to be getting increasingly annoyed with Game of Thrones (full book and TV spoilers)

Is it just me? I used to love it but now it's just pissing me off. So many changes to the plotlines in the books. I know they're going to change quite a lot but some of it is just pissing me off now because it's changing storylines that haven't even finished in the books, so you don't feel as though they are worth reading anymore.

Like this whole adventure with Jaime and Bronn in Dorne. In the books Jaime is only halfway through an adventure around Westeros putting down the last rebellions. But if the TV show isn't doing that, then what's the point in finishing that story in the book? Confused

Ditto the whole Sansa storyline. And I'm guessing also that the guy from Dorne isn't going to turn up in the show and get eaten by dragons, so that's whole chapters of the book that's wasted. And Penny the dwarf - she should have turned up by now, shouldn't she?

It's not that I just don't like the changes, it's more that they have been saying Martin has been agreeing to the new storylines, so it's as if he's admitting that huge parts of his book are completely irrelevant, iyswim?

Plus I hate the Arya, Dany and Brienne storylines at the moment, so I'm really not feeling the love, when I adored this at the start...

I see the book and show as completely separate. What happens in one doesn't have to happen in the other. I enjoy them both for their own qualities.

I see it as a good thing. The show is obviously going to finish long before the last book gets written. This way, the show won't spoil the book ending, because they won't necessarily be the same. And we can enjoy both!

I treat them as completely seperate too. In fact, half the time I'll watch the tv show and it will take me ages to realise they've left something out, because I'm enjoying it for what it is and not comparing it to the book any more.

Ive never read the books so can't really comment, but I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and can remember how annoyed I used to get when they changed things that happened in the books when making the films.

What's happened to Bran and Ricken, and Hodor? I presume the two boys will return in the future played by different actors?

See, I was happy with the thought that it would reach the end of the books and then start making up a new story. The running of two separate stories at the same time is pissing me off. Maybe it'll redeem itself in a few series time!

It's weird, True Blood did this and I was quite happy with the TV world being completely different from the books and just nicking the odd idea. GoT is doing it in a really frustrating way. I want to throw things at the telly.

Take the last episode. I was swearing hugely at the screen. Where's Gryff and Young Gryff?!

Emerald the Hodor/Bran/Rickon storyline has reaches the same stage as the books, they've no further storyline atm and won't be in this series. Bran will be same actor I reckon but Rickon may change.

I too treat them as totally separate things - I loved the books, it's just nice to see the story on tv even if it is changed

It's the mix and match of things I'm expecting and remember and new things. Makes it neither or thing or the other to me at the moment.

Is Bran not going to be in this series at all? He's got a little storyline left in the books I think.

We were debating whether they'll end this series with the same ending for Jon as in the books. That will be interesting, seeing where the TV show takes that.

No, yanbu and now that I have caught up with the show, I have stopped reading the books for this very reason - I just can't cope with the 2 separate story lines.

I was really pissing DH off from series 2 onwards by saying 'well it didn't happen like that in the book' every 5 minutes, and now it sounds as I they are becoming 2 separate entities, I just couldn't handle such huge steps away from the books!

I can't say I'm looking forward to the Sansa/Ramsay wedding next week. Their wedding night will just be an excuse for HBO to shoehorn more rape into the story.

Yeah, it was bad enough in the books when it was Jeyne. Not nice at all when it might be Sansa.

I have read all the books.

I am rather enjoying the changes.

If a book is written that is 100% suitable for making into a film or a TV show, it's probably quite a "shallow" book with little insight into people's inner workings.

In order to make a decent show, there are some changes (e.g. finding some way to get characters to tell you exposition, merging characters whose stories can be told together) need to be made.

The show has done much more than the minimum that NEEDED to be done, but if they are going to continue past the point where the books have gotten up to, I'm happy that the show's writers have a clear idea of where THEIR story is going.

I think it's best to forget you read the books tbh. Treat them as separate things.

I was late to GoT and watched season 1,2& 3 in a few weeks. I did attempt the books after that but got too wound up. There are some things they have missed that would make great TV.

I was going to compare True Blood as well; the TV series ended up being better than the final books IMO.

...you've read the books, right? Grin
It's not that unusual for someone to have a lengthy story and then be randomly slaughtered before achieving anything. So the TV series omits the dragon fodder - that's OK with me.

Full spoilers are OK with me, there's a warning in the title and it can't be that odd to be up to date with both TV and books, surely? Spit it out, woman!

The dragon fodder is fine by me, it annoyed me the first time around anyway even when I didn't know how it would end!

True Blood was definitely better. Though that wasn't hard after the last few books - did you finish the books? Jesus.

Maybe I just like the books more and that's why the show is annoying me.

I'm also very bad at remembering what happened in the ASOIAF books, probably because I tend to skip chapters to carry on the same PoV character, and then go back to read another PoV. Missed the red wedding doing that. Blush

And I keep forgetting that 'The Last Thing GRRM Wrote About At The Wall' actually happened. (still instinctively in non-spoiler mode)
I don't think he'll die. Somehow.

Personally I think that there is no magical connection between Targaryens and dragons.

I think they had KNOWLEDGE of how you train and subsequently ride a dragon, and that in a few hundred years of now dragons that knowlege is now written down in books but nobody KNOWS it any more.

Viserys was young (and Dany unborn) when they left Westeros. So they do not know this.

Ergo, the next dragonriders will be people interested in learning obscure old facts from books. Samwell Tarly, for example.

Yes I did finish the TB books. Very much on the '4 hours of my life I'll never get back' pile.

I like to pretend the TV series is the real version. Of the fictional story of vampires, werewolves and fairies. Hmm

Hasnt it been said that GRRM has told the producers where each Char will end up, so for eg the Sansa marrying Ramsey will be happening in the future books, so we are just getting there a bit quicker....?

GRRM does hate us all, remember, so I'd not be surprised if Jon Snow were to die without him or us ever knowing who his parents are.

Oh, I did that too with the first book - I skipped to Jon's chapter and learned that Ned had died Blush

I would put a lot of money on him not dying. There's a couple of characters I can't see him killing, even if he's drastic with other characters.

That's interesting Trills, he already found out about the obsidian knives/white walkers didn't he, though he didn't realise what he'd discovered.
