To be addicted to diet coke

RealHousewifeOfCroydon · 31/05/2015 14:45

I have to have 3 cans a day one at 10 one at lunch and one at 5.

I want to give up but end up drinking fruit juice with more calories.

From the NHS

Obesity, high blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are all features of metabolic syndrome, a condition associated with NAFLD. Therefore, it seems plausible that someone who consumes more sugary drinks may have other health behaviours and risk factors that contribute to NAFLD risk. Limitations in the study design and certain statistical adjustment methods mean that the work cannot prove that soft drinks alone are the cause of fatty liver

Of course it isn't good for you.

No one is arguing that it is.

Just that it isn't as bad as many make out.

CaptainAnkles · 31/05/2015 20:46

It tastes revolting. I love Coke and Cherry Coke (trying to give up both due to huge amounts of sugar) but Diet...yurrrrrghhh

peggyundercrackers · 31/05/2015 20:50

Lots and lots of food and drinks are bad for you - thing is you need to eat and drink something... One scientist says it's ok - another says it's not - who do you believe? Your stomach acid is stronger than coke and would cause more damage to rust or teeth or whatever else if you left these thing submerged in it, however the body manages to cope with it.

Some of the claims on here are hilarious and ridiculous.

specialsubject · 31/05/2015 20:52

apart from the fact the stuff is pure processed crap, it is the waste that disgusts me. So many on here opening a can, drinking a bit and then chucking it.

recycling is better than landfill - but better not to use unnecessary items in the first place.

Your teeth are exposed to stomach acid only when you vomit. Bulimics have well-documented dental issues.

Who is opening a can and drinking a bit?

I said I do that, but if you read you would see that my husband finishes it.

Apart from me I didn't read anyone say they didn't finish the can?

samsam123 · 31/05/2015 22:26

I used to drink 12 cans a day now that is addiction. Gave up but still get cravings and have to have an ice cold coke nothing else will do.

PeppermintCrayon · 01/06/2015 00:51

I used to drink loads of diet coke, then coke zero but am now loving the new coke life. It tastes weird at first but it's a grower.

DisappointedOne · 01/06/2015 00:59

Best thing I ever did was kick my diet coke addiction.

ghostspirit · 01/06/2015 01:01

i used to drink 24 cans a day...got it down to 2 liters a day....

im sure when i was drinking 24 cans it made my moods funny/odd

Bunbaker · 01/06/2015 06:09

I didn't realise Diet Coke was so addictive. It sounds scary. Do you still drink 2 litres a day ghostspirit?

I very rarely drink coke. I work in an air conditioned office and the last thing I fancy is a cold drink. Tea is my drink of choice.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 01/06/2015 08:42

I gave it up for 2 months just before Xmas, but then my sister came for two weeks and I fell off the wagon (she's a DC addict too).

I found that sparkling water was useful, as well as hot tea with lemon and splenda.

Harverina · 01/06/2015 08:44

If I have diet coke in the house I guzzle it. It is so addictive.

We only really have it at the weekend now.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 01/06/2015 08:53

Worryingly, I find myself drinking 3 cans but not even really being aware of it first thing in the morning. I have a kind of laundry ritual, I'm up before every one else usually and I drink diet coke as I pull clothes off the drying rack and fold it. Laundry = diet coke.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 01/06/2015 08:54

But honestly, my days are numbered. My dentist has been warning me for my past 2 visits, although she said my enamel looked good at last month's visit. But now one of my teeth is really sensitive, I know it's got to stop.

Longtalljosie · 01/06/2015 09:29

There's just something bloody weird about it imo. We have a party most summers and every time we forget the diet coke some of our guests start to twitch. We offer them full fat coke, juice, all sorts of other substitutes but no - nothing else will do and they invariably offer to go to the shop and get some themselves. Rather than not have that drink for one afternoon. Not normal behaviour. Obviously we now get it in for them because that's what good hosts do but - honestly, very odd indeed...

ProcessYellowC · 01/06/2015 09:36

YANBU. It is really addictive stuff, I was drinking 2L a day at university. £400 of dental work in the year I graduated means I haven't touched a drop since.

CuttedUpPear · 01/06/2015 09:37

Google "Mark Thomas Coca Cola" and decide if you can still support a company that bullies, lies, oppresses and steals to put that stuff in cans for you m

Tollygunge · 01/06/2015 09:40

I gave my hard core diet coke habit up- I experienced headaches, mood swings the lot. I don't feel hugely different for it tbh but that shit is bad for you.

prepperpig · 01/06/2015 09:41

I drink 3-4 cans a day. I am addicted and when there's none available I get an awful headache.

My first can is opened at about 8am. That's clearly not good.

DisappointedOne · 01/06/2015 10:37

It could just be an addiction to the caffeine. I gave up caffeine about 7 years ago. I can still have it occasionally, but having gone through that horrific caffeine withdrawal (lasts about 4 days) I never want to go through it again!

Harverina · 01/06/2015 10:40

I drink decaf and still could drink loads if I had it in the house!

minibmw2010 · 01/06/2015 10:47

I love diet coke, but I also drink lots of water and can go days without drinking it without issue. I can also drink it just before bed and it makes no difference to me. So maybe I'm lucky. What really annoys me is the snide comments from people. I'm an adult. I'm well educated. I'm very aware that it's not the healthiest of drinks, but you know what I will drink it if I want to, because it's my choice.

Bishopston · 01/06/2015 11:21

I am dieting currently and drink FAR MORE than 3 cans of diet coke a day. That said, I think it can assist you if you're on a calorie controlled diet - I've lost a stone in 12 days!
