Bloody love that stuff, for everything. That white cream stuff isn't good for anythingConfused

Ignore that, I'm wrong.

ComeLuckyApril · 17/05/2015 21:46

It's not the same sulks It's all greasy, cream instead of ointment!

motleymop · 17/05/2015 21:50

Yes it might be a bit thinner, that is true. But I've been using it and it still works its magic

Redlocks28 · 17/05/2015 21:50

One has zinc oxide in and the other doesn't.

It must have been discontinued for a reason??

motleymop · 17/05/2015 21:51

ah yes, no zinc. forgive me!

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 21:54

I have a tube of germolene in my cupboard. I can't tell if it's white or pink Confused. It's kind of white with a pink tinge but the dry bits near the lid are pink, iyswim. It's definitely white on skin though and it definitely has anaesthetic in it.

The smell of root beer reminds me of germolene!

Redlocks28 · 17/05/2015 21:56

They both have anaesthetic in. The ointment is discontinued and the cream is still for sale.

InQuiteAPickle · 17/05/2015 21:56

I've just checked and mine doesn't have any zinc oxide in it.

Redlocks28 · 17/05/2015 22:00

Presumably it says 'cream' on it then?

Fozzleyplum · 17/05/2015 22:07

That's appalling. Thank Heavens you can still buy Zam-Buk.

Redlocks28 · 17/05/2015 22:13

What's Zam-Buk!?

thewigglywig · 17/05/2015 22:21

The white stuff is not the same. There's some ingredient that's been banned, or become hard to get or something so the formula is different. The white stuff is creamy, not ointmenty, and has a fraction of the magic healing powers. Still smells though. I have trawled chemists for a last tube (a tin would be better, obvs), but no, my wounds will have to weep, unhealed ..... Sad

Redlocks - This is Zam-Buk

My DM would probably have used it to mend a broken limb. Smells amazing.

Redlocks28 · 17/05/2015 23:20

What would you use it for? Is it good stuff?!

hiddenhome · 17/05/2015 23:25

Yuk, dh insists on dabbing this vile concoction on any sore bits any of us have Hmm

Before you can say "ouch", he's whipped the tube out and got you. The sore ends up sticky, inflamed and infected.

It doesn't work.

He's also fond of Savlon if he can't locate the Germolene.

Savlon doesn't work either.

Fozzleyplum · 17/05/2015 23:46

You can use Zam-Buk for anything you'd use Germolene on, plus bites and eczema. It's a very old formula and it's dark green!

Chchchchangeabout · 17/05/2015 23:59

You can apparently still get pale pink?

Pipbin · 18/05/2015 00:08

Look, pink stuff fixes things, fact.
Pink germolene for cuts and scrapes (but only from a tin).
Pink medicine for all other ailments.
See, you can't argue with that.
All they carry in ambulances is pink cream, pink medicine or, if it's really serious, a blue paper towel.

BeaLola · 18/05/2015 00:13

Tyrozets mentioned up thread ... My Dad swears by these. If I ever dare mention that I have a sore throat or am feeling a bit under the weather he straight away asks if I've started using my tyrozets and if I say no he starts waxing lyrical about them and how they will work etc etc. it always makes me think of the Dad in that film My Big Fat Greek Wedding who sprays the cleaner stuff at everything.

Little tin of Germolene was always in my parents bathroom cabinet One of the smells of my childhood along with Galloway cough syrup.

And the blue pot of Nivea cream that sat on my mums dressing table.

Pengweng · 18/05/2015 08:09

I'm actually really sad about this. I love the smell, reminds me of my nana. I'm sure i've got a tube upstairs in the first aid kit off to give it a sniff

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/05/2015 08:54

Does no-one remember Zinc ointment, Yellow Basilicon ointment and Zubes? Grin [old]

Zinc was like Germolene, can't remember what the yellow stuff was for, possibly boils? And Zubes cleared your tubes. Obviously.

WellTidy · 18/05/2015 09:06

OMG. I cannot find any stock of germolene ointment left anywhere. I need it for my (already bulging) first aid box!

MissingKittyCat · 18/05/2015 10:24

I'm so glad this thread exists. I, too, am mourning the loss of pink Germoline. Had to buy some to use when out, it's all white and modern, smooth like moisturiser. The pink ointment (that we luckily still have half a tube of) is sticky, greasy and magical. I thought we had bought the wrong one, sad to hear it's the new version!

I hope our half tube of pink lasts forever! Our future DCs childhoods will never be the same! They definitely don't smell the same, the White doesn't stay on the skin as a barrier and it doesn't stop the pain as effectively. Why did they do this! I wish companies would stop 'improving' things!
