Dboyfriend attempting to be helpful put the raw uncooked jacket potatoes in the fridge.

The poor misguided soul feels this is entirely normal and I am unreasonable for keeping them in the cupboard.

AIBU?

Fridge for me. They last ages and it doesn't seem to impact the taste.

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/05/2015 18:29

In the cool and the dark they can last from October to May. All the non- new potatoes have been stored this way. Fridge too cold breaks down the starches.

Judydreamsofhorses · 24/05/2015 18:32

Another fridge fan here.

sadwidow28 · 24/05/2015 18:40

I have an extra small fridge in my garage to keep my potatoes, veg and soft drinks in. My potatoes were getting relegated to a cupboard far too often Grin

TapDancingMollusc · 24/05/2015 19:23

They aren't in a fridge in the supermarket...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/05/2015 19:26

Yep YABU. It lengthens the life of a potato.

Fairy13 · 24/05/2015 19:27

Shit on it.

Can I lie to him and pretend it was a unanimous YANBU vote?

This is what I love about Mumsnet. I've never considered keeping my potatoes in the fridge before, but that's where they're going right now.

clary · 24/05/2015 19:29

I keep mine in the fridge. but then I keep carrots, strawberries, grapes, tomatoes and broccoli in there too - none of which are chilled at the supermarket.

I have a huge fridge tho so there is plenty of room. They do need to be kept in the dark so a cupboard is OK I guess

clary · 24/05/2015 19:30

Should add that I try to take toms and strawbs out before they are needed as they taste much better at room temp.

crustsaway · 24/05/2015 19:31

I never have the space. Nothing wrong in putting them there though.

Fairy13 · 24/05/2015 19:31

Weirdly I keep all of those things in the fridge too, but had never considered potatoes.

Fridge stops them sprouting

SoupDragon · 24/05/2015 19:40

I agree - they last forever in the fridge. I started to keep mine in there because I have an enormous fridge and no ideal place to store potatoes elsewhere.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:40

When I lived on my own I kept lots of stuff in fridge as a. there was room and b. I didn't get through stuff so quickly so needed it to keep. Spuds were one. I still keep carrots in the fridge, and cabbage ans stuff. Spuds are in a cupboard now as bulky but they do sprout quick.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 24/05/2015 19:42

YY clary taking certain stuff out to get to room temp is a good idea when you remember!

steff13 · 24/05/2015 19:42

You aren't supposed to put potatoes in the fridge.

Here's a link to myriad articles as to why:

icelollycraving · 24/05/2015 19:43

I never do,unless they are a prepared potato side dish. I'm sure I was told at school it turns the starch to sugar. Is starch sugar? I'm thoroughly confused now!

RiceBurner · 24/05/2015 19:46

I keep mine in the fridge too OP ... when there's enough room. Otherwise in any cool, dark place.

gamerchick · 24/05/2015 19:51

Fridge here and nothing will change my mind. They last longer and you don't forget about them.

Gottagetmoving · 24/05/2015 20:01

Dark place in a paper bag. I never put them in the fridge and never will.

pigsDOfly · 24/05/2015 20:03

Well, well Fairy seems like we, with one or two others, are in a very small mn minority here. I've never kept potatoes in the fridge and never would. Just seems odd to me.

I was rather surprised a few weeks ago to see DD and her partner keep their onions in the fridge. Mind you they keep bananas in the fridge as well, which is just wrong imo. DD says that even though the skins go a funny colour it keeps them fresh.

YANBU.
I keep potatoes and onions in a basket in a cupboard, where they are fine for up to two weeks.

Two weeks?? Is that a typo? Do you mean 2 months?

I have a special vegetable drawer in my fridge which is cool but not cold where I keep my spuds. I also keep rice in the freezer though.

MrsTedCrilly · 24/05/2015 20:04

I keep all fruit and veg in the fridge, fruit especially is so much nicer and tastier! I had a small fridge once so had to keep it all in a cupboard, it went wrinkly very quickly and the taties sprouted!

Fairy13 · 24/05/2015 20:06

Rice???? In the freezer??????!!!!

Why?!
