Because of TTIP, I have already made up my mind.

They have more rights on the continent and Gove is hellbent on taking away those we have left. I trust the EU more than those desperate to sell us out to US corporations. American women are practically thrown out of the maternity unit back into work and have about 2 weeks annual leave. Nope not for me.

YouTheCat · 16/05/2015 10:47

Without the EU, our trade/manufacturing industries would be fucked. Our farmers would be fucked. It would be our country's economic suicide.

You think things are bad now? It'd be a whole lot worse without the EU.

lljkk · 16/05/2015 11:29

I tried to find any neat summary to say "This is why TTIP is fantastic!" and couldn't. Why not?? Confused

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/05/2015 11:42

Yabu

So you did A-Level politics, and? How in depth a study of EU Law do you really think that involved?

Andrewofgg · 16/05/2015 12:23

LowlLowl The Human Rights Convention and the Human Rights Act are nothing to do with the EU.

TTIP is good news if if protects free trade from protectionism.

bunchoffives · 16/05/2015 12:31

Youthecat I see that your fear what would happen if we left the EU? What sort of problems do you think it would create?

I know that EU law takes precedence over UK common law - but hasn't there always been the option for the UK to pass statute law and give that priority? eg giving prisoners the right to vote.

And with regard to human rights - are we in a stronger position if a Bill of Rights is put into UK law - depending on what's in the Bill of course?

Capricorn76 · 16/05/2015 12:33

TTIP will not protect us it will expose us to frivolous lawsuits everytime some corporation decides our government has done something not in their favour. For example if the government decided to restrict smoking further for health reasons then American Tabacco could sue us for restructuring their business interests.

Whilst the Americans will use the worlds best lawyers to suck our public purse dry, you can bet they'll find every which way of protecting their own market from foreign goods. They subsidise everything from dairy to cars to prevent foreign organisations getting a foothold, that's why their cars are so shit because they have no competition. TTIP will only help America.

YouTheCat · 16/05/2015 13:11

The EU is so much more than just the human rights aspect. There are trade agreements in there and subsidies for agriculture. Without those, and with massive import/export taxes on our goods, it would damage our international trade.

And you wouldn't be able to buy nice cheap brie any more for a start. We would just be this little island that has no say internationally any more. The US has been taking the piss for decades. It'd be much worse if we were out of the EU.

I don't want to see this 'British Rights' idiocy either. Who in their right mind would want to give the government free reign to interfere in their day to day lives - because that is what they want to do.

chickenfuckingpox · 16/05/2015 16:03

i think im going to vote to leave its not like they would actually do it anyway

i just want them to renegotiate our terms and conditions and i think a large portion of people voting to leave would hopefully be enough to kick-start that process

maybe

museumum · 16/05/2015 16:05

I think yabu if you expect a non EU UK to not sign TTIP type agreements. As far as I can see the French for example have insisted in FAR more protections than the UK govt and other European countries seem far less enthusiastic about it than the UK.

VivienScott · 16/05/2015 16:15

The problem with the TTIP is the clause too allow overseas companies to sue governments if their legislation menas a loss of profits. This essentially means we will have to work to the lowest ccommon denominator for employee and consumer rights, which is the US. The US might proclaim them selves the leaders of the free world but their eployment rights are woeful, look at their maternity rights. Their industrial negligence cases are frightening. I don't understand it all to be honest. I can't understand why the EU who have done so much to push through health and safety are now taking such a massive backwards step. I feel like I must be missing something but can't find anything to say that I am!

caroldecker · 16/05/2015 16:53

The UK has the clause about corporations suing in many international agreements. These have been variously negotiated since the mid fifties. The sky has not fallen in.

RagstheInvincible · 16/05/2015 17:06

YABU and TTIP does not give private companies the "right to sue governments". That is scaremongering put about by those with a vested interest in killing of the TTIP agreement.

What TTIP does do is set up a basis of arbitration where the two parties can resolve their differences. If you go here:

www.ag.gov.au/tobaccoplainpackaging

you will see how it works in practice under the similar agreement Australia signed up to. Each side appointed an arbitrator (in each case a legal academic). Anti TTIP people usually come out with phrases like "hot shot corporate lawyers" to describe these adjudicators. There is also an independent chair appointed by the Permanent Court of Arbitrations (which I believe is a UN body) who has the casting vote.

This is adjudication not a private company suing a democratically elected government.

Patapouf · 16/05/2015 17:53

chicken that wouldn't trigger renegotiation at all, you'd be giving them a mandate to leave the EU. Hameron has already said he wants to negotiate before any referendum as he doesn't actually want to leave as even he knows it's not in Britain's best interests.

TalkinPeace · 16/05/2015 18:07

Leaving the EU will do nothing to stop TTIP
and it would be utterly catastrophic for the English Economy (assumes Scotland will have the nouse to stay in)
