but which son it is is normally irrelevant

SoupDragon · 18/05/2015 14:08

In which case, DS is still shorter than "son"

Stinkersmum · 18/05/2015 14:16

YANBU. In fact, if you're older than 15 I'd judge you for not hating it.

pictish · 18/05/2015 14:53

I love the evolution of language and all the slang terms we know so well.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/05/2015 14:54

So is it pronounced as bay or bay-ee?

Penguinsaresmall · 18/05/2015 14:56

I've never heard of it before - so how old does that make me? Grin

Theycallmemellowjello · 18/05/2015 15:11

@cigarsofthepharoah - I came on to same precisely the same thing. It's like when people sneer at made-up names for being "trashy." Really uncomfortable when they are characteristic of a group that suffers so much racism.

Maybe stop and wonder why the name Charlotte and the blandishment darling seem so much "classier" than the name Latonquay and the blandishment bae.

It couldn't be because the former two are associated with the group that has held economic and cultural power for the last two centuries and the latter are associated with a group who have been economically, socially and culturally disenfranchised over the same period could it?? And naturally criticising the latter two as being somehow inherently bad couldn't possibly be contributing to the climate of discrimination which that disadvantaged group suffers from... Of course not. It's that bae is a "stupid" word. Definitely that.

enderwoman · 18/05/2015 16:27

Bae is pronounced bay.

VixxFace · 18/05/2015 17:44

I haven't seen THOT mentioned on mumsnet yet.

MitzyLeFrouf · 18/05/2015 17:58

What's THOT and more importantly when did I become so out of touch? Harumph.

VixxFace · 18/05/2015 18:01

It means

That hoe over there

I hate it. For example "Jane is a thot" " your friend is a thot"

belgina · 18/05/2015 18:40

Never heard it before and as a native Dutch speaker, the "poo" meaning is a new one to me too!

Seeingthebeautyineveryminute · 18/05/2015 18:44

Bae (or bey) is definitely a west wales thing. "Alright bey" a term of endearment

Gralick · 18/05/2015 18:49

I quite like "illy bae" Grin But I'd never heard of it, thot, squad goals, viners or thug life until this very thread.

Old and proud.

mynameisvivienne · 18/05/2015 18:54

Bae has been around ages.

As has fleek, or nah, side chick, thot, thirsty (as in desperate)

It confuses me that it's being discussed now Confused

Vine is hilarious.

Cocolepew · 18/05/2015 19:06

Its all bae, fleek, on point and squad goals in this house (13 yo Hmm)

warmfuzzyfeeling · 18/05/2015 19:42

What is LTB?!

Dammit I thought I was up to speed.

Anniegetyourgun · 18/05/2015 19:48

What is LTB?!

Clearly you don't hang out on the Relationships board.

Vickisuli · 18/05/2015 22:34

I am so out of touch, I had no idea any of these expressions existed. (I'm really not THAT old....am I?) My kids are only 4,6 and 8, maybe I will know more teenage slang when they are teenagers? Please tell me I will.

BadgersArse · 18/05/2015 22:35

you will

Mamiof3 · 18/05/2015 22:47

My dd screeched 'omg SQUAD SQUAD SQUAD' when watching taylor swifts new video today. She also says 'hannah is bae' or 'katelyn brought haribo in today, BAE!'

She gets it from Vine

CallieG · 19/05/2015 01:48

I hate it , it is ridiculous, that is how toddlers just learning to talk say baby, It actually means SHIT in Danish, so if someone calls you bae they are calling you a turd, there is also the acronym B.A.E which in restaurant speak means bacon and eggs.

RocknRollNerd · 19/05/2015 09:28

It actually means SHIT in Danish, so if someone calls you bae they are calling you a turd

They are not calling you a turd unless you both speak Danish and are using it in that context. The same way that when I light up a fag I'm not actually setting fire to an American gay man and when my German friend offers me a biscuit she's offering me a cookie and not some trousers/underpants to go with my coffee.

wowfudge · 19/05/2015 09:34

'Go Get It Bae' is the Pharrell song played in the latest M&S TV advert. We shazamed it - first time I'd heard the word.
