AIBU to wish I could master the art of popularity?

Not for me especially, but for my kids, because it seems that playdates/parties etc are tied in with the parents popularity, rather than the child's.

Can popularity be learnt? Or should I just get over myself and continue with my social ineptness regardless.

How old are your children? That all changes when they get to around year 6 in my experience.

Popularity can be learnt. But yes..you need to get over yourself. If you want friends for the purpose of securing your DC more invitations anyway.

They are primary age, a few years of year 6. The invitations thing bother me because my kids are gutted when they are bypassed on invite hand outs time and time again. I think that's a good enough reason to want to be more popular, because I'm gutted for them too.
