AIBU?

to have all my hair chopped off?

I'm not feeling the aging windswept hippy look any more. I'm 40 and haven't had it cut for about 3 years.

It is currently below waist, thick and straight as a yard of pump water. I think I'm going a bit bald at the front. Would that be from pulling it into a bun/plait all the time? It's thin and fuzzy there.

Appointment is at 2pm.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

Go for it!

I went from waist length to long bob with layers 18 months ago. My 7 year old did the same. In fact, she wanted to do it first, then someone suggested donating her hair, and I thought if she was brave and generous enough to do that, I'd do the same to support her. We donated our hair and got people to sponsor us too. She's kept hers above the shoulder, and mine has grown most of the way back now. I prefer it long, but would do the same again in future. It grows back!

Go for it Hooked. You could always start with shoulder or chin length & then go shorter later on?

I used to have waist length hair & had it cropped about 10 years ago. It took a bit of getting used to but it was lovely and cool in the summer and a lot easier to style/care for. About 3 years ago I decided I wanted it long again and it's nearly back to its former length now.

Also I seem to remember hearing somewhere that having it cut encourages it to grow or is that an old wives tale?

I went from mid back length to short girly cut - just barely covering my ears. My hair is thick, so it was all cute and curly after cutting.
It's growing back now. Just below shoulder blades at the moment.
The plaits I sold to hairdresser in my home country for 20€. Got my money back effectively. Wink

Definitely YANBU.

Before you decide please please look at the Little Princesses Trust website. They take donated hair to make wigs for children who have lost theirs through illness or cancer treatment.
Yours would be perfect! I am going to donate mine as soon as it is long enough, have about another inch to grow to make their minimum required length of seven inches. Better than leaving it as sweepings on the salon floor!

I did the same as Daryl . Had 16 inches cut of 2 years ago and donated to The Little Little Princess Trust (they make wigs for children with hair loss).

Just have it plaited (DRY) before the first chop and take a plastic bag with you to put it in.

Ooh. It is plenty long enough.

Ooh how exciting - it will change your life! I always think shorter hair looks younger, once mine gets past shoulder length it adds about 10 years.

On the thinning front, have you had your thyroid checked or started any new contraception etc? Any hormonal imbalance can make your hair thinner.

Word of warning though, if you're a 'bun and go' sort of girl, you will probably have to spend a little longer styling your short hair. But on the plus side it is soooo quick to dry.

Ah shite. Had mirena 6 months ago. Have just about decided to keep it (alternative being scary hysterectomy). Damn.

If it is any consolation, I had Mirena for six years (did a brilliant job) and it didn't affect my hair at all.

Ghast you also look much younger!

Right. Going to chop off the long bits and think about the bald bits later.

Ghast it looks lovely, you look so trendy and stylish! You have a really modern style too. Lots of people get pixie cuts and don't do anything with it so they look like men, or have too much weight on them so look unbalanced.

go for it, I'm 44 and I'm having my shoulder length hair chopped off tomorrow, my sil had hers cropped last year and looked amazing, took years off her, unfortunately her dh hated it and made her grow it out.Hmm its only hair!

I'm sure being cut encourages growth ZombieJenna, mine has grown about an inch and a half in the 9 weeks since my cut! Shock

And yy short hair probably forces you to style it more, I chose that option on purpose to drag myself out of a ponytail rut! Grin

Thought as much Hooked. I have a friend who has just given up with Mirena due to terrible side effects, including massive hair loss.

I'm sure the new do will help though and maybe once it settles down a bit the hair growth will come back.

Looking forward to 'after' photos!
