To be addicted to diet coke

RealHousewifeOfCroydon · 31/05/2015 14:45

I have to have 3 cans a day one at 10 one at lunch and one at 5.

I want to give up but end up drinking fruit juice with more calories.

Pepsi Max gives me heart palpitations - I can't really cope with 'Max' caffeine.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 31/05/2015 18:28

How do people afford all this coke? Confused

20 cans a day Shock

gamerchick · 31/05/2015 18:39

Farm goods sell 3 crates for 14 quid

OldBloodCallsToOldBlood · 31/05/2015 18:48

Well, my addiction wasn't helped by DH bringing them home from work, where they were massively subsided for the staff and only cost 10p per can.

I'm pregnant now though and haven't touched Diet Coke since before I got pregnant. I stopped Pepsi Max when I found out, even though the NHS guidelines on caffeine say that five cans of cola is fine. That's a bit too much for me. I have a coffee every few days to help me go for a poo.

Topseyt · 31/05/2015 18:49

You ere obviously now aware that some people do use coke as a toilet cleaner.

It is the phosphoric acid in it which can descale and clean, so I understand. ShockGrin

I just don't actually like coke of any description. I do like the occasional strong coffee in the mornings, but have to use sugar in it, as I have never found a sweetener that doesn't make me want to heave.

Eigg · 31/05/2015 18:51

I went cold turkey (three days of withdrawal - thought I had flu) and switched to fizzy water. I am now drinking diet coke but much, much less.

Mostly my mouth seems to like the bubbles!

KindergartenKop · 31/05/2015 18:52

Maybe cut down to the tiny mixer cans?

jorahmormont · 31/05/2015 18:55

I know so many people addicted to diet coke. I don't understand it. I like Pepsi max but have maybe a can or two a week if we buy cans, otherwise I don't have any.

Whatever it is in diet coke that is addicting people can't be healthy, surely Hmm

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 18:56

I'm on 12 a day. My dentist has warned me that the end is nigh.

sherbetlemonD · 31/05/2015 18:59

I thought i'd beaten my diet coke addiction.

And then I just realised it was because I was addicted to my e cigarette instead

sigh

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 19:00

You ere obviously now aware that some people do use coke as a toilet cleaner.

You can also use vinegar or regular coke.

Sparklingbrook · 31/05/2015 19:02

I have weaned myself off fizzy drinks so a glass of ice cold full fat Pepsi is a massive treat now.

Mide7 · 31/05/2015 19:26

I think most studies about sweeteners are just crap science really and to be honest the same with sugar. It's just the latest devil. It was fat until not long ago. On my reckoning it'll be protein next.

You'll get withdrawal if you stop drinking it because of the caffeine. If you are thinking of giving it up, it's best to gradually reduce the amount.

To the people saying about its cleaning properties, yes I'm sure that's true but things like lemon juice and vinegar can be used for cleaning to. No one worries about then.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 20:18

I was pretty alarmed when I read that Pepsi had dropped aspartame. But then I spent an hour or so googling it that day and I'm pretty well convinced that there are absolutely no credible studies linking it to cancer.

Sugar is extremely bad. It is pretty "trendy" to say this, yes, but it doesn't mean it's not true.

DosDuchas · 31/05/2015 20:26

12? thats one every hour? Do you not go to work?

Sallystyle · 31/05/2015 20:29

I open around 6 cans a day. I wouldn't say I finish all 6 of them.

I got 24 for from that b&h cheap discount shop for like £2.50

My old driving instructor bought me 200 when I finally passed from a membership only place. That was really handy. I need to try to get one of those wholesalers cards Grin

Sallystyle · 31/05/2015 20:30

Oh and they have to be from cans. Pepsi max from bottles just isn't the same.

pettywitchinlondon · 31/05/2015 20:31

My grandmother drank a 2l bottle almost everyday, on the advice of her gp to get more fluids as she didn't like water or most other drinks. Apparently its fine as it has virtually nothing in so is not far off water. She died of liver cancer. Thanks NHS in the 90s.

pettywitchinlondon · 31/05/2015 20:32

Sugar has always been bad, bad fats trans have always been bad and the word fat is easy to market at the enemy.

Pure white and deadly the book was covered up by the sugar lobby.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 20:35

The way in which the body reacts to sugar is similar to the way it would react to a low-grade poison. That's not to say that no one should have sugar, because your body can manage it in small doses. In large doses over a sustained period it is ruinous.

Sallystyle · 31/05/2015 20:36

Is there any solid proof that diet drinks can cause liver cancer?

I have not been able to find much proof.

Mide7 · 31/05/2015 20:37

How does your body react to sugar?

LornaGoon · 31/05/2015 20:38

Surely anything that gives you withdrawal symptoms, like headaches that lasts for days, can't be good for youConfused

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 20:38

Nope. No peer-reviewed studies have found anything.

There was a study about brain tumours (which my husband loves to mention every time I reach for a DC), but they the conclusion was that they are of equal incidence amongst diet and regular soda drinkers. This was amongst a 70+ population.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 31/05/2015 20:40

How does your body react to sugar?

If you consume too much, your liver can't handle it and the overflow is processed by your pancreas... or something like this? and then it produces insulin? which is converted into fat immediately. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me.
