To drink pints of beer

I don't get out often but, when I do, I like to drink pints of beer. Just one or two but it's my tipple of choice when I'm out in a pub or at an event that has a bar. At home, I drink wine. I'm 40.

I don't drink pints of beer at work do's but I did overhear colleagues talking the other day about how inappropriate it is for women to drink pints of beer. One of the these people was a woman in her 30's! I was extremely indignant but then thought that maybe there's a cut-off point beyond which it's not appropriate for women to drink pints of beer. My mother is 70 and I would be a bit Hmm if she ordered a pint of beer.

I can't believe how many of you are saying you drink pints of beer but wouldn't do it on a work do. Why not?

BeautyQueenFromMars · 22/05/2015 10:14

Mmm pints of beer. I tend to go for beer more than any other drink. And I do love a good pint of real ale or bitter.

LapsedTwentysomething · 22/05/2015 10:16

I like a decent golden ale in a handle glass, me. Tbh or shows on my waistline.

Perissa · 22/05/2015 10:17

There are still places where this is a thing. My mum's best friend is from the Newcastle area and the working mens club in the little town will not serve a pint to a woman. They will pour 2 half pints!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/05/2015 10:19

mmmm beer.

loveareadingthanks · 22/05/2015 10:21

I don't like beer but a pint of cider is my favourite drink.

I used to get a few funny reactions when I was young, back in the 80s it was a bit more unusual, but I've only had positive responses now when people bother to comment.

Quite often I'll have a pint and DP will have a glass of wine if there's no beers that meet his real-ale snob approval.

YouTheCat · 22/05/2015 10:30

Perissa, this is why working men's clubs are in decline. They haven't moved with the times.

ApprenticeViper · 22/05/2015 10:31

It is pretty incredible how invested some people are in what other people drink, and/or what they drink it out of. It's 2015 FFS!

I used to work at a semi-posh golf club, and when there was a members' function (i.e. wives and partners invited), one of the members would begrudgingly "allow" his wife to have a pint of cider, but it had to be served in two half pint glasses. Until we got some of the Stella Artois pint chalices, then she was allowed a full pint all in one go, served in one of those. Ridiculous state of affairs.

loveareadingthanks · 22/05/2015 10:33

I drink pints at the working men's club.

beansagain · 22/05/2015 10:34

I wouldn't drink pints of beer at a work do because of fear of being judged. I work in a law firm. It's white wine and therefore a huge hangover for me at work do's.

PS. Off-topic but I'm sure this apostrophe is wrong in 'work do's'. I'm pretty good on grammar but really don't know what's the plural of 'work do' so have gone with the apostrophe. I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm BU Wink.

'one of the members would begrudgingly "allow" his wife to have a pint of cider'

why didn't she tell him to fuck off?

2rebecca · 22/05/2015 10:37

I drink pints if I want. I don't care if other people think it's "unladylike". Men can have a glass of Babycham if they want.

Kurololi · 22/05/2015 10:40

My friend was not allowed to drink beer at a works do at one of Marco Pierre White's restaurants as there was wine provided for the ladies and bottles of beer provided for the men. My friend hates wine and got into quite an argument with a waiter and then eventually the manager - who all stuck to their guns and denied her a bottle of beer that most of the men were drinking. Craziness in the 21st century.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 22/05/2015 10:42

Half pint glass, gone in 3 guzzles! Most pointless thing ever.

It gets drunk straight from the can at home Grin and yes I do wash the top of the can first before I open it!

BabyGanoush · 22/05/2015 10:42

is this a country-city thing?

I go out for a drink with my friends in the village, all 40s, quite a few of them like a pint.

MIL (72) and I had a pint of cider in country pub last week.

I would also happily have a pint at a work do. Never been criticised for it.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 22/05/2015 10:47

How is this allowed? Perhaps some of the men at Kurolilis friends MPW restaurant wanted wine? Would a man have been allowed wine?

Obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the friend would have been within her rights to stand on a chair, gain the attention of the entire room, and ask if there are any men present who would like to swap their beer ration for her wine, because the sexist arse of a venue were so stuck on protocol that they were refusing to serve a customer her preferred drink.

I drink all different things depending on how I feel. Sometimes I want a pint of beer, sometimes I want a glass of wine, or a G&T. Sometimes I even want a whisky & ginger, but what I don't want is other people deciding what I can have, based on my gender alone.

Massiveaggressive · 22/05/2015 10:47

It can work the other way though. Many moons ago at a beer festival there was a potent beer called Crippledick which would only (there were large signs) be served as a half. The beer glasses were all pints and on ordering for me and two male friends I received a full pint and two halves in the pint class, the barman explained I clearly didn't have a dick to cripple.

19lottie82 · 22/05/2015 10:52

yum, I love a pint of nice lager. ideally heinekan. mmm

loveareadingthanks · 22/05/2015 11:02

The only downside of drinking pints is having to pee all evening.

mindthegap79 · 22/05/2015 11:05

I drink pints. I'm northern but live in the south west. It's cider heaven, although I also like a nice pint of real ale. Why would I want to wait at the bar twice as often just to pay more? Madness.

When I was a student I worked behind a bar at an ABBA tribute night at a football stadium. A man ordered a half pint but asked if I could pour it into a pint glass for him, presumably so he would look all hardcore Grin

WhizzPopBang · 22/05/2015 11:10

My mum drinks pints and she's in her 70s. She judges anyone who doesn't drink pints as not being a "proper person"!

leedy · 22/05/2015 11:18

When I was in college I had a colleague in a part-time job (same age as me) who declared that he didn't think it was very "ladylike" for women to drink pints. I was holding a full pint of Guinness at the time and (for the first and only time in my life) downed it in one. I had hiccups for the rest of the night but it was worth it for the look on his face.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 22/05/2015 11:20

You'd judge other women for drinking pints? Don't be a dick.

Great Contribution Ehric, got any more insights we need to hear??

I know it was considered "unladylike" many years ago, thought that sort of died out in the 80's though.....

Yokohamajojo · 22/05/2015 11:25

I am like you 40, drink red wine at home (or if sunny a can of beer straight from the can) but pints when out! I am very lady like! Smile seriously I couldn't care less if people think I am wrong to drink pints, I like lager and half a pint is just too small

flannelwash · 22/05/2015 11:29

I couldn't give a flying fig what a lady orders at the bar, it's 2015 drink whatever the hell you like!
Even though beer tastes like yaks piss and makes me bloat to the size of a walrus
