To ask band 5 nurses (at lower end of pay scale) how much you earn?

I've just done a calculation as I'm due to qualify in September and I'm shocked at how little the pay is!! I've just worked out that a band 5 entry level nurse takes home around £1400 a month?? Surely this isn't right?

The minimum starting salary for a registered nurse is £21,478. To calculate your hourly rate divide your annual basic salary by 52.14 and then by 37.5.

All figures are effective from 1 April 2014.

Bottom of band 5 is just shy of £21,500 not including shift allowances or London weighting (however long they may last).

londonrach · 14/05/2015 14:23

Not nurse just on same pay structure. Think my link works better than my cut and paste...

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:25

Just shy of £1.5k per month

breakdown here

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:28

Didn't you think to check the salary before training? Nursing is not generally handsomely paid, not in the early days anyway. Pretty famous for it Confused

maroonedwithfour · 14/05/2015 14:28

I'm surprised you are nearly qualified before researching this.Confused

CatSwag · 14/05/2015 14:30

how much did you think you would be getting paid op

it does seem measlerly when you will be working evenings and weekends and cleaning up poo and sick etc should be at least double that really

CrystalCove · 14/05/2015 14:31

If you get a job in a hospital and work weekends you will get shift allowances.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:31

It doesn't reflect the professional training either, catswag.

legolegolego · 14/05/2015 14:32

I'm finding it hard to believe you haven't worked this out already too. It's one of the main things holding me back from starting the training...

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:33

yep crystal but for how much longer ? Angry & Sad

AyeAmarok · 14/05/2015 14:33

I assume you're just finishing a Masters if it's a September qualify date?

If so, you'll be able to work up the pay scale fairly quickly.

What were you expecting? Maybe people you spoke to had included extra bank shifts etc they were doing?

ifyoujustsmile · 14/05/2015 14:33

Yes starting pay is rather rubbish for the workload, you always have the option of picking up extra shifts/agency work if you need extra though, and they pay very well.

Bumchin101 · 14/05/2015 14:34

I'm a junior band 5 and take home after tax £1200 that's 30 hours a week without unsociable hours, with I take home £1400 after tax. Its not alot, that's why alot of nurses do bank work.

Happyringo · 14/05/2015 14:38

Don't forget you get 30% an hour more for evenings/Saturday and 60% more for Sunday/BH...but yeah it's shit

Spotifymuse · 14/05/2015 14:41

Bottom band 5 is £21,692 for 37.5 hours.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 14/05/2015 14:45

I'm also stunned you've only just looked this up. I'm doing my university access course for nursing and I looked this up ages ago!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:46

Do we think they'll reassess banding when they bin enhancements?

luxuriousblossom · 14/05/2015 14:47

I'm a newly qualified nurse and yes, considering the level of training now required it is very poorly paid. However, I love my job and wouldn't do anything else Smile

PeppaPlug · 14/05/2015 14:49

I don't think it's a poor starting salary.

debricassartcleary · 14/05/2015 14:53

I think the whole banding structure will have to change soon as many doctors locum now ft as payscale is so dire.

CrystalCove · 14/05/2015 14:54

SqueezyCheeseWeasel

Are they thinking of getting rid of shift allowances? Shock. Not heard this but Im a Band 6 working Monday-Friday 9-5 in NHS Scotland.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/05/2015 14:58

They've been threatening it for years in England. Looming larger and larger recently. I don't hold out much hope in light of recent political events.
