To ask band 5 nurses (at lower end of pay scale) how much you earn?

I've just done a calculation as I'm due to qualify in September and I'm shocked at how little the pay is!! I've just worked out that a band 5 entry level nurse takes home around £1400 a month?? Surely this isn't right?

It just really annoys me Uncertain. My colleagues were crying when the tories got back in, they were distraught when they found out about the unsociable hour cuts. I can't stand to see it, and then they get to listen to uniformed, naive and quite frankly stupid comments about how they should either suck it up or get a new job, being compared to postmen and analogies about paleo diets Hmm when most of them have broken their backs, devoted their lives and put their heart and soul into their job. People with 40 years experience in the NHS no longer being able to afford to sodding keep their jobs anymore because of what is happening. Cant afford to pay their mortgages because fees are increasing, wages are being effectively cut, more and more and more being expected of them but getting nothing in return.

But it's okay nurses, just deal with it. You're not that important. People won't die without you.

Lotus are you are a troll? I struggle to understand why you post what you do tbh unless to provoke some kind of reaction?

UncertainSmile · 18/05/2015 20:47

Yep, agree with every word. I wish MN had an 'Ignore Poster' button like on Digital Spy, I wouldn't have to put up with the rubbish from Lady Bountiful Lotus then.
I have known so many good, caring nurses throughout my career. All of the ones I know and work with now have had enough. They all want out; they've been worked into the ground.

girliefriend · 18/05/2015 20:55

I'm wondering if Lotus used to go by a different name....her snobby, goady posts seem somewhat familiar Hmm

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 18/05/2015 20:59

I never knew Katie Hopkins had a postman son....

KateShmate · 18/05/2015 21:42

Lotus if you actually had any idea what you were talking about, you'd know that you actually need a degree (yep, an actual degree.. Working ridiculously hard for 3 years at a university - just like your daughters) to be a nurse. Most student nurses have worked bloody hard to get the A-levels they need to get into university.
How dare you imply that student nurses don't need to/choose not to work as hard as other graduates.

londonrach - The new rates for 2015 - 16 are here. These also include lins to salary examples (take home after tax). Hope this helps.

Interesting this, even using 2017 figures, a newly qualified farm animal vet (equiv Band 5) earns about 5 to 10 k more, but usually does longer hours per week, often split shifts and already has massive University debt to pay off.

sadly it doesn't get much better! I'm a band 7 ward sister and after tax, pension and the £250 taken out pre tax for childcare I get around £1900 pcm. This government need to wake up to the pay freeze we have endured for many years and to the fact that our job is so much harder due to the NHS cuts. The NHS runs on the goodwill of its staff for very little money.

Nurseandmumof3 · 28/06/2017 08:34

I have to add - someone commented that once you get to band 7 you do less nursing and more managing. I still work my shifts as a hands on nurse. My management is fitted in with me working through breaks and staying late! I don't have the luxury of management time! Occasional snatched couple of hours but that's rare.
