To drink pints of beer

I don't get out often but, when I do, I like to drink pints of beer. Just one or two but it's my tipple of choice when I'm out in a pub or at an event that has a bar. At home, I drink wine. I'm 40.

I don't drink pints of beer at work do's but I did overhear colleagues talking the other day about how inappropriate it is for women to drink pints of beer. One of the these people was a woman in her 30's! I was extremely indignant but then thought that maybe there's a cut-off point beyond which it's not appropriate for women to drink pints of beer. My mother is 70 and I would be a bit Hmm if she ordered a pint of beer.

Beer is my drink of choice & I'm a 28 year old woman so god knows what your colleagues would think of me. Sod them, drink what you want!

I was half expecting to see the gendered meals thing in action on holiday in Spain last week, but no, the waiter obviously remembered who ordered what and DP got his tuna salad and I got my meatballs.

Compos With chicken, it might depend what the other meal is - chicken and steak - steak for the man, chicken for the lady.

Chicken and fish or vegetarian food - chicken for the man, fish or vegetarian for the lady.

You will obviously be aware that male vegetarians are to be regarded with suspicion or curiosity, especially if it is due to their own free will, rather than to comply with the preferences of their DW Grin.

My mum apparently caused a minor scandal in my dad's family's local in Dublin in the 60s by ordering a pint of Guinness. They had apparently never seen the like.

Fuckup · 22/05/2015 13:59

They can bore off. yanbu. pints are fine no matter what gender or age. At home I drink lager from the can, and have been known to drink them in public and on the train [shoc so they can suck on them apples Wink

ComposHatComesBack · 22/05/2015 14:01

ilkley I am now fascinated by what combinations of orders could end up in front of who.

Chicken is seemingly gender fluid food.

LadyCassandra · 22/05/2015 14:03

Oh bollocks, wrong thread! :o

loveareadingthanks · 22/05/2015 14:27

formerbabe

...but why would you feel embarrassed? I'm not having a dig, I just honestly don't understand, and would love an insight into this mindset.

PacificDogwood · 22/05/2015 14:45

Social conditioning is a powerful thing - it's quite scary IMO.

I would actually feel really manly holding a pint...If we go out as a couple and my dh asks me to hold his pint while he goes to the loo, I feel embarrassed that people will think its mine. It is silly really.

Crinkle77 · 22/05/2015 14:50

They ABU. Go ahead and drink your pints of beer. Your colleagues are being ridiculous.

flora717 · 22/05/2015 14:55

I'm a CAMRA member. I do love beer (and many other drinks). I first became aware that drinking pints as a woman might draw comment mid 20's. But I've always ignored comments and corrected deaf bar staff.

Almostfifty · 22/05/2015 14:55

Perissa I drink pints. I am from Newcastle. I drank pints in the eighties in working mens clubs in Newcastle.

I doubt they've changed the other way since then.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 22/05/2015 14:56

I like a decent golden ale in a handle glass, me.

Me too, I think it (any ale) tastes better.Grin

grimbletart · 22/05/2015 14:58

I'm in my 70s and when I fancy a beer I always have a pint. Always drank a pint when I was 20 as well. Never had a problem. Perhaps it was the withering stare I used to give the barman if he raised his eyebrows at me. An unspoken "really, you and whose army?" to any raised eyebrow did the trick. Grin

Incidentally, I'm sure you all know but real beer drinkers (think local rugby club) always used to drink halves 'cos that way you end up drinking more as a couple of swallows half emptied it and it was then always being topped up.

Not sure if that is still true though…….

IrianofWay · 22/05/2015 15:12

Now I want a pint...

pearpotter · 22/05/2015 15:17

Can't believe this attitude still exists. I always drank pints. When I was 20 (so nearly 20 years ago) a middle-aged man said to me, as I was drinking a pint "Men won't find you attractive if you drink pints of beer." I was astonished - I think I just said something like "Ha - I don't care!"

AlwaysAFool · 22/05/2015 15:30

Any drink at any age above 18 ofcourse.

I have drank beer since 18 and have never had any problems ordering a pint for myself.
I have only one experience of it being commented and that was a friend who was like oooh go you Smile.
Doubt the other people who where there approved as I get the impression I bring thier appearance down in class But who gives a fig.
No me.

HellKitty · 22/05/2015 15:33

I haven't RTFT but for FUCKS sake! I love a pint of lager when I'm out. I hate getting Peroni in the proper glasses though, too tall and skinny and I knock them over. If you ever find Blue Moon on draft (wheat beer) it's amazing.

40s and no beer belly - yet.

OnlyLovers · 22/05/2015 15:37

Sorry, you lost me when you said you'd judge on the grounds of age; it doesn't make it any better that you're 'just being honest though.'

NKfell · 22/05/2015 15:39

When DP and I order a pint of lager and an orange juice... the pint is for me.

vienna1981 · 22/05/2015 15:46

We had a similar thread to this a few months ago.

It incenses me that offensive, outdated and downright chauvinist attitudes persist today. Those people in those dark isolated pockets can knob off with their backward nonsense. Drink what you like folks, but can I just say, ladies with a pint of ale are especially welcomeSmile .

Amusingly enough, a middle-aged couple go to my local about the same time most nights. He always has pints of John Smith's smooth(yuck), she always has halves of any number of guest ales. And SHE always goes to the bar while he sits on his fat arseAngry .

loveareadingthanks · 22/05/2015 16:12

I do think it is still unusual in some social groups, so perhaps that's it formerbabe - in your groups women don't drink pints?

They don't in some of my social groups now either, I just don't give a fuck, (not saying you have to give a fuck) but I have noticed it before this thread, in a 'that's odd' way, as it's not what I'm used to. Different sort of people/environment to the ones I've had in the past. They probably think I'm a bit odd for drinking pints.

I'll have to ask DP what he thinks (as these new groups are via him) - did he think it was odd when he met me, did he not care, or did he like it?
