I've seen threads about an issue where the OP has been totally slated and flamed and is VVU.

A few weeks later another thread is started about the same issue and 90% of the posters agree with the OP and think she's NBU.

Is it dependent on how the first couple of posters respond, setting the tone?

I hate to say but I think a lot depends on whether the OP is 'known' and liked by many

I notice that too, Elk Grin And I love it, especially if some of the first posters have been overtly pompous and overbearing as they often come back cringing.

I did have someone once apologise to me - just straight out 'sorry, I was too harsh.'

I have a lot of respect for her as a result.

Yes, I've sometimes read a thread, totally disagreed with the first few posters but if they're being especially aggressive I mightn't have the mental energy at the time to go on and be attacked.

I think the real problem isn't so much earlier posters disagreeing, but a few earlier posters coming stomping onto the thread all guns blazing. Often over a fairly mild AIBU, as well.
