Dboyfriend attempting to be helpful put the raw uncooked jacket potatoes in the fridge.

The poor misguided soul feels this is entirely normal and I am unreasonable for keeping them in the cupboard.

AIBU?

Rice???? In the freezer??????!!!!

Why?!

Stops it getting bugs :)

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2015 20:30

I've never had bugs in rice. How long are you keeping it Mokun?

LST · 24/05/2015 20:31

YABU they last 1000 times longer in the fridge. As do a lot of things.

MidnightDinosaur · 24/05/2015 20:47

YANBU

Potatoes don't belong in the fridge.

That's like putting eggs in the fridge, eggs don't belong there either.

fairy13 read this about cooked rice then keep it in your fridge www.abc.net.au/health/talkinghealth/factbuster/stories/2009/01/27/2475255.htm

Fairy13 · 24/05/2015 21:20

Oh. I keep it in the fridge once cooked. I thought everybody did that.

I had visions of dry uncooked rice being kept in the freezer.

I thought we were talking about keeping uncooked rice in the fridge/freezer.

Surely no on would leave cooked rice out at room temperature.

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2015 21:21

Cross post

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2015 21:22

Crossed post even, not cross.

CuttedUpPear · 24/05/2015 21:23

Fridge.

It's when you DON'T put them in the fridge that they go green.

sadwidow28 · 24/05/2015 21:24

Oh - crisis averted!

Yes I thought we were talking about cooked rice. So many people leave a Chinese take-away on the kitchen surface and wonder how they got food poisoning the next day when thry have re-heated it.

I batch cook rice, bag into portions and then freeze.

FryOneFatManic · 24/05/2015 21:27

I did get the impression it was uncooked rice being kept in the freezer, otherwise I keep cooked rice in the fridge if it's being used quickly, or in the freezer if I'm using it more than a day or so later.

I have a potato drawer in my fridgeGrin

formerbabe · 24/05/2015 21:54

I always keep potatoes in the fridge but recently when my fridge was full, I put them in the cupboard. I couldn't believe how quickly they sprouted...was vile. I keep all veg in the fridge now.

Oldraver · 24/05/2015 22:00

I keep mine in the fridge as it has two large vegetable/salad boxes in the bottom and I dont have any room anywhere else in the kitchen. They last for ages in there

CakeNinja · 24/05/2015 23:41

They go in the cupboard here. I presumed as they arent refrigerated when you buy them that it isn't necessary.
Probably buy a bag a fortnight and have no trouble with green or sprouting spuds.

nocoolnamesleft · 25/05/2015 00:03

Main crop in the cupboard, new potatoes (esp Jersey Royals) in the fridge.

LucyBabs · 25/05/2015 00:14

Can I derail and ask where do people keep there banana s and how long do they last? mine are becoming too ripe after a day or two. Thanks!

AnulTheMagnificent · 25/05/2015 01:40

Mine are in a potato store basket. A basket with a lip at the bottom so you can take them out and a lid on the top.

Our fridge is too cold and often things freeze in the bottom, it needs fixing, but even if it was fixed there wouldn't be room for potatoes in it.

When I lived at home they were kept in the shed, in a dark container, covered with potato sacks and newspaper, same with carrots. They were home grown and kept for ages.

Colder temperatures cause the starch to convert to sugar, they may well discolour during cooking. They need to be well ventilated. If you have ever had a rotten one undiscovered in a bag or rolled under something, you will know why.

legspinner · 25/05/2015 02:17

I'd never keep potatoes in the fridge (we keep them in a dark cupboard; the dark stops them going green, and we don't have probs with sprouting or them keeping). Even though they would keep longer in a fridge, The starch breaks down to sugars in the cold as anul and other pps have said, and cold-sweetened potatoes aren't nice.

I'd never keep bananas or tomatoes in fridge either (bananas as they discolour - tomatoes for taste!)

Fairy13 · 25/05/2015 06:15

Bananas kept next to fruit bowl. Not in fruit bowl as it makes the other fruit ripen faster.

icelollycraving · 25/05/2015 06:23

So I was right about the starch turning to sugar? I was starting to think I was remembering nonsense.

LucyBabs · 28/05/2015 00:22

Even though i keep the bananas outside the fruit bowl they still ripen too quickly..

PaperdollCartoon · 28/05/2015 00:42

Potatoes shouldn't be kept in the fridge, it's too cold and it causes the starch to turn to sugar, making them much higher carb and affects the taste and chemical make up. They should be kept in a paper bag somewhere cool but not cold.
