Flipping till receipts

SlightlyJaded · 26/05/2015 13:03

for every little thing.

5p for a bag - fine.

But then you get 15 reems of paper for spending 30p. WHSMith and Boots are the worst culprits - this is your receipt, this is your credit card receipt, this is a voucher, this is another voucher and this is just an extra bit of paper with some random shite on it.

I get that you need a proof of purchase for clothes, household goods, gifts, things you may need to return.

But food, newspapers, a bottle of shampoo. At my local Tesco/Sainsbury metro, the self scan checkout is always drowning in discarded receipts that have been spat out despite being unwanted

AIBU to think that receipts for these sorts of things should optional? And that vouchers can be printed on the same bit of paper.

I have nothing to worry about today and appreciate this is a petty rant, but I've just turned out my bag again and it's ridiculous.

Yanbu!

CruncherOfCrisps · 26/05/2015 13:07

Yanbu but I imagine if food items weren't added to receipts then thieves would have an easier time shoplifting as they could say they bought x item but because its a food item its not on the receipt.

Delphine31 · 26/05/2015 13:08

Yanbu! I think receipts should be provided on request only, especially in supermarkets, pharmacies, coffee shops etc.

Snozberry · 26/05/2015 13:12

YANBU there could be an option at self checkouts "would you like a receipt?" the same as at cashpoints.

ItsTricky · 26/05/2015 13:14

YANBU. This is why I love Aldi and Lidl. Just a receipt and no 'Look how much this would have cost you at Asda' crap.

Nettletheelf · 26/05/2015 13:24

I travel a lot with my job so I need receipts for expenses claims. It's a right performance trying to get one at WH Smith in stations and airports. One cashier told me that they "weren't allowed to give out receipts" (???!!!). I soon changed her mind.

I could do without the coupons they insist on giving you, though. I don't go to WH Smith because I'm avid to get a discount on a grazing snack box.

RackofPeas · 26/05/2015 13:31

Yanbu yanbu!
DH fills the car door up with his tesco receipts and if I dont turn my handbag out very regularly it gets full up with the things! Robert Dyas are the worst offenders - have a coupon for the weekend, have a pointless catalogue and please buy some crap from by the till!
Argh.

Jetgir1 · 26/05/2015 13:59

I would love to see a "do you want a receipt?" option on self service/10 items or less tills then if you are buying a loaf and some milk it saves you chucking half a tree in the bin on the way out! Cashpoints and petrol pumps ask me. No reason why a self service till can't surely? Then if you need one for expenses you have it otherwise you don't.

I often have to buy bread/marg/cake/juice for a group which I claim on expenses. Trying to find the "correct" receipt for bread if you've done other shopping as well? NIGHTMARE.

wooldonor · 26/05/2015 14:04

I don't know if this happens everywhere but at my local coop they ask if you want a receipt if you pay with cash, not sure about a card and at pay at pump petrol stations you don't need to get a receipt. I agree about WH Smiths and Sainsburys self checkouts. If you try and leave the receipts in Sansburys the assistants helpfully remind you to take them out of the machine

Topseyt · 26/05/2015 14:14

I hate them. My purse and handbag end up completely crammed with the critters.

I get that proof of purchase is necessary, but for me the problem is all of the other crap that seems to come with the receipts these days, very little of which is at all useful.

There are places where you can select whether to have a receipt or not, like pay at pump fuel stations fo instance. I always decline one at those.

Gottagetmoving · 26/05/2015 14:15

At the Sainsburys Kiosk they often ask if you need your receipt before just giving one to you.
I think its because people were leaving them on the desk or throwing them on the floor.

I hate it when shop assistants in Stores put a receipt in the bag with whatever you have bought without even asking. They just assume you will want it in the carrier bag. I like the receipt to put in my purse otherwise I often lose it.

SlightlyJaded · 26/05/2015 14:23

RackofPeas YYY TO Robert Dyas. I had forgotten the amount of paper every purchase entails. The receipt, the endless coupons for Saturday even though it's Friday and you've clearly just bought all your lightbulbs, the shit catalogue of solar powered garden lights, the 4 foot long receipt and then the credit card receipt.

"would you like a bag?"
"well actually I've just bought I light bulb so I wouldn't have needed one but now I need somewhere to put ALL THESE BITS OF PAPER"

I would love to see a 'press for receipt' button on self service check outs.

I have receipt-rage.

hashbrownnofilter · 26/05/2015 14:38

Yes to a press for receipt button!

Chunkymonkey79 · 26/05/2015 15:33

Yanbu,

boots are definitely the worst.

Bog standard receipt for purchased items is fine, shows what has been paid for incase of suggested theft.

The vouchers, and price compare, points receipt etc should be offered electronically. Would save paper and give people a choice!

MrsRossPoldark · 26/05/2015 15:47

All I need to know is:

  • what I bought, so I can prove to the rottweiler by the door that I did actually buy it;
  • how much it cost, so I know how much I spent and why my salary didn't go as far as it should have this month;
  • what the VAT rate was, in case I need to claim expenses - even then at 20% it's not hard for the Accounts Dept to work it out;
  • when I bought it, so I can get a refund if I need to and get a shift on if I've left it too long to revisit the awful retail centre I went to last time;
  • where I bought it from, so I can remember which bargain basement I went to that time

That's a minimum of 5 lines! If I buy more items, you only need to repeat the first 2 per item. Then, forget the promos; clubcard points; you have saved xx [well I didn't really cos next time I'll go elsewhere and they'll tell me the same thing about some different items, so it all works out even in the end]

Sorted?!

MidniteScribbler · 27/05/2015 00:21

Most of the supermarkets here now don't automatically give receipts for purchases under $30. The self service ones ask you if you want one, and the till operators just say 'do you want a receipt with that?'. I've also never had a petrol receipt for ages, as they don't usually print automatically either.

The ones that give me the rage are the 'let me email you the receipt'. Why, so you can have my email address to spam me with lots of useless crap? No thanks, I'm quite capable of scanning the receipt myself and saving it.

lljkk · 27/05/2015 03:38

A few yrs ago Sainsburys went from thin short to wide long receipts. Really narks me!!! I've had to return stuff, though, so prefer to get a receipt, just don't see the need for super long ones.

Cavort · 27/05/2015 05:28

Many shops have a policy of issuing receipts to try to prevent fraud by staff members, ie so the cashier can't sell something for, say, a fiver, not scan it through the till then pocket the cash themselves. By issuing receipts the shops hope the customer will notice items missing from their receipts and report it.

I agree that the number of receipts, vouchers, etc. you get in some places is getting ridiculous. One basic receipt is all any of us need.

feezap · 27/05/2015 05:34

YANBU! I hate them, I have to empty my bag every few days to chuck them out.

Boots are indeed awful, and why are the vouchers always for something you will never buy.

The worst by far is Mole Country Stores (used to be called Scats, hmmmm). Their receipts are pretty much A5 size, really long and you get two of them! The cashiers are actually embarrassed and often apologise for the small tree they are giving you for buying one small item.

Grrrr.
