to think that this outfit wouldn't be something that a "bunny girl" or "stripper" would wear.

Please be honest - because I have no desire to send dd to school dressed as either...

Tomorrow, dd's school has a dress-up day where all the kids are to dress smartly. DD, who doesn't do dresses, asked me if she could wear black leggings, white shirt and a bowtie.

Therefore, the outfit she is planning to wear is a new, long-sleeved white school shirt, a black bowtie and some normal black full-length leggings. She'll wear them with black, sensible, boots. She may wear a small adult size grey waistcoat that I bought from a charity shop today, providing it doesn't swamp her when she tries it on.

She described the outfit to her dad (my exH) on the phone last night, and he has sent me an email saying that he feels this is what bunny girls/strippers would wear and is therefore inappropriate.

I'm rather bemused, as it didn't occur to me for one second - and I still think that he is perhaps taking a somewhat unusual view on this...

Please could I have objective opinions - if you saw an 8 year old girl dressed in an outfit like this, would it make you think she was dressed inappropriately?

Thanks for your honest feedback.

Probably not but hard to judge without seeing the outfit

Minisoksmakehardwork · 21/05/2015 13:00

Could you make a top hat and magicians wand to go with it? To define it as a magicians outfit.

It does sound a bit bunny girl but only if it were to have ears. Otherwise it's what I'd expect a magicians assistant or female magician to wear.

ApprenticeViper · 21/05/2015 13:01

Say whaaaaaaaat?!?!?! YADNBU. The outfit sounds absolutely fine. Did you hear your DD describe the outfit to her dad, and was it exactly as you've described it here? If so, I'd be asking him which strip clubs he's been frequenting, as he is being mercilessly ripped off! Grin

steppemum · 21/05/2015 13:02

my dd doesn't do dresses either and she would be happy in something like this.

I think that the outfit could look bunny girlish if the leggings were very tight and the shirt very short/fitted. It doesn't sound like either so no.

OfaFrenchMind · 21/05/2015 13:02

Maybe it's the leggings? With some black slacks, it should be very smart!.
The rest sounds fine!

GailLondon · 21/05/2015 13:03

Sounds like she will be completely covered up with no legs, chest or even arms on display so I can't see any problem at all!

worldgonecrazy · 21/05/2015 13:03

If I saw a grown woman in the outfit you describe, I wouldn't think "bunny girl" or "stripper", nevermind an 8 year old.

Jackie0 · 21/05/2015 13:04

It sounds grand.
Make sure the shirt covers her bum

diploddycus · 21/05/2015 13:04

No, I don't think it would be inappropriate although a long shirt and leggings could look like a short dress and tights which is a bit more inappropriate. It's hard to judge without seeing the outfit. If you're comfortable and your daughter is comfortable then I think your ex is being silly.

Collaborate · 21/05/2015 13:05

Sounds smart apart from the leggings, which are hardly synonymous with smart.

RightSideOfWrong · 21/05/2015 13:05

How long is the shirt? And are the leggings more like trousers or tights?

I mean, on me, I'd look like a stripper. But I'm 24, and busty, and I can't really pull off the whole shirt-and-leggings thing without looking like I forgot my skirt.

I'm guessing that if you're happy with it, it's likely to be fine. If he's that bothered, he's presumably welcome to find her some black trousers or another outfit that she's happy to wear tonight?

Gottagetmoving · 21/05/2015 13:07

Bunny Girls never wore white shirts or leggings,..It was a basque which pushed their books up and out and sheer stockings/tights. I doubt strippers would wear the outfit you describe either.
Sounds like your DD will be covered from neck to toe...How can that be inappropriate?

Gottagetmoving · 21/05/2015 13:08

Boobs!!! Not Books!

Egged · 21/05/2015 13:10

It sounds slightly odd as an outfit, though certainly not anything that would make me think of a Playboy bunny - is there a theme to the dressing up day, other than 'smart' that I'm not grasping?

ScorpioMermaid · 21/05/2015 13:13

it doesn't sound inapropriate at all OP. I'd send him a pic of her wearing the outfit and ask him where he's been going to see bunny girls dressed like this! I'd be fine with my 13 year old with her ever growing curves wearing something like this and the same goes for my 7 year old!

slicedfinger · 21/05/2015 13:13

Unless she has a tail sewn on her leggings, I think he must have been sniffing tipex or something. A very odd suggestion!

Snozberry · 21/05/2015 13:14

No I wouldn't think an 8 year old in a long sleeved school shirt and leggings looked like a stripper. That is bizarre. Does she have smarter trousers?

Aquabat · 21/05/2015 13:14

This is the outfit. I see what some of you mean about the leggings, and I guess they are tight, but dd lives in leggings most of the time, which her father has never commented on, so it didn't strike me as particularly out of the ordinary. If the waistcoat doesn't swamp her, then I guess that would cover her bum. I did actually try to get black trousers instead of leggings yesterday, but there were no black trousers - or indeed smart trousers at all - at the local shops, which is why I resorted to leggings. I really don't have time to get a bus into town to buy black trousers for a dress up day.

Maybe I'll email him a picture of the outfit and say if he's concerned, maybe he could pick her up a pair of less "fitted" black trousers tonight...

The theme to the day is "English high tea"

OP posts:
Floggingmolly · 21/05/2015 13:15

What's the theme? If they usually wear school uniform, being told to "dress smartly" would kind of imply it's for a special occasion, not just own clothes day.
Leggings and bowtie wouldn't pass the smart test for me.

Theycallmemellowjello · 21/05/2015 13:19

I think the outfit is great! Very smart. I think it's actually pretty strange that such a thought crossed his mind tbh - what on earth can women wear if a long sleeved shirt and leggings are too sexy.

Lemondrizzletwunt · 21/05/2015 13:20

Awesome idea, and her Dad is a prat.

Maybe add in a monocle for high tea!

chocmeup · 21/05/2015 13:21

It looks fine. If she was 13 he might have a tiny iota of a point though still debatable. But she isn't and it sounds like he is either an idiot or being deliberately antagonistic. Or both.

Pantone363 · 21/05/2015 13:22
Hmm

It sounds fine. A female version of a mans tuxedo really.

Stripper/bunny girl Hmm er no. My mates a stripper, I doubt she'd make much money in leggings, a shirt and flat black boots.
