To drink pints of beer

I don't get out often but, when I do, I like to drink pints of beer. Just one or two but it's my tipple of choice when I'm out in a pub or at an event that has a bar. At home, I drink wine. I'm 40.

I don't drink pints of beer at work do's but I did overhear colleagues talking the other day about how inappropriate it is for women to drink pints of beer. One of the these people was a woman in her 30's! I was extremely indignant but then thought that maybe there's a cut-off point beyond which it's not appropriate for women to drink pints of beer. My mother is 70 and I would be a bit Hmm if she ordered a pint of beer.

I was with you up to the point where youd judge someone else for doing what youre pissed off for being judged for. ffs. Anyone can drink whatever they like. Especially your mother.

purplemurple1 · 22/05/2015 09:19

My mil drinks them she is 82 no one has ever said anything about it to her. I think your colleges are a little strange to care.

jingscrivvens · 22/05/2015 09:20

Bah, I'm on my way to 40 and love a pint of beer. It's what I drink at home or out with my friends, but would not drink when on a works night out.

And I'm not planning to stop it any time soon, my Mum sighs but she's not going to stop me. Maybe when I'm in my 60s I'll start on the halfs..

beansagain · 22/05/2015 09:24

I fully accept that I am a hypocrite complex human being and shouldn't judge others more harshly than I expect to be judged myself. I'm just being honest though.

Only idiots would judge women on what they deem to be an 'inappropriate' drink.
Hth

GiddyOnZackHunt · 22/05/2015 09:25

Good beer is lovely. Half a pint is pointless. Unless you're trying every beer in a good pub.

PacificDogwood · 22/05/2015 09:26

YABU to like bear at all Wink

YANBU about the whole pint thing - I like pints of Strongbow, so shoot me. I am 49, a professional woman, mother of 4.

It's one of those strange, faintly misogynistic 'rules' that can just get lost IMO.

BadLad · 22/05/2015 09:27

Drinking pints is not ladylike.

Seriously, just drink what the hell you like. You're an adult - anyone who disapproves is being ridiculous. Same applies to your mother.

mommy2ash · 22/05/2015 09:27

My mum orders a pint of beer but with an empty half pint glass to pour it into apparently that's more ladylike lol

LurcioAgain · 22/05/2015 09:35

They are odd.

But I have a good story for you. Many years back I was in a renowned real ale pub in the Yorkshire Dales with a group of friends and my then boyfriend who liked lager (is that a chorus of "LTB" I hear? Grin )

I went to the bar and ordered 3 pints of beer and a pint of lager. The landlord looked at me with utter disdain, rummaged around under the counter for a moment and produced a "stemmed glass for a ladee" which he proceeded to pour the lager into. I took great delight in carrying this monstrosity over to my boyfriend.

madreloco · 22/05/2015 09:38

Then you cant complain about your collegues being honest too then, can you?

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 22/05/2015 09:39

You'd judge other women for drinking pints? Don't be a dick.

Enb76 · 22/05/2015 09:41

I like beer and would choose it over wine. I was most incensed when, at 18, a boyfriend's father bought me a drink and it turned out to be half a shandy - pretty sure I asked for a pint of IPA.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 22/05/2015 09:41

I had no idea this was a thing. Sounds like a cunning plan by your colleagues to get cheaper rounds to me, if you're only allowed half the amount!

Lolamon · 22/05/2015 09:42

I'm 25 mum of two and have pints of ipa at the pub lovely stuff on a summers day!

Honestly who gives a feck what people do or do not drink

YouTheCat · 22/05/2015 09:48

OP didn't say she'd judge other people for drinking beer, just her own mother. I'm presuming having a pint would be out of character for her in this instance.

Many, many years ago 25 years ago , when I liked a pint of Guinness or Exhibition, I'd get a pint and the landlord would give me a half pint glass to drink it from so I didn't get lipstick on his grubby pint glass. I didn't use it.

I still like a pint but haven't come across this attitude in years. I never drink halves. If I want a drink, I have a pint. If I'm not fussed, I have a coke.

Bunbaker · 22/05/2015 09:51

I have drunk pints of Pimms at Henley regatta before Grin

Does that count?

SecondMrsAshwell · 22/05/2015 09:53

The reason I drink pints of beer when I'm out is that I have had too many occasions when I've had a large red with each round and have wound up so piscillated I have had no idea how I got home. At least with beer, I'm merry, but capable of getting off the bus at the right stop.

TapDancingMollusc · 22/05/2015 09:57

On holiday in Dorset a few years ago, I ordered 2 pints of beer. The barmaid looked at my OH and said, "pint and a half was it?"

Hmm
ApprenticeViper · 22/05/2015 09:57

I think YABU for judging your mother if she wanted a pint of beer, but YANBU for drinking whatever the hell you want.

I drink pints of cider, because I don't like beer, but I have been known to over indulge by having pints of wine. Oh, the hangover

MyCatIsAGit · 22/05/2015 09:59

I drink pints of beer, real ale, I loves it.

samG76 · 22/05/2015 10:00

liked the Yorkshire Dales story - reminded me (also in the light of the same sex marriage cake) of the hikers who enter a remote pub in the Dales, and order a pint of bitter, a pint of lager and 2 packets of crisps. 5 minutes later minutes later the barman comes back with only one glass, saying "Here's your bitter - we're not a restaurant and we don't serve gays...."

Bunbaker · 22/05/2015 10:04

Many, many years ago I left my job in London because I was moving "oop norf". My drink of choice at the time was port and lemonade (I know). People bought me so many drinks I couldn't hold them all so I asked for a pint glass and poured them all into it. I think I had two pints of port and lemonade - not a great idea.

SaucyJack · 22/05/2015 10:05

Pint of Stowford for me, ta.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 22/05/2015 10:06

Do you work in the 1950s OP? Are there still people who think there are drinks that are for men/women Shock Hmm
