

Posting here for traffic and not sure where to put this...

Car is an Audi (automatic, diesel) from large London dealer. We can purchase 3 year warranty. 60,000 miles and 2010 model. Service history included.

Would you buy a car with this mileage?

Thanks

Do you need a diesel car?. If you do not drive lots of miles a petrol one may be better in terms of economy. 60k mileage itself is not an issue.

Any accident damage, are side panels all straight?.

Have you looked at Glass Guide or Parkers for rough idea of current value?.

Honest John is also worth a read of as well.

I would look at the terms and conditions of the 3 year warranty they are offering very carefully before signing on the bottom line. As you have been stung before I would get someone like the AA to come and give this car a thorough check before buying.

Does this car have a full service history from the main dealer?. How many owners?. Is it a fleet car?.

Stinkersmum I didn't say he was an "expert" in valuing cars, but having worked in the car industry for more than 30 years, he has quite a good idea of how these things work. Thanks for pointing out to everyone that mechanics "fix cars", not "sell them" (who would have thought it!), but I'm pretty confident, he still knows at least 10 x more about selling cars than Joe Bloggs.

You may think it's "silly", but the prices of used cars DO vary regionally. I can't force you to believe me, but that's a fact.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 11:31

No its not.

penisland · 02/06/2015 11:34

No its not

I'm afraid it really is, and really common knowledge as well.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 11:35

No its not.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/06/2015 11:36

Only once have I ever bought a car with less than 60k on the clock.

I rarely have a £12k budget though to be fair.

19lottie82 · 02/06/2015 11:36

stinkersmum can I ask what you're basing your argument on, considering everyone on here is telling you that you're wrong? And as penisland has pointed out, it is really common knowledge

BreakingDad77 · 02/06/2015 11:41

Check the model on honestjohn.co.uk its a really good website with potential problems that each model can have as well as general buying advice.

Motortrader · 02/06/2015 11:41

I bought my 12 year old Volvo 8 years ago with 100k on the clock. It's headed for 300k now. Also an automatic diesel.

Namelesswonder · 02/06/2015 11:42

I'm in Scotland, we always buy our cars in the south of England at auctions sooooo much cheaper!

Me2Me2 · 02/06/2015 11:43

If we buy 3 year warranty is it still worth getting RAC mechanic to give it once over?

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 11:43

Lottie - 'Everyone' isn't though. You are and penis is based on anecdotal evidence.

SunnyBaudelaire · 02/06/2015 11:44

and me stinkersmum! why are you just arguing the toss?

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 11:45

Yeah, nameless; the word auction is a big factor there

eyebags63 · 02/06/2015 11:45

I would rather buy a high miles non-tubro Petrol engine than Diesel. There are too many expensive parts to go wrong on a modern Diesel - the turbo, the injectors, the clutch and flywheel, various 'valves' which cost a fortune.

YANBU to buy at 60k but just be careful with the warranty. Often the warranty from smaller local dealers is basically an insurance policy to cover major failures and like most insurance policies they promise the earth but rarely deliver - so many items are excluded as 'fair wear and tear', the claim limits can be tiny and they restrict you to expensive choice of repair garage.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 11:46

Sunny you didn't even know what the average second hand price for an a6 was so forgive me for not bowing down to your knowledge.

Motortrader · 02/06/2015 11:47

"Car prices don't vary by region"

"Oh yes they do"

"No, they don't"

Is it pantomime season on MN? Smile

12k for that car at an Audi dealer is fair enough.

SunnyBaudelaire · 02/06/2015 11:47

oh god you are so dull.
I am off bye. It is stinker I feel sorry for.

19lottie82 · 02/06/2015 11:48

Stinkersmum I wouldn't call my DH's 30 years experience in the industry " anecdotal". But that aside, again, what are you basing your argument on?

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 02/06/2015 11:49

And just to add something to the regional price debate:

Price and value are different things. Stinkersmum is right that a car is not worth more in one place than another - the actual value is the same. The price however, does vary quite considerably from region to region - so in that sense lottie is right.

The price you have to pay is down to convenience & competition from other dealers. e.g. a person in Cornwall could probably buy a comparable car cheaper by travelling to Manchester - but that's hugely inconvenient so they may be prepared to pay more for the one available down the road.

Should you have the misfortune to write that car off however, the insurance company won't consider the value to be higher because you live in a remote area.

19lottie82 · 02/06/2015 11:51

OP, yes, definitely! You wouldn't buy a house without a survey, would you? Also, do you have a mechanically minded friend who can check the T's and C's of the warranty for you? Is the price of the warranty included in the 12k?

19lottie82 · 02/06/2015 11:57

SantasLittleMonkeyButler I do understand your point about price and value, but the fact is something is worth (the value) , what someone will pay for it (the selling price). And this can differ from region to region for various factors, the most common one being competition.

I got the impression from stinkersmum that she is implying that the selling price of identical cars does not differ from region to region. If I got the wrong end of the stick here, then I apologise, but if not she is wrong.

And yes, you're right re the insurance as this is a guide price, as per the Parkers "book price".

Me2Me2 · 02/06/2015 11:57

No warranty is an extra we are paying for. Dealer is Cargiant in London.

OP posts:
Shesparkles · 02/06/2015 11:58

I'd go for it, Audis hold their price well, and diesels even more so, especially with a full service history. 60k miles is a low average for the age, and on a Diesel Audi is almost just "running in"
I'd definitely check the terms of the warranty though, as others have said, they're an insurance policy which often exclude more than they cover.

If you do buy it, just be prepared for all the Audi driver haters on MN! Grin
